Hey Corpse,

Do you known a website where it tells all the upcoming movie releases in Japan? The reason why is that I been wondering when will New Mutants come out in Japan.

I'd use EIGA. It's probably the easiest to navigate.

The New Mutants doesn't have a release date yet.

>AI Amok debuted atop the box-office this weekend, selling 165,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 346 screens; it sold 213,617 admissions in its first three-days of release. Solid enough start, right around, perhaps even slightly above, expectations. Films that open on a weekend where the first of the month falls on Saturday or Sunday have a bit of frontloading, but this opening is high enough to get the film above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Cats enjoyed a good second weekend, selling a further 136,000 admissions, bringing its ten-day admissions up to 600,000. Most musicals develop good legs in the market, and while this drop isn't great, it's good enough where I believe the film will end up with a healthy total. Expect a finish around ¥1.5 billion ($14 million) or slightly more. A bit over $15 million is needed to surpass the U.K. for Japan to become the films' #1 overseas market.

>Parasite didn't see the weekend increase that I was expecting, but it did rise another position and an 11% decline is clearly nothing to be disappointed about. Its fourth weekend is 5% higher than its opening weekend. Its admissions after 24-days in release has reached 934,344. There's still little indication of the film slowing down yet, so I believe a total above ¥2 billion ($20 million) is looking good. And, of course, if it does well at the Academy Awards, it'll go much higher.

>Frozen II tumbled a bit in its eleventh-weekend of release, but it remains in the Top 5, a great accomplishment after eleven weeks. The film surpassed Jurassic Park on the all-time chart to become the 18th-highest grossing film ever, and after 73-days in release, it has sold 10.16 million admissions.

>Bad Boys for Life missed the Top 5, but expectations were low so I wouldn't necessarily say its opening weekend is disappointing. Its weekend admissions haven't been released, but its three-day admissions reached 94,734.

The controversy is being overblown for sure. Just seems to be a case of research gone wrong in deciding upon a character name that fit the character. The author said there was no intent behind the name and Shonen Jump has apologized for the name, and they'll be changing it moving forward (and the new name will be featured once the chapter(s) get released in volume form.

Of course, China has already decided to ban My Hero Academia, temporarily at least, but China really overreacts about such issues (a number of anime/manga is banned there). And I'm not saying the name shouldn't be an issue or taken seriously, especially since it's understandable that some could be offended given the historical context, but if the apology is genuine and the name is getting changed, no need to go overboard.

This isn't nearly as big of a deal in Japan. It doesn't appear to be having any impact on the film's box-office or anime ratings. The film has been holding pretty well week-to-week (-30% or so), and the anime ratings are still good.

Hey corpse, has the spread of corona virus affected the box office? It seems like all films are 50%-60% down on Saturday.

No, I don't think so, but it is something to keep a watch on in the coming weeks/months. The Japanese are very, very health conscious though, so I believe they'll keep the virus at bay much better than most other countries if it becomes a problem there. Many Japanese already wear face/sickness masks year-round (I think 40% of the population), and several billion are sold each year (there's an entire market featuring them, from various designs, smell-filters, scents, and more) so that's already a positive.

Everything is down 50/60% (in admissions) today versus last Saturday because last Saturday was greatly inflated due to being the 1st of the month (national discount day). In revenue, the declines are more like 30/40%.

And I've been pretty busy the past coupe of days, so no Weekend Forecast this weekend. I'll post the Weekend Estimates on Sunday though, and things will be back to normal on Monday.

Indeed. Parasite is going to see a huge week or two, and if WOM is as great among the larger crowds as it has been so far during its run, it may go on to reach some truly great heights.

It was already looking at $20/25 million before the Oscars, but it could easily do $30/40 million now.

Regarding the Weekend Estimates: There was a malfuction that resulted in most of Sunday's ticket sales nlt being recorded. So I didn't bother given how off any estimates would have been. Weekend Actual will be up this evening.

>Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku debuts atop the box-office, selling 169,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 304 screens; it sold 223,260 admissions over its first three-days in release. A pretty good start, especially for early February, that will earn distributor Toho another ¥1 billion ($10 million) earner early in the year. Expect a total around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Howling Village achieves a second place opening, selling 116,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 211 screens; it sold 152,829 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is another pretty good start, not just for the time of year, but also given the lower screen count. Distributor Toei also has a very rough track record with live-action films, so this is a nice little surprise for them. It'll probably still miss the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, but it does have a chance of reaching the mark.

>Parasite holds strong in third place in its fifth-weekend of release, off just 15% despite coming off an inflated prior weekend (just look at the drops for the other holdovers). So... it won Best Picture at the Oscars. That win is going to go a long way in a market like Japan, and the film was already holding extraordinarily well. We're going to see some major increases this week, and undoubtedly an increase next weekend. It'll probably continue to play very, very well even after next week, too. I'm expecting it to finish around ¥3 billion ($30 million), twice as much as its five-week total, but won't be surprised if I adjust that number higher next week.

>Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger VS Lupinranger VS Patranger rounded out the Top 5 in its debut, but its weekend admissions haven't been released. These films typically have very low average ticket prices since they skew young, so it probably sold between 80,000-90,000 admissions over the weekend.

>I'm basically going to lump the bottom half of the Top 10 together in this analysis, and just say that they all experienced the usual sharp declines that come off an inflated prior weekend (last Saturday was the first of the month, national discount day).

Also, today (Tuesday) is a national holiday in Japan, the day after Parasite wins Best Picture. This couldn't have been planned any better! I will not be shocked if today alone is bigger than any of its past five weekend grosses.

Hi Corpse, I have 2 questions :

How much could add Frozen 2 in Japan ? Something like $2M-$3M and $122M-$123M final run ?

And how much admissions made Avengers : Endgame in Japan in his first week end (Friday + Saturday + Sunday) and by the end of his run ?

Yeah, Frozen II looks to add $2/3 million more to its total to finish around $122/123 million.

Avengers: Endgame sold 956,000 admissions over its first three-days in release (Fri.-Sun.), of which 628,000 was over the weekend frame itself (Sat.-Sun.), and finished its run with 4.15 million.

Parasite is going to be mentioned a lot this week, and probably in the weeks to follow, so thought I'd mention that it earned ¥130/140 million ($1.2/1.3 million) on Tuesday. It's playing at 192 theaters, and sold through ~65% of its available admissions.

That single-day figure, its 33rd day in release, is on par with most of its past five weekends (up 5/10% over its past weekend), including its opening weekend.

I actually looking forward to 1917 performance. It is my best 2019 live-action film.

Just lol, new Promare 4dx screenings to celebrate the disc release

I only go to 4DX once (for Martian), I don't know if it will have confetti effect to celebrate 'that scene'.

Looks like it'll do decently this weekend. Don't want to make any predictions yet, as I expect it'll skew pretty old, meaning its good morning/afternoon ticket sales could be deceiving since older skewing films perform very poorly in the evening/night. Too bad it didn't win any of the main Oscars though, because it would have been set-up perfectly to take advantage of those wins by opening this weekend.

Parasite is receiving its first expansion this weekend, its sixth-weekend in release, and it's a pretty significant one--277 locations, up from 192 locations. It has been posting huge dailies all week leading up to the weekend. (I'm estimating it's earned around $3.5 million since Monday, and is up to $18 million or so). It's going to capture the #1 spot this weekend with ease, and will experience a huge weekend increase. I won't be surprised it it does $35/40 million in Japan.

And most of you probably know that 277 is a good theater count in the market, but for those that are curious: 300-325 theaters is usually the count range for a standard wide release, while 370-380 theaters is the most any film receives and is typically reserved for blockbuster releases. So 277 is quite good for a film like Parasite, especially considering it's being distributed by a small independent studio (Bitter's End) in the market.

Weekend Forecast will be up tomorrow.

>Parasite will finally capture the #1 spot in its sixth-weekend in release, after weeks of being blocked by new openers, and it will do so with a monstrous weekend increase. I'm simply tossing out a 200% increase, but given how high of a percentage we're taking here, it will certainly vary. Its Friday was up over 300% compared to last week, and its Saturday pre-sales are up 250% versus last Saturday. So the weekend increase should come in below both of those percentages, but it's going to be huge--150%, at a minimum, should be guaranteed.

>1917 is looking to debut in a solid second place, but one obviously has to wonder just how well it would have opened--and later performed--had it won the big Oscars over Parasite just last Sunday. And do note since the film will very likely appeal heavily toward adult/senior audiences, the weekdays are where it'll play best.

And finally, I expanded the Top 10 to a Top 12 for this Weekend Forecast since the tenth-place position is pretty open this weekend. Kaiji: Final Game should take it, but it seems like it'll have a heavy drop this weekend, so the Man With a Mission documentary, despite being a limited release, could bump it off (its pre-sales are pretty good, too).

Only subtitles. Dubbing, at least based on my observations, is becoming less common in recent years. Big blockbusters, especially those from Disney, Warner Bros., and Sony, still receive a dub cast. But fewer middle-tier films are, and smaller films, especially those released by independent distributors, are almost never dubbed anymore.

Subtitled showings perform better than dubbed showings anyway, so it doesn't harm a films' box-office prospects.
