Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Note: Due to the Golden Week holiday frame, the hardware sales are for a two-week period instead of the typical one-week. And the software sales for 05.04-10 will be released tomorrow according to Famitsu, so expect another update tomorrow.

Strong week that saw the Switch enjoy a big increase in sales due to restocking, and all the evergreen titles on the system also enjoyed big gains over last week. Ring Fit Adventure, in particular, saw a massive jump thanks to restocking.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons didn't increase over last week, but it held very well again and made 4 million (physical only) copies look easy. Nintendo announced a couple weeks ago that digital sales are very strong for the game, too, accounting for 50% of its worldwide sales. That percentage will be lower in Japan, probably more like 30%, but even with that figure, ACNH has very likely broke 5 million overall in Japan, maybe even 5.5 million, after just seven weeks. It's doing so well, that it'll actually be surprising if it DOESN'T become the best-selling game of all time in Japan now.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
So with select theaters opening this week with older hits, will box office numbers be released again? Or is the number to insignificant to watch? Is there any interest in seeing how these rereleases will do?

EDIT: Nevermind, missed a post above.

Yeah, as soon as rankings or even numbers/admissions begin to be reported again, I'll post them. I wouldn't expect any reporting until at least early June, assuming the remaining 8 prefectures open up on the scheduled May 31st date. Most of June's releases have been postponed, and while July has also begun to see delays, it still has a couple blockbusters still scheduled, so I'm guessing things will be as close to normal in regards to box-office reporting come July. Assuming no other global catastrophe occurs before then.

A bit of a slower week coming out of the Golden Week holiday period. Some titles remained flat or increased, but most titles saw slight drops.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains at #1 of course, and with 4.35 million copies (physical only) sold, it's already the 15th best-selling game of all-time in Japan now. It'll likely climb one or two more spots up that list for the next few weeks before entering the Top 10 (and over 5 million), so we'll see if still has the momentum at that point to be in contention as the market's best-selling game of all-time (seems likely).

Final Fantasy VII Remake is still dropping pretty hard, but is still going to reach 1 million copies (physical) at least. Final Fantasy XV ended up selling around 1.05 million (maybe closer to 1.1 million) copies, and that is probably where Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to stall out at. When digital sales are included, overall sales are likely to end up around 1.3/1.4 million. These are great numbers on their own, but they're down a lot for the franchise itself.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is going to reach 3 million before the start of summer, and Splatoon 2 may reach 3.5 million by summer. Both titles are three-years old now but continue to rank in the top 10 or just outside it, and they'll likely continue to be popular must-buy titles for the Switch for the duration of its life-cycle (which could be quite awhile).

Super Mario Odyssey returns to the Top 30, so we have an updated cumulative total for it now. It's curious that Nintendo never released proper DLC for the game, but perhaps any potential DLC kingdoms or content was better suited for Odyssey 2 or the next mainline series game.

And similar to Odyssey, Super Mario Party is also a big seller (the best selling game in the long-running Mario Party series even!) that's been displaying better longevity, yet Nintendo never released any DLC for it. Unlike Odyssey though, which didn't necessarily need any DLC since it had a good amount of gameplay/content, Super Mario Party could have really benefited from DLC boards or mini-games. Maybe Nintendo has a Super Mario Party 2 on the way instead that'll include a lot more content.

And a reminder that the Hardware Sales below are for the two-week period, so they're the same figures included in the Video Game Sales Chart (04.27-5.03) a few posts up.

Hardware (04.27-5.10):
Rank - Weekly Sales (Cumulative Sales) - Console
01. 117,487 (11,351,664) - Switch
02. x39,976 (2,204,513) - Switch Lite
03. x16,798 (1,535,190) - PlayStation 4 Pro
04. x15,680 (7,586,438) - PlayStation 4
05. x3,166 (1,713,207) - New 2DS XL
06. 256 (5,887,454) - New 3DS XL
07. 203 (x20,019) - Xbox One X
08. 47 (x93,259) - Xbox One S

The calm before the storm coming next week. Demon Slayer Vol. 20 was released on May 13th, along with a special edition..., and received a 2.8 million first-print run, a record for any manga other than One Piece. Volume 19 sold out of 92% of its first-print run of 1.5 million in just 3-days back in February, and Volume 18 sold out of 95% of its first-print run of 1.0 million in 3 days last December. Volume 20 is receiving a significantly higher first-print run, so I wouldn't anticipate it to sell out of 90%+ of its first-print, but we could be looking at a 2 million+ first week. Needless to say, no manga volume other than One Piece has ever sold over 2 million copies in its first week. In fact, Demon Slayer Vol. 19 holds the record for biggest non-One Piece first week.

Best Selling Manga by Series (Top 10): 2020 [11.19-05.10]

01. 42,446,339 (New All-Time Yearly Record) - Demon Slayer (Shueisha/Koyoharu Gotouge)

10. 1,520,000 (est.) - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

The Demon Slayer series sold 6.5 million copies in just the month of April.

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

And finally, Half-Year Sales Data is released every June, so updated sales figures will be released then. In addition, Yearly Sales Data is released the last week of November, so everything will get updated again. then. Each volume and series will naturally go up from the last tracked figures.

Some small theaters located in the lesser affected prefectures opened this past weekend, and along with some films that were showing before the shutdown, they've been playing older films. And the Top 10 films in ranked by admissions (no admissions released, mind you) was actually released!

Weekend Admission Rankings (05/16-17):
01. The Real Exorcist (Nikkatsu) [NEW]
02. Weathering With You (Toho) [July 2019 release]
03. Parasite (Bitter's End) [Week 19]
04. Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) [Week 9]
05. Your Name. (Toho) [August 2016 release]
06. Shin Godzilla (Toho) [July 2016 release]
07. Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) [Week 9]
08. Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You (Toho) [Week 9]

So, question... should the week(s) that older films rack up be included in their previous cumulative counts?

To be honest, I do not understand your question (English is only my third out of four languages)...

For example, Your Name. achieved 29 weeks in the Top 10 back in 2016 and 2017. Should its appearance in this weekend's rankings, and any future weekends, be added to that prior total given the situation?

I see...

Well, if the numbers are trustworthy, they should be added - you can always put an "*" behind the total...

They're certainly official rankings. https://eiga.com/ranking/

I agree about counting and including them, it just feels...cheap if any record gets broken (or even just a high accomplishment occurs) as a result. I'll leave asterisks (*) and notes when/if that happens.

Yep I agree as well, it should still be counted with an asterisk beside it.

Okay, so...

I believe the best and most accurate/fairest way of doing this is indeed to include however many more weeks in the top 10 (and/or at #1) they add to their original release counts and to mark them with an asterisk (**) as mentioned. However, I'm also going to include a film's original count in parenthesis alongside their updated total. You'll see two examples in the chart below. (I'm updating and posting a chart again!)

Two more weeks and Your Name will overtake Spirited Away. I think Titanic's record is still safe.

I do expect it to probably stay in the top 10 for a few more weeks. Late-June/early-July seems like the earliest things will return to "normal." I don't know what films may be receiving COVID-19 re-releases in the meantime to make up for the lack of new films to watch, but it's certainly a film that could be around for awhile during this.

It's too bad no numbers are being reported, but I imagine updated totals will eventually be released for most of them. Your Name. finished just ¥470 million behind Frozen (¥25.03 billion versus ¥25.50 billion), and while the numbers are definitely very small right now, that's not a particularly big gap to overcome if the re-release is prolonged.

Maybe they'll update the numbers by year end or sometime after it's run is over.

What a massive week for manga sales. A lot of series were delayed a few weeks due to COVID-19, so that's why there's so many new releases this week. And the biggest debut of them all...

Demon Slayer Vol. 20 sold a whopping 1,990,249 copies in its first week, selling 71.1% of its first-print run of 2.8 million copies in five days. This is a new record for the series, unsurprisingly, and it's the biggest first week ever for any manga series aside from One Piece, and the 8th biggest first week of all-time. It's also the biggest first week since One Piece Vol. 73 back in 2014.

The Demon Slayer series just concluded in last week's Shonen Jump, and is planned to have three more volumes released. Every volume, besides Vol. 19 (which is close now) and the just release Vol. 20 have now sold over 3 million copies each, making it the series with the most 3 million+ volumes aside from One Piece.
