I think it would have still opened big but the legs would have been weak and it would have done 200-225m total. So yeah, release date.

I really enjoyed it - I expected very little from it going in and for me it was the most refreshing surprise of the year. I had not seen Justice League.

Obviously the release date helped immensely, coupled with the fact that the holiday competition was super uninspiring. Even though it's more a summer movie than winter, it had the kind of fantastical vibe that made it the go-to Xmas for all demos.

Also, it had a romance, strong female characters, and Mamoa, which is a lot more than any other movie had to offer younger women (including Mary Poppins, which I felt from day one would skew very old and young but not so much for the core 13-49 range). I completely failed to consider this when predicting it.

I also think Mamoa is a boxoffice draw. The audience seemed to react favorably to him. Reminiscent of Dwayne Johnson.

No Star Wars. That pretty much made this the must see film of winter, despite everyone thinking it would be Poppins.

Also it's just a really enjoyable film. I'm very surprised that it seems like more than half of the users here are pretty blase about it.

Pretty small sample size for that I think, being this is just his first hit. I don't expect him to become a bo star aside from this role.

I do wonder if Amber Heard's Mera got some butts in seats. Aside from the X-Men movies, the genre really doesn't give us female characters with "powers", as in flying, zapping, shooting webs. That is, something visually spectacular and unique, which is a big part of the wish fulfillment inherent in the genre.

I think the film seemed more fun compared to the dark and brooding like the preivous DC films minus Wonder Woman. Hopefully WB learns from this and Wonder Woman. Only Batman should be dark and brooding.

An iconic hero that had never been adapted to the big screen + a hot, sexy, cool actor that could take him into the current zeitgeist
