Post Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Festival 2019
A bit of a weak Sunday (largely flat), but since it was the day before things return to normal (for adults, schools are still out for another week or two), the evening/night business was down significantly compared to last Sunday.

There was also a typhoon (downgraded to a cyclone) that affected some parts of the country over the weekend, and while it shouldn't have had a noticeable impact given its path and weakened state, it could have slightly deflated things a tad.

Overall though, so-so Sunday (and weekend) aside, Obon Festival 2019 was incredibly strong, and I feel confident in calling it the strongest Obon Festival on record at the box-office. I failed to find any year that could rival, much less beat it, since 1998.

So where is The Lion King expected to finish? Is it doing better or worse than you expected?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Festival 2019
Overall, better. I didn't have too high of hopes for it, but it had a good opening followed by a holiday week that improved its outlook some more. Like most of the films that have only been in release for a few weeks, it's still hard to give a projected total due to how they could behave post the holidays (the last seven days have more or less been holidays), especially once summer vacation ends (beginning of September). Different films simply perform differently post-holidays.

All that said... running the numbers for the next several weeks and giving it some good/great weekly holds (no weak or amazing ones), I expect it'll exceed ¥7 billion ($60 million+) and perhaps finish around ¥8 billion ($70 million+). But again, this isn't a prediction yet, just a rough projection.

I don't know too much about Yaguchi Shinobu, but looking at this filmography, I'd probably consider him more of a niche directer as you suggested. Waterboys was very popular critically, receiving 8 Japan Academy Award Nominations (winning 2) in 2001, but it wasn't a notable success at the box-office.

I checked the Eiren numbers for 2001 and you're right: Waterboys didn't even break 1 billion that year. I always thought of it as his breakthrough film, along with introducing Tsumabuki Satoshi to a wider audience.

On the other hand, according to Eiren and Box Office Mojo, Swing Girls earned 2.15 billion yen and was ranked 22 for 2004. Happy Flight earned 1.33 billion yen, while Robo-G earned 1.16 billion yen. I guess his films have been on a downward trend since Wood Job and Survival Family didn't even break 1 billion. It's too bad.

Around ¥5 billion ($45 million+). Running some numbers, I'm getting a finish right around Film Gold. But a lot depends, again, on how it behaves once we reach September. I don't really seeing it doing any less than ¥5 billion (or if it does, it'll be like ¥4.9 billion), but if it holds on well enough post-summer vacation, it could climb a little higher, perhaps around ¥5.5 billion ($52 million).

It also needs to do it before Weathering surpass it, If Weathering surpass it before it reach top 20 it'll never reach top 20 in the first place.

Let's track the situation together. I'm going to continue posting daily estimates for the rest of the month. If Aladdin falls from the Top 10 (it's been on the cusp for a week or so now), I'll still include it.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to 10 Billion
Fastest to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) - 90 Days or Less

25 - Spirited Away (2001)
28 - Your Name. (2016)
28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
31 - Ponyo (2008)
33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
34 - Weathering With You (2019) *Pending Wednesday Results*
35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
37 - Frozen (2014)
41 - Aladdin (2019)
42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
43 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004)
45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
47 - Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999)
50 - Avatar (2009)
52 - Finding Nemo (2003)
52 - Toy Story 3 (2010)
52 - The Last Samurai (2003)
53 - The Wind Rises (2013)
53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
53 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
57 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
74 - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

Toy Story 4 is now aiming to reach ¥10 billion between day 55-60 at its current pace. I won't include it on the list until its target day is more certain. I don't want to dismiss its great performance, but it really did slow down after its record-setting opening weekend. A potential sub-8 multiplier for a mid-July release is quite mediocre. I know that the audience reception was mixed, so that clearly played a part, but it may not beat Toy Story 3 or Finding Nemo after all.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Festival Actuals; Charts Updated!
Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire is receiving its 4D expansion this weekend, its 20th weekend in release. It already succeeded in becoming the most attended film in the long-running franchise, but fell just short of outgrossing last year's film. But this expansion will allow it to outgross last year's film and claim the highest-grossing title as well. And to those saying that's unfair and needs an asterisk, last year's film received a 4D expansion as well, and if you compare the two films before their 4D expansions, then this year's film would have come out on top anyway.

It's possible that Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire climbs back up near the Top 10, but it's difficult to predict. Pre-sales indicate it's viable for the Top 10 (Top 12 at least), but it's likely to be pre-sale heavy, so they could be a bit misleading. Let's wait and see.
