Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
On Friday, Solo: A Star Wars Story opened about 64% below Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 35% below Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars: The Force Awakens didn't receive a full Friday release, so it's not worth using as a comparison.
Rogue One will be the obvious and most fair comparison, so opening with about two-thirds of its audience on the first day, while a pretty significant drop, isn't too bad all things considered. Solo will likely to be a bit backloaded as well, since Sunday is a national discount day.
If Solo follows a similar trajectory as Rogue One for the entire weekend, it'll be targeting a debut between ¥425-450 million ($3.8-4.0 million) for the weekend frame, and a 3-day total around ¥600 million ($5.5 million). This projected opening weekend would put it on course for a total between ¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million). I'd say the chance of Japan becoming its #1 overseas market are good.
I'll have some Saturday pre-sale data later this evening.

>Solo: A Star Wars Story continues to track roughly 35% behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story based on Saturday's pre-sales, but I believe it'll improve slightly (~5% better) on that number due to Sunday being a national discount day. As mentioned in my post above, if the projected opening weekend is accurate, it'll be aiming for a total between ¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million), likely making Japan its #1 overseas market.
>The latest Anpanman release, the thirtieth entry in the long-running franchise, is outpacing last year's film in pre-sales by a comfortably margin, so this year's release should get the series back over the ¥100 million debut mark.
>Shoplifters will continue to hold well, and will likely reach the ¥3 billion milestone in its fourth-weekend of release. It will become only the second domestic live-action release this year to have achieved this accomplishment, and a total over ¥4 billion ($40 million) is looking more likely every week.
>Punk Samurai Slash Down has had decent presence online, but its pre-sales are weak. Unless the majority of those interested in the film are waiting for Sunday (discount day), it's probably barely going to make the Top 5. If its numbers don't improve significantly over the weekend, this will be yet another disappointment for Toei's live-action releases.
>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer isn't going anywhere yet, and is going to easily remain in the Top 10 in its twelfth-weekend of release (might even hit Top 5 again...). The film has many special events happening today which has boosted its admissions versus last Saturday by a huge margin, and combined with Sunday's discount day, it's likely going to experience a big increase -- probably bigger than I'm projecting, but I'm being conservative here.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/30-07/01)
Solo: A Star Wars Story ended Saturday about 25% behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a solid improvement after trailing it by 35% on Friday and in pre-sales ahead of the weekend frame.
I think it'll fall a bit shy of ¥500 million over the weekend frame (and ¥650-700 million for the 3-day), but it's an attainable figure now if Sunday delivers as it should. If it opens to this level, then it'll likely reach ¥3 billion (about $30 million). That'll, of course, be the lowest total for a "Star Wars" film in Japan, but it'd also be quite strong compared to its performance everywhere else, and Japan becoming its #1 overseas market is almost guaranteed.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/30-07/01)
lol, I'm sure Disney will be very proud to have Japan as its #1 market with a total gross of just $30 million. It is pathetic how bad its international performance has been. It is the box office failure of the year and should be studied at university.
Just looking over its international grosses, and in Argentina, China, Finland, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and United Arab Emirates it got a multiplier of less than 2. That's not exactly unheard of in some of those markets, but still not a good sign. Finland is a surprise.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/30-07/01)
Well, Disney or any studio would always want more money, but $30 million is above the average expectation, I believe. It's probably going above $30 million, too, following a great Sunday performance.
Solo actually improved each day versus Rogue One, and based on admissions, only came in 11% below it for the weekend, after trailing 35% on Friday, 24% on Saturday, and it actually won Sunday by 3% due to the discount day.
I'll have Weekend Estimates up soon, and Solo likely came in above ¥500 million over the weekend frame (¥700 million for the 3-day), which will make it the second biggest opening weekend for a foreign film this year (third biggest since December).

>Solo: A Star Wars Story was consistently tracking 35% behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story since opening on Friday, but improved upon that number every day over the weekend, to end up trailing its predecessor by just 11% in admissions. In revenue, due to Sunday being a discount day, it'll likely open around 20% below it. If the estimate holds, it's the second biggest opening weekend for a foreign film released this year (behind Avengers: Infinity War). It's very likely going to reach/exceed the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone with this result, and could reach ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million) if it maintains a strong enough presence in theaters heading into Summer Vacation (mid-July) and then Obon Festival (mid-August).
Overall, a very good debut for Solo, all things considered. I'm honestly surprised by its performance so far given the average reviews, no known names, and dismal box-office returns in the U.S. and elsewhere before reaching Japan -- typically, these three factors can totally sink a film in the market, even if they have a strong fanbase.
>The latest Anpanman release, the thirtieth entry in the long-running franchise, appears to have got the series back over the ¥100 million mark in its debut.
>Shoplifters continues to hold well, and likely exceeded the ¥3 billion milestone in its fourth-weekend of release. It will become only the second domestic live-action release this year to have achieved this accomplishment, and a total over ¥4 billion ($40 million) is looking more likely every week.
>Punk Samurai Slash Down has had decent presence online, but its poor pre-sales proved to hold-up in relation to its weekend admissions, and it didn't come close to reach the ¥100 million mark. Unfortunately for distributor Toei, they'll have to mark this one down as yet another disappointment/bomb in their live-action archives.
>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer didn't increase over the weekend as I was expecting (though it was up 2/3% Saturday-to-Saturday), but a sub-20% drop in its twelfth-weekend of release is still remarkable. A thirteenth week in the Top 10 is also looking likely now, as well. It's become the highest-grossing franchise domestic animated film of all-time, and is about to cross the ¥8.5 billion (~$78 million) mark. It's going to be very tough for the upcoming Summer blockbusters to match/beat this performance.

Re: Japan Box Office: Most Weeks in the Top 10
Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer joins the lists below, becoming only the second animated-franchise film to make the lists, after Stand By Me, Doraemon. A thirteenth-weekend in the Top 10 is looking likely now, too, which will set a new record for an animated-franchise film.
It's also just the tenth sequel/prequel to make the lists.

June is one of the weakest months at the box-office in Japan, but it is home to the biggest opening weekend ever (The Matrix Reloaded), as well as the fifth biggest opening ever (Harry Potter 3). I've never had to post this month's biggest opening weekends before, because only two films have even debuted above ¥500 million (if Solo's estimate holds) this decade.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
It has no distributor or release date at the moment, but it's one of those films that could be released 6 months to a year from now.
Gaga, an independent distributor in Japan, released the first film.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
Umi no Hi (Ocean Day) Weekend is coming up, and with it begins the start of Summer Vacation (mid-July to late-August) in the market. I'll provide very frequent updates over the holiday weekend.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will debut, and it'll become the widest release ever in terms of seating and showtimes in modern history (past ~50 years). It's benefiting greatly from the usual weak May and June box-office, a lack of a typical third major opener on this weekend, and is going to monopolize the premium formats. Aside from Pokemon: Everyone's Story, also debuting this upcoming weekend, which will occupy the biggest screens in the morning at some locations, Jurassic World 2 is otherwise receiving the biggest screens at nearly every theater, with showtimes running for 18-20 hours over the weekend at several urban locations.
Unfortunately, this year's Ocean Day Weekend only has 2 major films opening (Jurassic World 2 and Pokemon 21), when it typically has at least three major releases (Pixar is missing this year, since Disney put Incredibles 2 in August instead) and one or two smaller releases, so it's probably not going to fare well versus most past Ocean Day Weekends. However, this also happens to the first Ocean Day Weekend with all openers opening on Friday rather than Saturday, so it's sort of an extended 4-Day holiday weekend this year.

It has no distributor or release date at the moment, but it's one of those films that could be released 6 months to a year from now.
Gaga, an independent distributor in Japan, released the first film.
Thanks. Hope it gets a release, if only so I can get a chirashi.
