Surprisingly good! Darkest Hour being the big upset is kind of boring, but there are some cool things sprinkled in there. Logan even getting a screenplay nom is miraculous. Baby Driver and Star Wars got proper recognition in the techs too. The biggest snub is obviously Franco, but we all knew it was coming. And I’m sure Denzel has never ever ever even once made a woman feel uncomfortable in his entire life.

Most importantly, PTA got in without knocking out Nolan! So as far as 2018 awards go, this is probably the best we will get.

Phantom Thread! McDonagh missing BD seems big, if McCarthy got in for Spotlight he could have here if it's BP winner

In retrospect the Hong Chau not getting nominated was predictable... These voters aren't going to watch to Downsizing

Three Billboards will have to pull an Argo to win best picture. It now looks like Lady Bird for Best Picture and Del Toro for director.

How is Lady Bird winning BP?

If Jordan is getting Screen. Guillermo Director and McDormand Actress. There's no way Lady Bird could nor should win BP. Also, if Billboards wins screen over both Jordan and Gerwig then I guess Billboards would win BP at that point, maybe.

However, wouldn't it be just exciting to see Del Toro win screen? That'd settle everything.

I'd say Logan is probably better than most of the films on that BP list!

So The Shape of Water is front runner for both BP and BD now.

I think Phantom Thread is the big upset. It got a lot of love. Nobody was predicting it to make Picture or Director. Or even Supporting Actress for that matter. But Darkest Hour would be second. Felt like it didn't have much love but I guess it was right up the Academy's alley.

I can't wait to see Mystery of Love performed at the ceremony.

No Tom Hanks is a shock, and would only ever happen in a post-#OscarsSoWhite year. Same reason Get Out is getting any nominations at all. But really, these nominations are kind of boring. Black people got their noms, so there's nothing to moan about. I bet they're livid! They'll have to wait until Oscar night to complain about being snubbed.

That's just stupid. For whatever reaso the Academy just does not like Hanks anymore. Him missing for The Post is far less shocking than him missing for Captain Phillips. He also missed for Bridge of Spies and Sully, so apparently the voters just don't want him on the ballot anymore.

Wow, yeah. I did not realise that he hasn't been nominated for 18 years.

Hanks not being nominated for so long is definitely crazy, he's had plenty (I think) worthy roles in that time.

Actor in a Leading Role
Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out)
Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.)

I didn't see Denzel in Roman, it does not seem one of his better roles, let alone better films, but I definitely don't get Kaluuya got in.
This definitely feels like some other agenda than nominating the best performances.

As predicted at the start of the season, this should still just be between Oldman and Lewis anyway.

I think Hanks has been typecast. He delivered good performances but they were the same calm, experienced leader-type, heroic role over and over.

Kaluuya's facial expression really captured me. He made the sunken place believable.

The Shape of Water and Dunkirk led the pack mostly because of tech noms. A Get Out, Lady Bird or Three Billboards BP win would not surprise me.

I know, it's crazy. He has been considered Academy's darling before, but then they just...stopped.

The Shape of Water and Dunkirk I currently see splitting the techs, but either one could sweep the techs and leave the other empty handed (at least Dunkirk could be empty handed, though it would be odd for The Shape of Water to win best director and nothing else.)

Umm, but The Shape of Water also received a screenplay nod and THREE acting nods. Don't underestimate its support outside the techs. Get Out and Lady Bird missed the super important Editing nom and Three Bilboards missed BD. The Shape of Water checked all the boxes.
