Which films, do you think, will be nominated?

My line-up:

Rogue One
Fantastic Beasts
Doctor Strange
The Jungle Book
Passengers

I am pretty certain about the first four, but the fifth is up in the air. I could see Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children or even The Legend of Tarzan getting in instead.

Definitely The Jungle Book. I'll go with that as the winner too.

The Jungle Book has got this. It was all around well received, which will help.

The academy tends to vote for movies they like with special effects over what actually has the best fx.

So..

Arrival
passengers
Rogue One
Civil War
Jungle Book

whittled down to ten:

http://variety.com/2016/film/in-content ... 201944426/
Quote:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the shortlist for the visual effects race.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” and “Kubo and the Two Strings” were among the 10 films to advance, the Academy announced on Friday.

Here are the films (in alphabetical order) still in the running:

“Arrival”
“The BFG”
“Captain America: Civil War”
“Deepwater Horizon”
“Doctor Strange”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
“The Jungle Book”
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Passengers”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”

Members of the visual effects branch will watch 10-minute excerpts from each of the films on Jan. 7, then nominate five for final Oscar consideration. Nominations for the 2017 Oscars will be announced on Jan. 24.

Half of the titles are Disney: “The BFG,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Doctor Strange,” “The Jungle Book” and “Rogue One.”

Should “Kubo and the Two Strings” be nominated, it would be the first stop-motion title with that distinction since 1993’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Several of the titles have notable pedigrees such as “The BFG,” which was supervised by five-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri, and “Rogue One.” Last year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” nabbed a nomination for the team of Roger Guyett, Patrick Tubach, Neal Scanlan, and Chris Corbould.

Friday’s announcement of “Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” bodes well for Warner Bros., given that the eight “Potter” movies generated a total of only three VFX nominations. The team is headed by supervisors Tim Burke and Christian Manz.

Marvel-Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War” is the top box office performer on the list, having hauled in $1.2 billion. Supervisors Dan DeLeeuw and Russell Earl were also nominated for the previous installment, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

The initial list of 20 eligible film was announced on Dec. 2 and was narrowed by the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee to 10 for the bakeoff stage in a few weeks. The excluded films were “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Deadpool,”
“Independence Day: Resurgence,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “Suicide Squad,” “Sully,” “Warcraft” and “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

The 89th Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 26 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, and will be televised live on the ABC at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET.

based on this shortlist, the nominees will likely be:

arrival
doctor strange
fantastic beasts
the jungle book
rogue one

Kubo is a strange inclusion, no? Has a purely animated film ever made it onto the shortlist?

Trixster's prediction will probably come true.

I don't get why Civil War was included but BvS wasn't. But sure, whatever.

I hope Kubo makes it through, definitely deserving and a lot more work and creativity than in live action movies, It's easy to forget that these are puppets in hand-built sets so they are truly using effects to create say the flying and water sequences,

At least it's more fitting to Marvel slightly cartoony visual aesthetic.

I really like all these movies and wouldn't hate it if this was the line up. However, I really think the effects in Fantastic Beasts deserve a nom over Arrival and Passengers.

I think it will be Star Wars, Jungle Book, Arrival, and Beasts for sure. The fifth slot is unsure.
