Crazy Rich Asians - What Went Right?
It had a modest opening day of $5m before strong WOM spread to a $26.5m opening weekend.
Now, it already has $110.9m in just 19 days with much more to come. This will now become the highest grosser for any comedy domestically since Ted.

Re: Crazy Rich Asians - What Went Right?
As with every success story, it's never just one thing. The book was popular and there are a lot of Asians in the US. It's also apparently feel-good, and as we know the film's target demographic is often under-served, so when one comes along that connects the WOM spreads like a Californian wildfire. A little bit of its success is down to white America using it as a culture treat. Oh, and the reviews helped greatly.

I'd say it's more like Greek wedding where people think they are experiencing a new culture while watching a feel good movie.

Re: Crazy Rich Asians - What Went Right?
Romance is a lucrative genre when they try, like everything else it needs a good concept and execution, but with half the population being women it's a joke there aren't more anticipated releases in the genre

Using the logic that black people boosted the box office numbers for Black Panther, perhaps crazy people boosted it for Crazy Rich Asians.

The Prince and Me has been developing a cult following for years and they were hungry for something new.

Re: Crazy Rich Asians - What Went Right?
I have no idea because I thought the trailers were unfunny, the actress meh and even after watching it wasn't that impressed but I guess the book was way more popular than I thought. The reviews were Stellar so that helps and clunkers competing against it helped too. Now it's just that type of film folks keep recommending other folks Must go see.

Re: Crazy Rich Asians - What Went Right?
Curious to analyze the reasons why certain films start off with very low drops and then experience steeper declines.
First three weekends - WOM spreads to the curious and inner circles of the excited ‘early adopters
Subsequent weeks rely on casual moviegoers, those curious about the hype but weren’t on a rush. .
