Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (02/2
Afternoon Sunday Update:

Admissions are much stronger than yesterday--understandably since it's the first of the month and Sunday is typically bigger than Saturday anyway--so that's a positive sign for things moving forward. However, given that it is the first of the month (national discount day), the admissions, while fine, are a little lower than expected nearing the mid-day point. So that's an indication that the virus is probably stunting the box-office by that 10-15% margin that I've estimated. If the impact remains in that estimated range for the next couple weeks, the overall impact of the virus will be quite minimal on the box-office, especially since Doraemon was moved (it would have likely been hit hard since its audience is almost exclusively very young children and families).

And here's an important observation: Morning and afternoon ticket sales in general seem to be lagging behind their regular levels for the past several days, which may also be linked to the virus' effect, since the more susceptible demographics (children and seniors) attend morning and afternoon showings. The less susceptible demographics (teens and adults) favor evening and night showings, and for the most part, those dayparts have been relatively normal.

It'll be interesting to track the weekdays for the next few weeks, too, with all public schools being closed. Weekdays strongly favor adult-driven films, but with an unknown number of adults (parents) having to stay home to watch their children (or perhaps babysit others'), those films could see a negative impact. But on the opposite side of things, I could see the more younger-skewing films thriving since their target audience is out of school. It's going to be a wait-and-see situation.

Not too much, honestly. By that I mean no more than the standard ¥4 billion result for an original Pixar film, but I wouldn't be surprised if it misses that mark. Oddly, it still doesn't have a release date. I would presume mid-July, but Soul is scheduled for "Summer 2020", so I don't know where Disney will put Onward unless they wait until November/December. Both could survive in Summer together (one in July, the other in August), but I don't find that likely.

EDIT: Turns out Onward WAS releasing in March, but it was announced with Mulan just today as being delayed. Mulan got a new release date (May 22nd), but Onward is TBD.

I'll have the Weekend Actuals up a little later tonight. Busy day.

As I'm doing the Weekend Actuals, I just read that Disney has moved Mulan from April 14th to May 22nd in Japan. April 14th was a very good date (Golden Week in its third week) and is far enough out into Spring in my opinion, so unsure of that move since May 22nd is a bad spot being eight weeks away from any major holiday frame.

Not a good weekend. The last weekend of February is generally weak though, so no surprise, but the numbers for the holdovers are certainly lower than expected, again, probably by 10-15% due to the Coronavirus.

>Parasite repeats atop the box-office in its eighth-weekend of release, and for a third consecutive weekend, selling a further 128,000 admission; its cumulative admissions have reached 2.72 million. A total around ¥4.5 billion ($41/42 million) seems likely now.

>Shirobako performed decently, selling 84,000 admissions over the weekend on just 158 screens. Not great, but decent enough.

>The Call of the Wild bombed. It's one of those films that doesn't really have a target audience, so no surprise it failed to succeed. And while its opening was deflated a bit due to the virus concerns, you'd have to double (or triple, honestly) its debut to be considered a success, and no way did it the virus affect it that much.

So the virus is noticeably beginning to impact the box-office now, and it'll probably be that way until late March or into April, especially since some of the event films (Doraemon, Mulan) have been delayed.

Do you think there will be any kind of restrictions in place during Golden Week if the coronavirus situation doesn't improve soon?

Since the posts have been scattered a bit, here is the list of the upcoming event films that have been delayed:

Doraemon: Original Date - March 6th --> New Date - TBD
Onward: Original Date - March 13th --> New Date - TBD
Mulan: Original Date - April 12th --> New Date - May 22nd

Doraemon and Onward, since they skew toward children and families, will probably be released in July or August.

We'll probably know more later this week. Abe is putting together legal preparations now ahead of any state of emergency measures that may need announced. Closing all public schools with just a few days notice didn't go over very well with some (even though it was a smart call), so any other major announcements will have a timetable and such moving forward.

And while no theaters have closed, some are putting up notices not allowing children to attend for the time being.

The Japanese have done a good job keeping the virus from spreading, with reported cases ranging between 10-15 on average since mid-February and "only" sixth deaths. A lot of European countries look to overtake Japan in number of cases and deaths soon, including France, Germany, and Spain. And I wouldn't be surprised to see the US begin to spike here soon.

Quick Box-Office & Coronavirus Update:

The box-office has remained relatively normal, and no theaters have closed. At this point, I wouldn't bet on any of them closing unless there's a sudden spike in cases. The weekday drops have been solid this week, but you can see which films are being affected and which aren't. Adult-driven films are performing at regular levels, only dropping 20-30% week-to-week, while younger skewing films targeting children and families are performing with at 40-50% off or more. Some theaters are restricting admission to children for a couple weeks, so there is that, too.

The spread of the virus is remaining low and is pretty contained, continuing to add 10-20 cases on average each day, for a total of 331 confirmed cases (and 6 deaths). The three largest regions in Japan (Tokyo, Chubu and Kansai), having 87 million people in incredibly dense areas, only have 174 total cases combined, barely half of the overall total.

A bit of a surprise for The Journalist to win Best Picture when Fly Me to the Saitama won Best Director, Screenplay, and Editing. But then again, the Academy has spread out the wins and it's more difficult for any single film to sweep in recent years.

Nice to see Makoto Shinkai win with Weathering With You.

And also nice surprise to see Joker beat Green Book (critical acclaim) and The Mule (Eastwood's influence), the two films I considered the favorites.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Event Films Delayed
Toho-Towa announced yesterday that they'd be delaying the release of Sonic the Hedgehog from March 27th to an undetermined date that'll be announced in the future.

Here is the list of notable event films that have been delayed so far this Spring:

Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur: Original Date - March 6th --> New Date - TBD
Onward: Original Date - March 13th --> New Date - TBD
Sonic the Hedgehog: Original Date - March 27th --> New Date - TBD
Mulan: Original Date - April 12th --> New Date - May 22nd

All are family oriented films, and a number of theaters, while not closing, are restricting admission for children until sometime in April, so it's understandable that these films are getting delayed. Not to mention the crowds that they'd bring with them to the theaters given all four are event films.

If things improve by Summer, the 2020 Summer Box-Office is going to be incredibly packed and enormous since these films are likely going to be moved between June and August.

Looking at all the delays, it seems fortuitous Frozen II did not have a March release in Japan. Nobody could have predicted the coronavirus, but I'm sure Disney is happy that all of their biggest films were released last year.

This is an approximate figure. In first place, "Fukushima 50", has admitted 106,000 people on Saturday and Sunday and achieved a revenue of 143 million yen. In 2nd place "Kamen Ward '' has admitted 77,000 people on Saturday and Sunday, with a revenue of 105 million yen

Estimated cumulative figures up to 3/8. “Parasite Semi-Underground Family” has admitted 2.92 million people and achieved a revenue of 4 billion yen, “Inunaki Village” achieved a revenue of 1.1 billion yen, and “Love is Hard for Otaku” has exceeded 1.2 billion yen.

Interesting observation. It would have been delayed for sure since Onward and Doraemon were. Presumably, it would have been moved to July/August (assuming things improve by then), where it would have done very well, probably a bit better than it finished. Remember, it doesn't really matter how late films are released in Japan since pirating/illegal downloads isn't a big problem in the market.

But yes, in hindsight, good thing they went with a day-and-date release for Frozen II in Japan afterall since the future is rather unknown at the moment.

Another dull weekend, but that's unsurprising given the Coronavirus' effect having a more noticeable impact, although the adult-driven films are still performing decently and not far from regular levels. Also, the first weekend of March is when Doraemon always opens to kick-start the box-office and begin the Spring box-office season, alas, it was delayed due to the virus since it's an event film, one that targets almost exclusively families and children.

>Fukushima 50 did alright, but given it skewing quite older, came in below its expectations prior to the Coronavirus. Films skewing too old (seniors) are also see the impact since seniors/elders are a vulnerable demographic. Still, it did okay as I said, selling 106,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 357 screens; it sold 146,000 over its first three-days in release. If I had to guess, its three-day opening probably would have equated to its opening weekend under normal circumstances.

>Mask Ward narrowly claimed the second place in its debut, selling 77,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 326 screens; it sold 112,728 admissions over its first three-days in release. Again, while not as impact by the Coronavirus as much as Fukushima 50 likely was, it, too, probably suffered a bit.

>Parasite was finally dethroned, but it's still holding well, and one can just imagine how much it's being limited now due to the Coronavirus hindering its incredible performance. It'll probably finish around ¥4.5 billion ($42/43 million), but if things improve come April, I could see it gaining traction and push toward the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) milestone where it was headed.

Nothing else to really analyse this weekend. Films that are attracting families, children, and elders are suffering the most from the Coronavirus due to being susceptible demographics (and some theaters are restricting admission to children, too), while films targeting adults (think 25-50-year-olds) are still performing pretty well, but are also feeling the impact a bit too.

Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur wasn't the only film to be delayed this month, so was Onward and Sonic the Hedgehog, and all three are postponed until further notice without a release date. So while March is often one of the more exciting months to follow the Japan box-office, it's not going to be very interesting this year. Here's hoping things improve come April, or at least before the Summer season.

And quickly, thanks to everyone getting this thread above 2 million views earlier today! Congratz!

I'm following your thread for many years now and I just looked at the years 2016, 17, 18 and 19 and I haven't found a weekend with the Top Ten grossing just 607m yen. So last weekend was the worst weekend in (at least) five years...

Maybe you have a better grip on your data and can find the last weekend as bad as weekend 10/20...

Thanks.

And I'll check. It should be pretty easy to check since I expect the only possible weekends would have come out of October, November, or possibly June. If it helps you, look up the weekend when The Little Prince (2015? 2016?) opened. I believe it was in November. I remember it being one of the lowest grossing #1 films and one of the weakest weekends on record.

EDIT: It was the second weekend of The Little Prince. The Top 10 only earned ¥464 million, the worst Top 10 since at least 2000.

About mid-way down the page:
