Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
I think it must have come out on VOD/DVD in The Netherlands, not theatrical, because it isn't listed here. And I am so surprised to see it get a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland (and basically anywhere outside of China).

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
So it opened in Turkey at #2 with $104k. It's up to $11.6m in China after 4 days.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
It seems that Escape Plan 2 could not make as much in China, as the first did domestically in the US.
And actually Escape Plan's $40m in China was not that much either, it's respectable, but targeting the Chinese market with its sequels don't just shout sure-fire success to me based on that.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
It definitely will not make $20m in China, let alone $25m.
And agreed; $40m even in 2013, wasn't a lot. Bit of an odd one. They ran with it because they couldn't get the phrase "China was its biggest market" out of their heads. China is also always growing, so they thought they were quids in. Its success in China did show potential, and if they had only made a decent film, it could have made another $40m or maybe more.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
I imagine it will leave most Chinese cinemas tomorrow. Today could be the last day for anyone to see it at the cinema. It has now grossed $12.79 million.

Well, here's a little triumph. It out-opened Sicario: Day of the Soldado in Hungary. Opened to #4 with $84,044, when S:DotS opened at #5.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
So it's Portugal and Singapore this weekend. Portugal ain't focusing on the football anymore, so perhaps they'll see it. Looking for $80k. Singapore are more sophisticated than the Chinese, but still fairly Asian, so hopefully it can get a hundred thousand there.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
It's out in the UK on 20th July. I don't see why it can't earn as much as, say, 7 Days in Entebbe. So somewhere in the $400k region. Which is about 10% of the first film. Hoping for more but don't think the UK critics will be kind to it.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
I just think it's frustrating that Huang Xiao Ming has such a large role but is not shown/ mentioned on the poster...I understand that would sell less, but I feel this is basically just cheating. I guess it's safe to say it's a 50% Chinese film, don't like the fact they hide that.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
It makes sense to hide it. Nobody in the UK knows Huang Xiaoming. There is a small population of Chinese people in the UK, with almost all very connected to China and its apps, so with its user ratings in China I would not want to bet on them seeing it. Signature are doing the right thing. Highlighting Stallone, who is loved in the UK, and Bautista, and telling people that Schwarzenegger is not in it ("New Team"). And the poster is following a similar design to the first... They know they have a hard task in convincing people to see it. It will be coming out later than most markets, so netizens will already know it's not a good movie. Plus, there's no Schwarzy. It's all about damage limitations now, and I think they're doing the best they can.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
The best way to do damage limitations would be not to do a third one, but as it is already in post-production...sigh. If you look at Stallone's future projects, the two that look more interesting and a change of pace from the constant sequels ( Scarpa and Tough as They Come) are only announced. He should finally move on with those two. Backtrace sounds derivative and one of those B-actioners filmed in Eastern Europe.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
But unlike the Chinese poster, at least they’re honest with the “and” Bautista, because it really is just maybe the 4th biggest role at best.

The UK poster I shared above shows up in Google Image search. We must be the only place on the Internet to have it.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
This weekend:
Malaysia Greece
The first opened with $900k in Malaysia and around $40k in Greece. There is no way it matches those figures. A much smaller screen count is likely, so I'd hope for just $200k in Malaysia and still $30k in Greece because the first opened very small then expanded in its 2nd weekend.

Re: Escape Plan 2 (INTL)
So its run in China is essentially over. It was inside the top ten for 14 days and made $13,560,000. It had 3 million admissions. I can see showtimes for a few cinemas in and around the my city, but they are just 1 per cinema, a handful of cinemas, and at weird times like 00:15. So it's over, and China is its largest market so far. United Arab Emirates is its second largest with $1.9m so far. I expect the UK to become its 2nd or 3rd largest eventually. It should easily get over the $20m worldwide mark.
