Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter debuted at ¥1,286,928,000 and was knocked to #2 by Beauty and the Beast on its second weekend.

It's a rare occurrence for a ¥1 billion+ debut to not repeat at #1 in their second weekend, but it has happened before. Toy Story 4 is the seventh time this has occurred:

2003: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (knocked off by Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!).
2005: War of the Worlds (knocked off by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith).
2006: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (knocked off by Tales from Earthsea).
2008: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (knocked off by Boys Over Flowers: Final).
2016: One Piece Film Gold (knocked off by Shin Godzilla).
2017: Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter (knocked off by Beauty and the Beast).
2019: Toy Story 4 (knocked off by Weathering With You).

This list is since 1998. And it's safe to say that no film before 1998 opened above ¥1 billion since Princess Mononoke broke the opening weekend record in 1997 with ¥750 million (¥745 million, I believe). Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was the first film to open above ¥1 billion.

That sounds about right, though it looks like it'll open a little higher (say, ¥450 million or so). It'll be close between it and Toy Story 4 for second place, though I'm leaning toward Toy Story 4 keeping its second place position at the moment.

I'm working on the August and September release schedules right now for posting later, and noticed something worth mentioning here first.

Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire is getting a 4D expansion of 77 theaters on August 16th. The same thing happened with last year's film (just much later in the year). The Fist of Blue Sapphire broke the franchise admissions record, but is sitting 0.65% (or ¥61 million) away from breaking the franchise revenue record. This expansion will be more than enough to get it there, and should add ¥200/300 million ($2/3 million) to its gross.

Early 2018 is when it starting to gain traction, and then by mid-2018 it more or less became the standard. The traditional 2-day weekend (Sat. and Sun.) remains the same though.

>Weathering With You will repeat once again atop the box-office. Makoto Shinkai's latest likely exceeded the ¥5 billion milestone on Thursday, its 14th-day in release, which is the same amount of time it took Your Name. to reach the mark. Weathering With You has been keeping pace/slightly outpacing (in total) Your Name. so far, but I do believe it'll begin to fall behind beginning this weekend. It's still a bit difficult to project a likely total, but it seems like it is heading somewhere around the ¥15 billion ($140/$150 million) milestone, especially with the Obon Festival holiday period a little over a week away to really bolster its gross.

>Toy Story 4 continues to do strong business. I'm a bit concerned what will happen to it next weekend when The Lion King opens. Disney likes to give their latest blockbuster as many screens/showtimes as possible, which usually results in their holdover(s) taking a significant hit. As long as it doesn't take a crippling hit next week (40%+), it'll enter the Obon Festival holiday period on strong footing and cement itself as Pixar's highest grossing film in the market.

>Hobbs & Shaw will see a noticeable drop from the main series of films, likely dropping 30/40% compared to The Fate of the Furious. This isn't surprising, it regularly happens with spin-offs. And I will say that if it ends up seeing a decline around 30% versus 40%, I'd consider it pretty good.

>Dragon Quest: Your Story is a rare CGI animated film (remember, Japan remains almost exclusively a 2D animated market) based on the very popular Dragon Quest video game series. I don't know too much about this film yet, but I'll do some research on it before the end of the weekend. It's going to do solid business (CGI local films can struggle), and if it comes in around the forecast above, it could wind up with a surprising total since the Obon Festival holiday period is just over a week away.

And a side note: There was a lot of rain and thunderstorms during the end of July, so it's possible that the sunny weather (albeit hot) could have a small negative impact on the weekend box-office. Weather rarely affects the box-office in Japan (unless it's particularly awful, i.e. a major typhoon), but since the first two weeks of summer vacation was very rainy, I could see people (family and teens) taking advantage of the sunny weather this weekend.

Dragon Quest is a wildly popular video game series of course. By revenue, it matches Miyazaki.

Also aren't they making a CGI Lupin III movie eventually?

I know what Dragon Quest is, and its relevance and huge popularity, just not much about the film that debuted yesterday.

And yes, Lupin III is getting the CGI treatment this December. It looks great, and it'll probably be well-received since Takashi Yamazaki is directing it. Yamazaki is one of Japan's biggest modern directors, and he also directed Doraemon's first CGI film in 2014 that was a huge hit at the box-office.

EDIT: So.. Takashi Yamazaki is the director of the Dragon Quest film as well! He's been very, very busy. Three very notable films from him this year. He is also the director of The Great War of Archimedes that opened last weekend.

Oh I was just trying to make a point about something. I do expect you to know about Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest VI in 1995 probably made around 30 billion yen in revenue, similar to Spirited Away.

Kind of disappoints me that Japan is starting to get onto the CGI train, as they were holding out for a long time.

I think Miyazaki said something about the Japanese creative mind not being suited for 3D animation.

Yeah. Dragon Quest has also largely maintained its cultural significance after over 30 years. The video game sales aren't what they were in the 90s, of course, but they're still huge. Dragon Quest XI sold 2.1 million copies in two days in 2017. I'll be picking up the Definitive Edition of the game next month. :)

I still think they'll mostly be novelty releases.

It's very interesting that Takashi Yamazaki has been at the helm of the notable three so far: Stand By Me, Doraemon, Dragon Quest: Your Story, and Lupin III.

They literally sold Dragon Quest VI for over 10,000 yen (about $100) and it sold over 3 million copies.

I think they're kind of bungling it now. With MMOs and multi platform releases. I wonder how Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama are hanging in there. Koichi Sugiyama is of course, going to completely retire soon. Interesting that all three of them were so famous in 1986 for the first Dragon Quest that they were used to market the game.
