Post DVDs and Blu Rays
Does anyone actually ever buy DVDs or Blu Rays anymore?

Everything is now digital. iTunes, Google Video, Amazon Video, etc.

I still download Blu Ray torrents. Does that count? :D

But I don't like the fact that everything is becoming streaming only. Editions packed with various audio commentaries (which weren't always insightful or good, but when they were they were brilliant to listen to while the movie runs in the background) and extras are dieing out because digital platforms only care about putting the content itself on stream and I find that to be a real shame.

I've never seen one, but my granddaddy told me something about 'em - were they the ones that turned seventy-eight times a minute?

Yes. I've tried limiting what I buy though and I wait till Black Friday for new releases as pretty much every blockbuster ends up being dirt cheap.

I remember the days of individuals with spectacularly comprehensive movie libraries on VHS tape. It was so sad to see them shovelling their worthlless horde into dumpsters when that media died. :(

VHS is not dead. DVD will die and never be seen again (like the LaserDisc), but VHS will live on because of the collectors market.

I hope I never have to see a VHS tape in person again. The nostalgia of it brings back great memories of wandering through local video stores (no Blockbuster), but... fuck, I don't miss anything else about them.

I still buy Bluray, I'm never going to not collect as long as they're available. I only buy DVD when a movie is not available on Bluray, or it is and it's impossible to get it.

The last blu ray I bought was Civil War and then it was on netflix a month later. Lesson learned.

It won't stay on Netflix once GOTG2 comes on it.

Only in rare cases, when I want the extra stuff they put on them. I think the last one I got was Zootopia because I wanted all the outtakes and commentary and stuff.

Post Re: DVDs and Blu Rays
I never had a big VHS collection, but what little I did have I still have. It's cool. Wish I had more though.

But VHS sales were never big in Croatia I think. Rentals were very cheap and the difference between renting and owning was at least 10 times. And you do not rewatch that many movies at least 10 times to justify the buying of VHS. And as a kid I used to do crazy bingewatches - at least 3-5 movies a day.

When DVD's arrived the market did get a little more healthy here. For some reason the video rental stores never priced DVD's competitively and IMHO charged too much (a one day rent equaled to maybe 1/6 of the DVD price) and unlike with VHS you weren't done with DVD after you watched the movie. Especially if the DVD was filled with loads of additional material. At least for me that's a reason why I have a bigger DVD collection than the VHS one. It made sense to buy a DVD you could watch for days (depending on the time you had) just for the original content without any rewatch. At that time I was in high school and I didn't have that much time to binge stuff, so buying the movies I really liked on DVD made sense opposed to renting it for 3 or 4 days to fully watch every bit of extra they put on and nearly match the price of the DVD.

That doesn't sway me. I like having the physical copy of certain movies. And nothing seems to stay on Netflix forever.

The only thing I won't get are Netflix shows on DVD, because they only seem to release on DVD, not Bluray (at least the ones I watch).

I still have about 55 VHS tapes (Pre Special Edition OT, and some other cool ones) But I'll never be done buying DVDs. The only thing that has really changed is the rush factor to getting them. Now I wait for discount ones.

I think the last DVDs/Blu's I bought were in 2012 - Avengers, GoT Season 1 and Senna. Its just no longer practical.

As for VHS, I dont think i ever bought a movie on VHS. Recorded heaps of films, grands prix, wrestling and tv shows over the years but never bought any films.

I remember being 4 years old, and my dad had just bought two films on VHS, Home Alone and Terminator 2 for Christmas 91. Back then VHS were like $35 a piece. My mom was like you can't show him that, my dad's argument was Home Alone was more violent then T2, which started a rule in the house. As long as there was no nudity I could watch R rated films.

I've always found the difference in parents reactions to sex vs violence to be an illuminating view on the state of our modern world. No problem letting the kiddies soak up the good old ultraviolence, but if they ever catch a glimpse of nudity it will surely be their doom.

Of course. Most blu rays are combo'd with the DVD+Digital and now you have some that are 4K/Blu Ray/DVD/Digital but regular DVD is on it's way out. I still college them because I like having the physical object to own and I don't just buy digital only.

I think it had less to do with that, and more with the awkwardness of watching a sex scene with your 6 year old child, less questions to answer I'd assume. I never had a problem with violence. I'm sure if I did, I never would have saw most of the films I saw as a kid. It's much easier to say that guy isn't dying than those people are just dryhumping naked.

It just wasnt as common to buy movies on VHS here. But DVDs were another story offcourse.

I think i may still have Lion King and Dirty Dancing on VHS - both left by an ex-girlfriend after we broke up.
