Nice to see DP2 getting good reviews, but it's opening will still depend heavily on the amount of buzz. The hype doesn't feel as big as it was for the first, but people seem to love the character and I suspect not having a holiday effect it's 3-Day this time will push more demand upfront.

An eye-popping 3,145 theaters are showing Show Dogs. :whaa:

To be fair those aren't really for young children. There hasn't really been anything for them except Sherlock Gnomes and Sgt. Stubby.

Do we think AIW will suffer a big blow even though Deadpool is rated 'R'? It's going to absorb a lot of the same audience.

I feel being from Marvel will help specially because I see AIW being the perfect candidate for a double feature with DP2 and will help grosses for both movies. It will still drop big due to loss of PLF and prime showtimes but I think it can do sub-55% drop or +/-1% there.

Possibly a record low performance? I see lots of empty shows.

Agreed but those two movies flopped even when the marketplace was empty and that has got to do with these Marvel movies attracting families to these big numbers. I don't feel SD will benefit much from lack of family options.

Sitting in China, it's hard to gauge buzz in the US. Maybe I should move to Singapore, which seems to be the perfect vantage point to peer into US society. ;)

Your comparison of JL/WW is full of problems. Justice League targeted older than Deadpool. Deadpool is a relatively new, hip, meta superhero. Justice League has been around for 50 years, and targets older moviegoers as well as youngsters. Plus, JL's opening was not just affected by reviews, but also BvS and it looked shit. WW, on the other hand, was inflated not just because of reviews, but because of the female movement at the time.

And I didn't say there was no buzz for Deadpool 2. I asked a question, because from where I am I just don't see it.

:funny: You should visit once and we can go around. Its not that far ;)

Yes I know that comparison was not apt but I threw in that movie because you mentioned "reviews won't matter a bit".

And I agree that the buzz around it rightly feels less compared to the first but then again its releasing in the heat of summer compared to Feb where it could easily get the attention. The first was decently received and this still represents something different in the genre that seems to become monotonous. Thor did well largely due to this as well (being different and funny).

If the reviews for DP2 were similar to say Solo (with more to come) I wouldn't have thought it would matter much but now that its certified fresh after 100+ reviews would definitely help it here.

Yes, those flopped, which would only help Show Dogs, IMO. The audience still hasn't been satisfied. Though if I had children I'd never take them to this lol.

Gnomes flop should have helped Sgt. Stubby but it didn't and I feel the same will be applicable for Show Dogs. The only difference here is that SD has much bigger reach with those theater count but that hasn't stopped movies from flopping before.

Has Show Dogs received any kind of marketing? I literally don't know a single person who is even aware it's coming out. If kids aren't talking about it, that's bad news.

I've seen a surprising amount of TV spots for it on various cable channels (ones not even aimed at kids).

They're awful spots, so it's probably just hurting it worse. Families are generally OK at avoiding pure crap movies.

Not aiming at kids is stupid. I guess there will be a lot of empty seats.

I have seen ads for Show Dogs on tv but they are awful. Not sure what adult would want to take their kids to it.

Much better family fare on the horizon. Looks to be a wasted cast situation.

Show Dogs still withholding reviews, probably an ominous sign.

As a parent, it's always Netflix when reviews are atrocious. I have to sit through it, too!
