Re: Love the Coopers
Love the Coopers does everything right when it comes to Christmas movies. It boasts a stellar cast, it doesn't resort to high-energy hijinks to further scenes, and it's a semi-serious take on the ensemble family film.
So why does it suck so much?
The film features a solid lineup of talent (Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Marisa Tomei, Olivia Wilde, Ed Helms, Amanda Seyfried, Alan Arkin, June Squibb, Timothee Chalamet). Like most ensemble films, it's difficult to strike the right balance, but Love the Coopers often effortlessly bounces between scenes, as the bulk of the film is the setup to the big Christmas gathering. But in doing that, it's also incredibly difficult to grasp onto any scenes or characters. Once you get settled into one story, we're whisked away to the next. And all scenes are interwoven by a misplaced narration by Steve Martin. It's never unpleasant but is equally unnecessary.
The story lingers on morose for most of the running time. It's never depressing, but the upbeat nature of holiday flicks is completely absent here. That's not a bad thing at all, this wouldn't work in any way if the film settled on a lighter tone throughout. But it's all washed away by a painfully saccharine ending, following a typical third act shock moment.
It's hard to pinpoint exactly where Love the Coopers goes off the rails. It's as if someone took the extended family nature of The Family Stone, the silliness of Christmas Vacation, the parents-on-the-verge-of-divorce couple from Surviving Christmas, the weaving narration of A Christmas Story, and, the melancholy tone of Bad Santa, threw it all into a blender and hoped for the best. It imitates the best Christmas movies well, but never does enough to stand on its own. I can think of a worse time to spend on a Christmas movie, but if you're looking for a new classic, this isn't it.

Re: Love the Coopers
There are so many unlikely moments and scenarios in here too, the most egregious of which is that Diane Keaton and Marisa Tomei could be sisters. Not half-sisters or step-sisters where the father married a woman half his age. They're shown in a brief flashback and they're clearly only two or three years apart.

Re: Love the Coopers
That is odd. There is a 20 year age gap between the actors. Both look good for their age but pretending they are two or three years apart is odd.
Also, I didnt even know this film existed. Surprising as it has such a large cast of well known actors.

Re: Love the Coopers
I should have pointed out Diane Keaton does look great for her age. But Marisa Tomei looks even better for her age. So it's an unusual choice.
Yeah, this one kind of slipped under the radar three years ago. The awful reviews kept me from watching it at the time, but I'm a fan of the Christmas subgenre of films, and it's definitely not the worst. It's one of those films where a really, really good movie is buried in there somewhere.
