Under 150 mil? A failure by Disney considering they chose it over Solo

I feel like it still might do big Christmas business but if it doesn't... the movie is just alright. Had they made a product that was irresistible then it would've done the huge numbers we all thought it'd do in total.

For starters, one could argue the Mary Poppins is way past her time. A woman floating around on an umbrella singing show tunes is no longer cool for this generation's youth, while the older demographic may have felt this sequel was an unnecessary cash grab.

Emily Blunt. Carrie Fisher already showed last year that she was a better Poppins.

- I made the argument with Jurassic World's success that if nobody had made a movie yet about a dinosaur theme park where they escape, it would still be a kick ass idea for a blockbuster. Likewise for It, scary ass clown is a good horror idea. Mary Poppins is the opposite where in a vacuum a musical about a magical nanny sounds like box office poison if you remove the fact that an iconic first film exists. People who aren't attached to the original aren't going to care that much.

- The kids have grown up, but Poppins is the same age, talks different and is hotter. It's confusing. A full remake may have been the better choice. I understand Blunt plays the character more similarly to how she's originally written, so just re-do it like Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

- The Christopher Robin trailer did a good job in my opinion of establishing McGregor's character has become a workaholic who's lost the magic, and the reintroduction of Pooh to save him becomes effective. I feel the similar plot in MPR looks less effective because it already stars kids who still have that sense of magic and enjoy flying kites.

- The film needed to sell that it has real heart instead of being carefully crafted by Disney to make you feel that it has heart but really wants to take your money

This is too damn soon. We have no idea the numbers it will post this coming week. I still think it's not going sub 150 Million.

It may end up being the case that this disappoints, but it's very premature to assume it will. Greatest Showman opened the Wednesday before Christmas just like this. It didn't even hit 50M before the new year, but ended up with 174M. This won't have that movies amazing run, but it's very likely to have a leggy run. The first 3 days of each film...

The Greatest Showman
Wed $2,451,071
Thu $2,147,660 -12.4%
Fri $3,126,629 45.6% $7,725,360

Mary Poppins Returns
Wed $4,763,547
Thu $4,051,124 -15%
Fri $6,700,000 65.4% $15,514,671

As you can see, for the first 3 days Poppins compares very favorably to Showman. 200M Dom isn't out of the question. Anyone with realistic expectations would be happy with a gross over 150M.

Again... While I do think Poppins will have fine legs Showman is not a good comparison. Showman opened like a flop but was propelled to phenomenon status thanks to its soundtrack and WoM. Poppins ain't getting that.

Next week will be very telling but something like 150m for Poppins isn't so bad. Expectations just blew out of proportion. Overseas on the otherhand...

It's doing 150m, and even has a great chance at 175m. 200m is most likely out of reach but not impossible.

The film has good, but not exceptional WOM. It certainly seems like something people will be willing to check out later in its run without rushing to the theater as well.

A What Didn't Go Right? Thread would make more sense. It doesn't seem to have good WOM among fans of the original, so they probably could have focused on creating something they would like as well as something people who don't know the original could enjoy.

Maybe they could have tried to release it closer to Saving Mr. Banks so that Mary Poppins was back in the public eye when this came out.

Mary Poppins isn't really that culturally relevant anymore. It's a classic and nostalgia and etc. but people were not clamouring for a sequel or remake. It feels too old fashioned and uptight compared to modern family films. This type of film clearly has an audience (Paddington and Christopher Robin did $75m-$100m) but it's not that big.

Also, families and musical-loving audiences have been overserved between Grinch, Bumblebee, even Aquaman on the family side and Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody on the musical side. This kind of fell between the cracks, despite the big brand name.

This is a really good insight. It needed a modern update in terms of the look and performance, that's why Depp's Willy Wonka worked so well. Another good example is Peter Rabbit: I absolutely hated what they did with the character, but there's no denying it worked. An old fashioned Peter Rabbit in the spirit of the original animated shorts wouldn't have done half as well.

Nothing against Blunt, I actually like her, and love every original song from the first MP movie, but I'm so tired of Disney capitalizing everything, so glad Mary Bombing is flopping!

It's not going under $150m. It will likely get to $200m.

No chance it gets to $200 million from that opening, i.hope. It will probably clear $150 million, PROBABLY. Still not a guarantee, and I think it will crawl there if it gets there. It won't clear $165 million, though.

It will probably get 170m. It doesn’t need good WOM, the type of movie and release date are as good for a multiplier as it gets. Aquaman will help the multiplier since it will hurt the opening more than the holds (like TLJ and Jumanji). The Thursday hold showed it doesn’t have much frontloading. If the increase is good enough next week, it has a shot at 200m.

So even if it manages to somewhat save face domestically it looks like this could still be considered a bomb with those abysmal OS numbers. It would astonish me if this ended up not even beating Solo WW, but I don't know how likely that is.

That $130m budget is crazy. This should've been 90m at most.

I think it's got a good chance getting to $200m. No big openers around Christmas day will help it. And it's a film made for the holiday season. It will remain a top three choice for moviegoers for two more weeks.

Will barely get past 150 mil and possibly outgrossed by the Spiderverse. Poppins once again floppins

It will hit 165m but it’s still not a flop. Just widely missed expectations. It won’t lose money.
