It took eleven years, but a new October Opening Weekend Record has been achieved (by revenue). And it actually came from a DC film. No other DC film would even crack this list! Not saying this list is "impressive" (October is the weakest month of the year at the box-office in Japan), just noting how high Joker opened compared to past DC releases.

It's going to affect the whole box-office, and in an extreme way. There's no reason to even post a Weekend Forecast this week.

(Super) Typhoon Hagibis is huge (unfortunately, its impact could be the biggest in 50 years...) and is going straight across central Japan (where 80%+ of ticket sales come from). Up to 40 inches of rain is expected over the next 24 hours. Thankfully, the country's preparation is on point, and a lot of the area will effectively be on lockdown Saturday. Railways, supermarkets, hotels, theme parks, and even theaters are shutting down/going on lockdown. You know it's serious when most of Tokyo will be closed after 1PM today. It's the first time since the terrible 2011 Tohoku Earthquake that so many facilities will be closed.

As a result, Saturday-to-Saturday pre-sales are down over 90% (95% in most cases) for nearly every film. Sunday will recover a bit, as long as the storm's aftermath isn't catastrophic, but I believe everything will be down ~70/80% across the board this weekend.

Scary! Hopefully casualties are at a minimum.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: (Super)Typhoon Hagibis Hours Away
So far, as of a few hours ago: 35 casualties, 17 missing, 166 injured.

Considering the storm's strength, especially how much rainfall it brought, the number is on the "low end", thankfully. It's still too early to determine just how much damage it has caused, but this seems to be another example of just how well-prepared Japan has become when dealing with disasters. And, of course, Japan was quick to get their renowned rail services up and running again early by Sunday afternoon.

There are some devastated areas due to flooding by record rainfall, and said flooding could get worse still as rivers rise, but let's hope for the best. This will be a growing concern, especially in southern Japan (most susceptible to flooding), if these storms continue to grow in strength (and number) in the coming years.

As for the impact it had on the box-office... everything was down 65-70% on average over the weekend. Saturday saw everything decline 80-90% as expected due to the storm approaching and making landfall, while Sunday saw declines of 50-60%.

Look like the death toll is double of that number now.

NOTE: Japan suffered through a major typhoon over the weekend, which greatly impacted the weekend box-office.

NOTE 2: Monday was a national holiday, so the cumulative totals above are as of Monday, 10/14.

>Joker easily repeats atop the box-office, and it has already outgrossed every modern DC film after two weeks (plus Monday) in release, and is the third highest-grossing DC film ever, behind just Batman and Superman II. And it's a lock to outgross both of them now, snapping the incredibly long 30-year streak of the 1989 Batman. It might be a little early to predict this, but a ¥4 billion ($35-40 million) total is looking quite likely.

>Way to Find the Best Life and Her Blue Sky couldn't have opened under worse conditions really, so it's not fair to analyze their debuts, really. Neither appear particularly strong, not a surprise given the time of year, but let's wait and see how they perform over the next week or two before writing them off as disappointments.

>Weathering With You has reached 10.22 million admissions after thirteen weeks in release, and is now less than ¥100 million away from surpassing The Last Samurai to become the 12th highest-grossing film of all-time.

And finally, given how much of an impact the typhoon had on the box-office, look for next weekend to see strong holds. I'd even expect some potential increases, but a lot of the lost weekend business was made up on Monday due to the holiday, so that should counter any crazy holds (single-digit) or possible increases.

List of eligible Academy Awards for best animated feature is out and Disney doesn't send Lion King into the competition, while it doesn't rule out that Lion King is animated film, I respect Disney's self-identified right

Also Promare!

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Angelina Jolie Box Office History
Angelina Jolie has been the biggest female Hollywood box-office draw in Japan for almost 20 years now, so like with other big names with huge draw power (namely Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp), here is her history at the box-office in the market ahead of the release of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil:

Angelina Jolie Box-Office History (2000-):

¥1.83 billion ($17.1 million) - Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) [N/A Overseas Market]
¥2.70 billion ($22.1 million) - Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2001) [#1 Overseas Market]
¥2.00 billion ($16.4 million) - Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) [#1 Overseas Market]
¥260 million ($2.4 million) - Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) [#3 Overseas Market]
¥1.23 billion ($12.0 million) - Alexander (2005) [#2 Overseas Market]
¥4.65 billion ($39.1 million) - Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) [#1 Overseas Market]
¥420 million ($3.7 million) - The Good Shepherd (2007) [#5 Overseas Market]
¥130 million ($1.2 million) - A Mighty Heart (2007) [#2 Overseas Market]
¥800 million ($7.4 million) - Beowulf (2007) [#3 Overseas Market]
¥2.50 billion ($24.2 million) - Wanted (2008) [#2 Overseas Market]
¥1.28 billion ($13.1 million) - Changeling (2009) [#1 Overseas Market]
¥2.05 billion ($23.9 million) - Salt (2010) [#1 Overseas Market]
¥1.87 billion ($22.7 million) - The Tourist (2011) [#1 Overseas Market]
¥6.53 billion ($63.5 million) - Maleficent (2014) [#1 Overseas Market]

Notes
>List excludes all voice-characters, though I did include Jolie's motion-capture role in Beowulf.
>By the Sea didn't receive an actual theatrical release in the market. It was only shown at festivals, followed by a very limited release in a few theaters.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (10/1
Just watch Ride Your Wave and it's surprisingly far exceed my expectation, i just notice that there are 3 water theme anime films this year (Weathering/Ride/Children) Ride is significantly better than Weather, I'll watch Children of the Sea in the next 2 but I doubt it can top Ride.
Also Ride Your Wave is firefighter theme of the three released this year again, the other two are Promare and Fire Force.

I didn't have time to post a Weekend Forecast this week, but after looking at the numbers, I probably wouldn't have anyway. Since last Saturday was impacted so heavily by the typhoon, this Saturday saw increases above 100/200% across the board versus last week. It would have been very difficult to post a reliable forecast under these circumstances.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opened this weekend, and it is...nearly bombing. It's going to debut in second place, well behind Joker's third weekend. A Disney live-action fantasy tentpole losing to a DC film in its third weekend is quite the headline.

I wasn't expecting Maleficent 2 to match the success of the original, and wouldn't have been shocked with a decline near 50% (not uncommon for questionable sequels released neither too early or too late), but it's actually looking at a possible 60%+ decline. Pretty harsh.
