Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (New Year)
Weekend Actuals will be posted soon. New Year falling on the weekend had an incredible varying effect on each individual film.

And Jiffy, I have Spirited Away's weekly performance in terms of yen. I'll post it a little latter.

06 (08) ¥107,000,000 ($930,000), -21%, ¥1,450,000,000 ($12.6 million), A Man Called Pirate (Toho) WK4

An incredible display of discrepancy among the weekend % changes this week due to New Year falling over the weekend.

>Rogue One: A Star Wars Story returns to the top spot, unseating Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. After 3 weeks in release, the Star Wars spin-off is tracking ~56% behind The Force Awakens. And after 2 weeks in release, the final Resident Evil film is tracking just ~4% behind Retribution.

>Your Name. experiences its biggest weekend increase-to-date, and easily rose back into the Top 3 in its nineteenth week of release. If the estimate holds, its 19th weekend will be recorded as the biggest of all-time, besting Spirited Away's ¥255 million.

There is still plenty of New Year to take advantage of, and it's now "only" ¥3.5 billion and ¥4.2 billion away from overtaking Frozen and Titanic, respectively, to become the second-highest grossing film of all-time, behind only Spirited Away. However, its weekly numbers have been outpacing Spirited Away's now for a couple weeks, and it's probably going to stay that way, so I'm not ruling out the shot of it going on to become the highest-grossing film of all-time (especially if it can manage an Oscar nomination).

>Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them continues to show that spin-offs don't always have to be disappointments, as is the case with most in Japan, and is beginning to close in on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 - the lowest grossing film in the Harry Potter franchise.

Based on the previous post these are actuals rather than estimates, right? Just checking because we usually see actuals on Mondays.

They are estimates. Actuals will be posted on Monday as usual, unless New Year delays them a bit. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is considered a holiday, too (at least in Japan).

I just posted the Your Name. Weekly Chart prior to actuals this weekend because it's likely to outgross Frozen and Titanic now, setting up it and Shinkai's challenge to Spirited Away for the #1 all-time spot and beginning the post-Miyazaki era of the Japanese Box Office properly.

Got it, thanks. 43 minutes after midnight did seem rather fast to get the data!

Welcome. It's normal the fact that "Rogue One" is on top again. This week has been very sad for everybody who loves Star Wars. :(

Happy 2017 for everybody. I hope this year we will not leave so many stars. 2016 has been a very bad year.

Corpse, thanks for all your updates. Soon we will discover thanks to you important historical data of the imported films.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Yearly Data
You're welcome! And thanks to everyone who posted here in 2016; whether it was a single comment or a detailed discussion, you're keeping me interested in doing this daily/weekly with the ongoing activity here. I have no doubt, thanks to all the new members who have joined, that 2017 will be even greater!

2016's Yearly Data will be released later this month, but it's quite clear from the reports throughout the year and the continued strength of the box office this Fall/Winter, that 2016 will, almost undoubtedly, be the biggest year of all-time (beating 2010) and the most-attended year since at least 1974!

2016 will also be the fifth consecutive year that yearly admissions have increased, as clear a sign as any, along with so many various records being broken in recent years, that the box office has moved on from its stagnant state last decade.

Weekend Actuals have, indeed, been delayed due to New Year. I expect they'll be available tomorrow; Wednesday at the latest.

In the meantime, I'll post daily estimates this week in response to the New Year break (some impressive numbers on Monday).

Any US films that have a good shot at $50+ million in 2017?

Several.

Star Wars: Episode VIII
Beauty and the Beast
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Moana

All four of them are very likely, and depending on the exchange rate, $75-100 million+ is certainly doable for all four films.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a candidate as well, just not as assured. Japanese audiences should prefer the lighter tone the film seems to have, and the younger Peter Parker, and it helps that there's been some build up already with Civil War. Spider-Man's popularity is greater than pretty much all of Marvel's and DC's properties combined in Japan.

Coco is also another contender, but I wouldn't bet on it. Walt Disney Animation has overtaken Pixar Animation as the #1 imported film studio in recent years, and it'll probably get a Spring 2018 release in Japan anyway like nearly every other November Disney Animation/Pixar release.

All, also, happen to be Disney. :mer:

The holiday boost is quite something. Almost 300% up.

edit:
YN opened at 17th at France. In terms of attendance per screen though, it's at 7th.

Yep, that's New Year Week for you. Along with Golden Week (late April/early May) and Obon Festival (mid-August), New Year (first week of January) is one of the three strongest weeks at the box office every year.

The daily increases can easily exceed several hundred percent, even up to 500%+, during those three holiday periods.

And Your Name. is among the films receiving the biggest gains so far this week, and it needs them to lock up its path to surpassing Frozen and Titanic later this month (or early February).

The pace is awesome. Is it going to be like this all week? No wonder you are so certain about Your Name hitting 2nd place.

When will you think Your Name screening will end?
