Post The Flava'd Fifty Part 6: Kinda Being Singles in 2019 (#1!)
Yep it's back! KJ's favorite (and only) annual music countdown. This year is a little bit different from the past two. Rather than including any song that was released in 2019, I'm only using the singles that defined the year for me. This is for a few reasons

1) Metric had 3 top ten songs last year and while they probably deserved even more, it doesn't make for a very entertaining list when it is just the same artists over and over. While this issue wasn't entirely resolved by the new format, there are still several artists with multiple songs, it helped enough because nobody has more than two and the top ten is entirely unique.

2) There will (hopefully) be more material that people actually know. Sure you guys could use the youtube videos to check out all my niche rock acts, but I know it's not so easy. I'm still going through some of your all time top 100 lists. Again though, didn't completely change, still plenty of people that nobody will have heard of.

3) Music videos are much more fun to watch than a mostly blank page that only shows the lyrics.

We will begin on Monday and conclude before the following Monday.

Thanks zwacks! I will begin soon. But, as always, we must start with A History of #1s. I've done the list the last two years here on KJ, but used other sites like ATRL before that. Believe it or not, internet forums used to be poppin and you could go to more than one!

So

2018: Now or Never Now - Metric
2017: Need To Feel Your Love - Sheer Mag
2016: Forget Me Now - Against the Current
2015: Dead Inside - Muse
2014: Oh My Darling Don't Cry - Run the Jewels
2013: Unbelievers - Vampire Weekend
2012: Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men
2011: Get Away - Yuck
2010: Dance Yourself Clean - LCD Soundsystem
2009: Panic Switch - Silversun Pickups
2008: All Nightmare Long - Metallica
2007: Through the Fire and Flames - Dragonforce
2006: When You Were Young - The Killers
2005: Helena - My Chemical Romance
2004: Ch-Check It Out - Beastie Boys
2003: Faint - Linkin Park

I don't necessarily agree with all of those here in 2019, but is a solid list that I'd be willing to go to war with. What will close out the decade on top?

50.
49.
We begin with two songs that I have only heard very recently. One because it’s in a genre I don’t much attention too and it only came on my radar through several grammy nominations, just like HER did last year lol. The other one actually just came out though, you can tell because the video is a car commercial. Hard to place these songs blindly alongside songs that have been lighting up the entire year for me, but they’re too good to just leave off entirely. One being very emotional and the other just being a great freakin jam.

48. Yola actually popped up on my radar before she was nominated for best new artist at the grammys. Kacey Musgraves, who you may remember that I really like, hand picked her as the opener for the Oh What A World Tour. Sometimes I don’t even get there on time for the first act, I mean often is it going to someone that you will actually care about? But Yola won us over with her southern-soul style and Huge voice. We all added her onto our respective streaming services afterwards and now here she is, on the Flava’d Fifty. Though I should have known about it even earlier since Dan the man Auerbach is the lead producer.

47. For my album review of Babymetal I said something along the lines of “this is a band who could use any one of their songs as the opening for an anime show, so you are either in or out right now.” I must have recently watched Ocean’s 11, but the statement remains true. Many will find PA PA YA to completely obnoxious and barely listenable, whole many of us are drawn in by it and can totally get down with some animetal. I have no idea what they are talking about in this song but does it really even matter?

46. XCX makes her third consecutive appearance on the Flava’d Fifty, after peaking at #3 last year with No Angel. She was also #7 with 5 In the Morning. So Charli is almost just as responsible for Metric for the change in format. Those were both just individual singles though, Charli doesn’t play the album game too often (and repeatedly talked shit about how 2014’s Sucker was made.) Rather than try to make pop hits again, she actually went the other way and somehow made her (pop) music even less friendly to the mainstream lol. Case in point, the video for this song features both Charli and Christine (not sure where the rest of the queens are, if they even exist) tied up, unable to be free because of the way society expects them to behave. By the end, they free each other, but then go back into bondage by choice for sex reasons.

:P Well I did say there would still be a lot of unknowns. Just maybe less than usual? We'll have to do an official count at the end.

Anyways episode 2 is coming up soooon.

45. I don’t want to put the full blame on Bad Blood, or say that Witness was a terrible album, but it had been awhile since Katy Perry made an infectious jam like this. Zedd is a good fella to go when you need one of those. Literally squashing your beef with Taylor Swift (in the Calm Down video) is another good way. Her other singles Small Talk and Harleys in Hawaii are fine too so hopefully the new album delivers when it is released next year.

44. Frank Carter gives us a lesson on the big bang theory to try and explain why we all feel so insignificant in this world. I’d wonder if he was a flat-earther, but I think this is just a rallying cry to fight against the norms if it doesn’t make you feel comfortable. A standard in rock n roll put in a very catchy package. I wish I could have seen them perform this live, but they cancelled on both festivals I went to!

43. Speechless was my favorite song in the Aladdin remake and it kind of made the whole movie for me. Disney has certainly done a lot to empower their heroins in the last decade, but it’s not like Jasmine was some weak character, she had a strong mind even though her life was completely out of her hands. This song basically operates as a “fuck you, take me seriously” to Jafar, her father, the royal guards, Abu, the parrot and most importantly the audience. She weaponized a pop song even better than Justin Timberlake at the end of Trolls.

42. It’s great to have Rammstein back in proper form. And while you might expect a german metal band to have a low opinion of the radio, I certainly did when I went into the song, it’s not necessarily. Obviously I don’t speak the language, but from what I gather from the translation this is more about radio as a whole rather than just music radio. Think of how the order of the phoenix was able to spread information using Potterwatch. Or any number of real life situations where an oppressed people needed to spread information without their overlords knowing about it.

41. Tegan and Sara started as more of an indie-rock type band, then closer to the start of this decade went in a different direction - the 80s synthy pop-rock one. I’ve always given credit to Drive for this occurrence, but the truth is that most of the industry went that way too as 80s nostalgia became the hottest thing in pop culture other than Marvel. But after doing that for so long, this little nugget, full of electric guitar, became a gem. Though not to worry, if you preferred the other way there is still a healthy balance of both on their new album.
