Note: Yearly sales are recorded from December-November (the third week), similar to the box-office, not the standard January-December model.

And also note that you can't exactly compare the sales of the same manga year-to-year most of the time. Just because a series drops one year from the next doesn't necessarily mean it's losing popularity, especially if the decline is small. But if a downward trend continues for a few years, and at sharp declines, then that's a problem (i.e. The Seven Deadly Sins) for continued success.

Every series has some down years though, it's just natural, especially after seeing peaks during big story arcs or anime debuts.

And there are a couple factors that can cause sales to increase: 1. If an anime debuts or there's an ongoing anime that recently entered a big story arc, that can often increase the manga sales for awhile depending on the anime's reception. 2. And, if the manga series itself enters a big story arc, that too can often increase the sales for awhile.

So One Piece in 2020 hasn't yet reached 5m+ sales? Are the sales also being impacted by a new rival in terms of Demon Slayer? I understand that Wano arc currently running is well received for it. Any predictions where one piece will land in 2020?

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
It's at almost 3.8 million as of April 5th. The new volume was just released, so assuming it adds a further 700/800,000 over the next two months, and the backlog adds another 100,000 or so during that time, One Piece should be a little above 4.5 million at the half-year point in June. So around 9 million or maybe closer to 8.5 million for the whole year is the likely prediction right now.

This is, of course, assuming the virus doesn't impact the mangaka or publishers. To my knowledge, the manga industry is going unharmed so far this month, but Shueisha, the largest publisher, is delaying their first week of May releases due to the state of emergency going into early May. And one of those releases happens to be Demon Slayer Volume 20. Volume 19 sold almost 1.4 million copies of its initial 1.5 million print run in just three days back in February, and seeing as how the series isn't losing any steam and Shueisha almost certainly increasing the initial print count up to at least 2 million copies (probably even higher), retailers/convenience stores are going to be swamped when Volume 20 releases. Naturally, you can't have such a big release in the middle of stay-at-home orders.

I'm not going to lean too heavily into the various charts like with the manga sales (I don't have the data, and it'd require a ton of reseach), but I'll begin posting the Weekly Video Game Sales at the very least and maybe provide a list/chart or two in the future.

Seems like the Demon Slayer movie will be a wide release with TOHO working with Aniplex to distribute it. Definitely a wise decision since the series is so popular and Aniplex alone probably wouldn't be able to get as many screens judging by past releases. Wonder how high it could go, could still be delayed from its current date.

Aniplex releases typically don't get more than ~150 screens at most, so having Toho as the co-distributor is certainly a big advantage. It'll get over 300 locations for sure with Toho behind it.

The potential for a debut above ¥1 billion is easily there, and I'd be very surprised if it doesn't exceed that mark, and considerably so. Of course, a lot (everything) depends on the state of cinema come October.

Weekend Ranking (Admissions): 04/11-12

01 (01) Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) Week 4
02 (02) Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) Week 4
03 (03) Parasite (Bitter's End) Week 14
04 (06) Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) Week 6
05 (05) Howling Village (Toei) Week 10
06 (04) Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) Week 6
07 (07) Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You (Toho) Week 4
08 (09) Midsommar (Phantom Film) Week 8
09 (08) Psycho Pass 3 - First Inspector (Toho Video Division) Week 3
10 (12) Captive State (Kino Films) Week 2

Here's the past Weekend's Top 10 ranked by admissions. As per the usual, no weekend figures were released this week due to theaters being closed in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures (which were also apart of the state of emergency declaration last Tuesday), which account for 80% of the national box-office. And when you take into account that some other theaters across the country have also closed, the box-office is down over 90%.

And for the first time, no cumulative totals were reported this week either. Everything is earning peanuts at this point though, so their totals are barely moving at this point, so it's not a total surprise.

So here's the update schedule for this thread moving forward (unless Covid-19 has anything else to say):

Wednesdays: Weekend Box-Office (Admissions)
Fridays: Weekly Manga Sales
Saturdays: Weekly Video Game Sales

Of course, last Tuesday's state of emergency declaration in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures could greatly impact any or all of these in future updates, beyond just postponements/delays, but we'll find out as soon as this upcoming Friday/Saturday if so (the sales for the Final Fantasy VII remake will help determine any negative impact).

A bit of a disappointing first week for Attack on Titan Vol. 31. This is the series lowest first week sales since, I believe, Vol. 12, just prior to the series exploding back in 2013/2014. The series has been experiencing a decrease in sales over the past few years, but it's been relatively small compared to the drop-off Vol. 31 just had compared to the previous volume. And I don't really believe it's COVID-19 (state of emergency) related, certainly not on a large scale anyway since the other debuts are fine and the figures for all older releases are perfectly normal. Let's see if it achieves a strong second week, which can sometimes occur with manga sales.

Demon Slayer continues to completely dominate, with every volume still ranking in the Top 30 and roughly tripling their sales versus last week due to restocking. The series sold 2.34 million volumes combined this past week, bringing its 2020 yearly sales up to 37,146,543... It's now just 849,869 copies away from breaking the all-time yearly sales record set by One Piece back in 2011, and could claim that record as early as next week. It didn't even need the full year to break the record! Not even close to a full year, likely breaking it in a mere 21/22-weeks.

09. 1,662,856 - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isayama)
10. 1,292,772 - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

And finally, Half-Year Sales Data is released every June, so updated sales figures will be released then. In addition, Yearly Sales Data is released the last week of November, so everything will get updated again. then. Each volume and series will naturally go up from the last tracked figures.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
So, the state of emergency was expanded to include all prefectures last Thursday, and as a result, all theaters are now closed and the box-office rankings have been closed until things return to normal. The current declaration expires on May 6th, so we'll see if that date remains or if it gets extended. Confirmed cases have dropped over the past three days, so that's good news, but it's clearly too early to say how this could affect the date. Total cases reached 11,000 yesterday. Still an incredibly low number relative to the country's population and many, many other countries, but cases did see noticeable jumps this month.

Detective Conan Vol. 98 take the #1 spot, but its debut is a bit lower than recent volumes, and it would have settled for second if Vol. 14 of The Quintessential Quintuplets didn't receive a special edition release. And speaking of The Quintessential Quintuplets, its 14th volume combined sales topping 245,000 is pretty impressive and higher than the previous volume.

But in bigger news, Demon Slayer continued its dominating ways with all nineteen of its released volumes still in the Top 30, selling a total of 1,044,989 copies combined. Why is that number important? Because it brings the series 2020 yearly sales to a new record-breaking 38,191,494 copies, beating One Piece's 37,996,373 copies sold back in 2011. And even more impressively, Demon Slayer broke the yearly sales record in only its 21st week of the year. It still has 31-weeks remaining and is undoubtedly on course to exceed 50 million copies (I honestly think it could do 60 million) in just a one-year period.

The series will be approaching (maybe exceeding) 100 million copies after just four-years of serialization, and while I don't have the data available, I have to imagine it'll become the fastest selling series to reach 100 million copies.

10. 1,302,772 - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

Slow sales week, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons barely dropped compared to last week, and will become the #1 top selling Nintendo Switch game in Japan next week, and it only took five-weeks in release. 4 million is a very, very hard figure to reach, to my knowledge only around 10 or so games have ever hit that mark (physically), but New Horizons is going to reach that mark with relative ease. Can it reach 5 million?

I don't know the full is list of best-selling games of all-time in the market off the top of my head, but I'm quite certain that 5 million would get it near the all-time top 5. I'll do some research and post the Best Selling Video Games of All-Time in Japan sometime tomorrow. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokemon Sword/Shield and Splatoon 2 (approaching 3-years in release) which are all still charting on the sales chart are likely to make an appearance on a top 20/25 list, too.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons also made history worldwide, according to Nielsen Data, by selling over 5 million digital copies in the month of March alone (only 10 days in release), the highest number of digital sales for any video game in a single month, besting the multi-platform Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

Hi Corpose, Oricon has Detective Conan selling 236K copies instead of 206K during that period and also the rest of the rankings and numbers are different. Can you clarify which data is the correct one?

Thanks for your great efforts and updates in the forum.

That chart is for the top 10 weekly sales (from 04.13-19) for each series. The Detective Conan series sold 236,550 that week, while the latest volume sold 204,698 in its debut. The past volumes (or backlog) accounted for 31,852 of the series weekly sales.

Note: Sales figures vary a bit, so I cross-checked and selected the most commonly agreed (reported, anyway) upon figure. Still, I'd consider most to be "estimated" figures.

The Nintendo Switch has several games that have now sold over 3 million copies, all highlighted above, and each of them are still charting on the weekly sales chart. And they continue to chart very well, too, often ranking within the top 10/15 every week.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has only been out for a month, but it's already above 3.6 million and is going to cross 4 million in just a couple weeks. It's still a newer release, but at this pace, I don't see how it doesn't exceed 5 million. And perhaps it could go even higher. We'll have to wait and see.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokemon Sword/Shield are probably going to eventually reach 4 million+. And Splatoon 2 should eventually reach 3.5 million.

And before long, probably near the end of this summer, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will reach 3 million. It, too, despite being three-years old now, continues to regularly rank in the top 10 on the weekly sales chart.

That chart is for the top 10 weekly sales (from 04.13-19) for each series. The Detective Conan series sold 236,550 that week, while the latest volume sold 204,698 in its debut. The past volumes (or backlog) accounted for 31,852 of the series weekly sales.

Thanks Corpse. Looking at the manga sales, TV ratings and movie box office performance, what would you say are the top 3 IPs right now overall?
For example, One Piece does so well in manga sales but Conan beats it in anime TV weekly rankings and movie box office performance and as a total franchise box office gross. Same with Dragon Ball Super and Attack on Titan which have been strong in one medium much more than the other, while stuff like Sazae-san and Maruko have no strong manga sales and no box office performance/presence/success but are consistently stronger than Doraemon, Conan and One Piece in weekly TV ratings.
So looking at these 3 metrics of success overall (Box office, TV ratings and manga sales), which 3 IPs do you feel have achieved the most success overall?

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Tough question. I don't think there's a clear answer, but Demon Slayer is probably #1 at this current time, as it's absolutely dominating every form of media its name is on right now.

I just read that the anime's (season 1 concluding last September) opening song went triple-platinum in Japan recently, to become the best selling anime single of all-time (of. all. time.) And it's even beating One Piece in manga sales right now, and pretty easily. It might reach 100 million copies sold after just four-years of serialization, which would be the fastest on record. Once it expands to more forms of media (e.g. some video games are in development now, a console release and mobile release, and a movie is being release this fall), it'll be something to really watch. Whenever its third season (second season is planned to be the film adaptation this fall) is released, presumably in 2021, it could see monstrous TV ratings.

On a more broad, overall scale:

Clearly, One Piece is #1 in terms of manga sales, and I really don't believe anything will ever compare. (Yes, Demon Slayer is doing incredible, record-breaking sales right now, but is it going to sell 400, 500 million copies in the years to come? Probably not.) One Piece has sold around 474 million copies now, which is just about double anything other manga series. And to put that figure into perspective, it's only ~9 million away from surpassing Batman for the #2 spot on the all-time overall comic series sales chart.

In terms of TV ratings, both Sazae-san and Maruko-chan are the go-to anime for young children and families to watch together, so they're always (Detective Conan sometimes beats Maruko-chan) atop the TV ratings each week due to the family audience. I'd give Sazae-san the TV rating award for #1 series since it's almost always (like, 99% of the time) #1 every week and has been airing weekly since 1969 with around 3,000 episodes now. Other anime that rank well in TV ratings like Doraemon, Detective Conan, One Piece, etc. are more fan-driven, so their TV viewing audience is more limited.

And for box-office, it has to go to Detective Conan. Other than Pokemon, which it will likely surpass in the future, it's the biggest animated film franchise overall, its recent releases have grossed more than any Pokemon film or any other non-Ghibi/Disney/Shinkai animated film in the market.

I think you have to consider more than just those three categories though, and include every type of media the franchise has its name in (video games, CDs, home video releases, rentals, general merchandise, etc.). If you do that, then Pokemon is #1 because it's the biggest media franchise in the world, not just in Japan. Granted, it's #1 because there isn't a form of media it's not apart of. I wouldn't rank it in the top 3 in Japan at this time though, given its popularity has waned over the past decade, but it's still pretty high up there.

Thanks Corpse for the analysis.
If we don't include Pokemon in Japan's current top 3, I guess we can make an argument for a Demon Slayer/One Piece/Detective Conan top 3.
Since these are the only 3 IPs with strong presence in more than 1 medium, wheras stuff like Maruko and Titan etc not having except 1 main media strength...

Sales Source: Famitsu.

The list is overwhelmingly dominated by Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Monster Hunter, so when a game outside of those four franchises does sell over 1 million copes in their first week (or close to that mark), such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons doing a whopping 1.88 million last month (biggest debut ever outside of the aforementioned franchises by a considerable margin), it's a significant accomplishment. And when Yo-Kai Watch 2 and its follow-up (Psychic Specters) broke 1.2 million in its first week, one can better understand why the franchise was seen as perhaps the "new Pokemon" for awhile.

It's also worth noting that Dragon Quest XI, which interestingly enough I started playing on the Switch (definitive version release) just last week, is the only game that has ever sold over 1 million copies (2 million in its case) in its first week that began as a multi-platform (PS4, 3DS) debut upon its initial release. Every other game on the list was a platform exclusive.

Several of the titles listed have received re-releases/remakes or received releases on other platforms months/years after their initial release, but only Dragon Quest XI debuted as a multi-platform release.

Yes, another video gaming chart. I said I probably wouldn't get chart heavy with the video games as I have with the manga sales, but I couldn't resist. All versions of a console, such as Lite/Pro/SP/Slim/XL/new etc., have been consolidated into a single figure.

Note that the sales for the Nintendo 3DS/2DS, Switch/Lite, and PlayStaion 4/Pro are as of April 26, 2020, which will be included in the Weekly Sales Chart for 04.20-26 posted tomorrow.
