Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updating
There are still some theaters that have yet to reopen following last week's earthquakes, so when I post the Usual Location's Saturday Seating/Showtimes listing later this evening, it'll represent more like ~60% of the market rather than the usual ~67%

Note: Some theaters are still closed due to last week's earthquakes, so this week's listing above represents ~60% of the overall market instead of the usual ~67%.We should be in store for another strong weekend, and this weekend's holds will be very important for every holdover. Golden Week begins next weekend, and with it comes many notable wide openers that will result in severe theater/screen cuts for most holdovers. > Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare will likely repeat atop the box office this weekend. It can experience the largest second weekend decline in the series, even up to 50%, and it's still probably going to come in first place due to its enormous opening last weekend. I doubt it'll see a significant decline, too, since its opening was very slightly deflated due to the quakes, and having exceeded 50% capacity last weekend anyway, there'll still be a lot of demand to see it this weekend. I expect a second weekend around ¥700-750 million ($6-7 million). > Zootopia is probably going to settle for a second place debut, unless it really, really breaks out, but that'd require an opening above Big Hero 6 and likely Frozen, too, if it's to challenge Conan; the latter being quite unlikely. Still, look for a strong opening weekend that could exceed ¥500 million ($4.5 million+), and with Golden Week coming up, great legs are sure to follow. >I haven't looked into how I Am a Hero or The Revenant may perform this weekend, but their counts aren't too impressive, or exciting. For now, I'd expect something around ¥200/250 million for both films this weekend. >Also, look for Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions to perform very well this weekend. I wouldn't be surprised by a Top 5, or the potential at a Top 3 (may require one or two films to disappoint), debut. It's actually opening on Friday, though, so some demand will be burned off, but its advance ticket sales from last December were huge, as are its current pre-sales for the weekend frame. >Sony is dumping The Fifth Wave, which honestly surprises me. Sony usually gives just about anything they distribute a reasonable release, even if they're destined to under-perform. I highly doubt this one will crack the Top 10.

I thought The Revenant would be a big release in Japan, it could have decent legs with Golden week ahead.

It's still going to do pretty well, certainly a $20 million+ contender. I don't think anything much higher was ever a real possibility since it didn't win Best Picture.
I'll post the Weekend Forecast shortly.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare's pre-sales for the day are way down compared to last weekend, but not unexpectedly considering how high it opened. Its morning/afternoon ticket sales are outpacing Zootopia's just slightly, but it's more likely to play better in the evening/night than it, so a second weekend atop the box office is looking pretty good.
>Zootopia is in store for a great debut, even if it may settle for second place. Its pre-sales are just a little behind Big Hero 6's, and Cinderella's (which opened this weekend last year), so it's likely to do over 400,000 admissions this weekend; resulting in a debut probably over ¥500 million. I'll keep an eye on how it compares to those two films as the day progresses.
Then from there, we have a very contested battle to see which films can make the Top 5.
>The Revenant, based on Friday's performance and today's pre-sales, should clear the ¥200 million mark this weekend, while I Am a Hero might as well, though it's looking like it could narrowly miss the mark.
>Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions didn't actually open on Friday as I mentioned yesterday (that was The Revenant), so its weekend isn't going to be deflated due to burned off demand. Its pre-sales are very strong; morning/afternoon ticket sales are also good; it's likely to play a successful hand this weekend. It's difficult to predict a figure here, though, considering its small screen count (135), and what's likely an unpredictable avg. ticket price. I think it'll make the Top 5.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Zootopia)
Apparently Zootopia is getting glowing reviews in Japan, any idea on the kind of multiplier we could be looking at ? Is A BH6 (~15) one possible ?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Zootopia)
Probably more like 10/11, which will still be exceptional. But we'll see. It'll have a huge Golden Week after next weekend, but April generally isn't a rewarding time to open animated films (Zootopia is the first non-Conan/Shin-chan film since at least 1998!) since the school year just began and May/June are weak months for the box office leading up to summer vacation in mid-July.
The good news is that it'll face little/no competition after the Golden Week openers next week, because as I said, May/June are weak months and few notable films open then.
Big Hero 6 had the benefit of New Year, which is usually a slightly better time of the year for legs, especially for family films. I also think its strong family theme with Tadashi/Hiro (this also helped Frozen greatly with Elsa/Anna) will resonate more with Japanese audiences than those found in Zootopia.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Zootopia)
Here are the admissions at the usual locations, as of 2pm (excluding Aeon Cinemas since they weren't included for Big Hero 6), for Disney's recent notable releases:
42,414 - Cinderella 39,822 - Big Hero 6 36,601 - Zootopia 30,140 - Inside Out
So far Zootopia is performing inline with expectations, and I doubt it changes course. It'll trail Cinderella and Big Hero 6 for the day by 10-15%, but it might have a Sunday that's on par with both films (especially Cinderella since it had a surprisingly weak Sunday last year) to end up with a similar weekend opening (~400,000-450,000 admissions; ¥500-600 million gross).
Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare is leading Zootopia by ~20% so far today, and that figure will probably increase closer to ~30% once the evening/night showings begin, so it's almost assured a second weekend at #1.

Note: There are still some theaters throughout southern Japan that have yet to reopen following last week's earthquakes, so some of these drops are slightly higher (1/2%) than usual.
>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare retains its position atop the box office, though it's down a significant 50+%. A large drop like this shouldn't be too unexpected considering its enormous opening weekend, but it does seem likely to experience the biggest second weekend decline in the franchise (currently -42%) even if Sunday comes in strong. It's aiming for a second weekend of ¥600-650 million with 450,000-500,000 admissions.
>Zootopia opens in second place, but delivers a good second place start. Compared to recent Disney films, it's first day is 26% behind Cinderella, 19% behind Big Hero 6, but 22% ahead of Inside Out.
It didn't play as well into the evening as those comparisons, so it's likely skewing toward a younger audience than all three of them. This means it should have a strong Sunday, but even then, it might narrowly miss the ¥500 million mark and come in just under 400,000 admissions over the weekend. If it does miss those marks, it's not too alarming; it'd still be a good opening and legs should carry it to ¥4-5 billion ($40-50 million).
>I Am a Hero managed to overtake The Revenant once the evening/night showings began, and has set itself up to possibly open above it this weekend. I expect this one to see a decline tomorrow, though, so I don't know if it's assured a opening above ¥200 million just yet. However, it does carry a R15+ rating, so its avg. ticket price will be above average.
>The Revenant also didn't play too well in the evening, suggesting it's skewing toward an older audience (seniors). Whether or not it reaches ¥200 million over the weekend will depend on its Sunday performance and just how old it's skewing; if it's too old, then its avg. ticket price will be too low to get it there.
>Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions has a solid first day, but it only reached 28% capacity for the day; normally these type of films have a higher capacity rate. It's very unlikely to reach the ¥200 million mark now, but it could still manage a ¥150 million opening, which would still be pretty good given the low screen count.
>I've Always Liked You: Confession Executive Committee performed well (hitting 40% capacity), and despite its limited release, it just might be able to crack the Top 10 due to the sizable declines of some of last weekend's Top 10 films.

The Dark Side of Dimensions (Toei) NEW 07 (03) ¥81,000,000 ($725,000), -45%, ¥3,250,000,000 ($29.1 million), Assassination Classroom: Graduation (Toho) WK5 08 (07) ¥53,000,000 ($470,000), -20%, ¥1,330,000,000 ($12.2 million), Chihayafuru - Part 1 (Toho) WK6 09 (--) ¥45,000,000 ($405,000), 0, ¥45,000,000 ($405,000), I've Always Liked You: Confession Executive Committee (Aniplex) NEW 10 (06) ¥34,000,000 ($305,000), -56%, ¥3,925,000,000 ($35.1 million), Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan (Toho) WK8
>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare earns a second weekend atop the box office, and looks to have avoided a 50% decline. It's still likely to have the largest second weekend drop in the franchise, but considering how much higher it opened, that's hardly an issue since the second weekend here is easily the biggest second weekend in the series as well. Now let's see if it has the staying power to hold off next weekend's Golden Week openers (primarily Civil War and Terra Formars) to remain at #1 for four/five-consecutive weeks.
The 20th installment in the series is still well on its way to exceeding the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, and could eventually earn ¥6 billion ($55 million).
>Zootopia ends up settling for second place, and while it does miss the ¥500 mark, a weekend around ¥450 million or so is still pretty impressive. And it's worth mentioning that before Frozen and Big Hero 6 came along (more exceptions than comparisons), it would have been the highest debut for a Walt Disney Animation film. So keep that in mind.
The film is likely to have strong legs, though this lower opening does make it more vulnerable to bigger screen/theater cuts against next weekend's Golden Week openers, which could stunt the legs a bit. Still, worse cast scenario should still allow it to reach ¥4 billion ($35 million), and the chances of achieving the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone are fair.
>I Am a Hero, directed by Shinsuke Sato, sees itself having a reasonably solid debut, especially since it's a R15+ release (uncommon in the market). It might have exceeded the ¥200 million mark over the weekend, but I'll be a little conservative for now in case it does miss the target. Mark this down as another ¥1 billion+ ($10 million) earner for Toho this year.
>The Revenant... kind of disappoints. It didn't come to the market with the Best Picture win, which would have really helped it, but it still won enough Oscars (namely Actor) to have performed better than this. DiCaprio is a draw in the market, but this debut is below the majority of most of his work in the past decade. I'll wait for actuals before digging to find out where it ranks amongst his previous films, though it's pretty low. I imagine legs, while unlikely to be great, will still be strong enough to give it potential of reaching the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone.
>Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions comes in lower than its impressive pre-sales were suggesting, but perhaps those pre-sales made up the overwhelming majority of its actual ticket sales. Its estimated admissions would normally have it right on the cusp of a ¥100 million opening, but its avg. ticket price should be high enough to push it above the mark.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (04/23-24)
(C)2016 青山剛昌/名探偵コナン製作委員会Weekend Actuals (04/23-24)/2016年04月23日-2016年04月24日01 (01) ¥679,206,300 ($6.1 million), -44%, ¥2,525,508,100 ($22.9 million), Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (Toho) WK2 02 (--) ¥445,804,900 ($4.0 million), 0, ¥445,804,900 ($4.0 million), Zootopia (Disney) NEW 03 (02) ¥238,408,100 ($2.1 million), -40%, ¥724,343,500 ($6.6 million), Crayon Shin-chan: Assault on the Dreaming World (Toho) WK2 04 (--) ¥225,688,700 ($2.0 million), 0, ¥225,688,700 ($2.0 million), I Am a Hero (Toho) NEW 05 (--) ¥179,553,100 ($1.6 million), 0, ¥239,802,800 ($2.1 million), The Revenant (Fox) NEW 06 (--) ¥133,010,600 ($1.2 million), 0, ¥133,010,600 ($1.2 million), Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions (Toei) NEW 07 (03) ¥76,057,900 ($684,000), -47%, ¥3,233,976,400 ($29.0 million), Assassination Classroom: Graduation (Toho) WK5 08 (--) ¥70,507,400 ($634,000), 0, ¥70,507,400 ($634,000), I've Always Liked You: Confession Executive Committee (Aniplex) NEW 09 (07) ¥55,800,800 ($502,000), -17%, ¥1,354,156,700 ($12.4 million), Chihayafuru - Part 1 (Toho) WK6 10 (06) ¥35,640,400 ($320,000), -48%, ¥210,021,200 ($1.9 million), Spotlight (Long Ride) WK2
>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare claims its second-consecutive week atop the box office, and did so pretty easily despite competition from a major Disney release. The 20th installment in the popular franchise sold an excellent 522,023 admissions in its second weekend, bringing its two-week admissions above 1.9 million.
This is by far the biggest second weekend in the series (it's actually higher than all but two of its predecessor's opening weekends!), and it's now outpacing last year's film by a stunning 39%. If it continues along this path, it'll end up exceeding ¥6 billion ($55 million) with over 4.5 million admissions. Needless to say, far and away a new franchise record and potential Top 5 film of 2016.
>Zootopia comes in second place, and while Disney's latest enjoyed a healthy debut, it came in at a fairly distant second, selling 329,513 admissions across 471 screens over the weekend. In comparison, this debut is 42% below Frozen and 26% below Big Hero 6.
The opening itself is only "good", not great, and while it's also unlikely to achieve the legs of either of its studio predecessors, it should still be able to reach the ¥4 billion ($35 million) mark with a slight chance at ¥5 billion ($45 million) as well. This range is the standard range for a Pixar release, and very strong for an imported animated film in general, so Walt Disney Animation does appear to be becoming a bankable brand name at the box office in Japan after all these years.
>I Am a Hero, directed by Shinsuke Sato (Gantz; Library Wars), comes in third place, selling solid 159,964 admissions on 284 screens over the weekend; and thanks to the high avg. ticket price due to its R15+ rating, also comfortably exceeded ¥200 million over the weekend. That number is important because it almost always guarantees a film will exceed the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) success milestone.
>The Revenant settles for fourth place, but came in lower than expected. Playing on 366 screens, DiCaprio's latest sold 132,848 admissions over the weekend frame, bringing its admissions since Friday up to 181,106. DiCaprio is a very consistent draw in Japan, often guaranteeing openings above ¥300 million, but that clearly wasn't the cast with this film, which is particularly odd considering he finally won an Oscar for his role here. However, the opening is decent enough and should allow it to exceed the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone.
>Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions misses the Top 5, though still enjoyed a successful debut as it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The fourth film in the franchise, the first in 6 years, sold 92,396 admissions on only 137 screens over the weekend.
>I've Always Liked You: Confession Executive Committee comes in WAY above estimates, earning itself an impressive 8th place debut on only 81 screens. The anime film, adapting one of HoneyWorks' Vocaloid song project's sold 50,528 admissions over the weekend.
>Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice experienced a whopping 65% decline in its fifth weekend and dropped out of the Top 10 thanks to 3D/IMAX cuts. So now, its hopes of outgrossing The Dark Knight Rises to become DC's highest-grossing modern film in the market are all but gone, though it'll still claim the second place spot on that list.
>Also falling out of the Top 10 was Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan in its eighth weekend, but now without becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in the process! The 36th installment in the franchise exceeded ¥3.93 billion over the weekend, and will eventually crawl over the ¥4 billion milestone in a couple weeks.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updating
Golden Week (04/29-05/06), one of Japan's three busiest weeks at the box office, begins this weekend and with it comes three major wide releases, along with a couple other smaller wide openers (and numerous limited openers).
After briefly checking Friday's screen arrangement across about a dozen locations, here's how the largest screens and number of showtimes are being allocated for Friday:
01. Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (Toho) WK3 02. Captain America: Civil War (Disney) NEW 03. Zootopia (Disney) WK2 04. Terra Formars (Warner Bros.) NEW 05. Chihayafuru - Part 2 (Toho) NEW
So far, I haven't come across a single location that is bumping Detective Conan from their largest screens, and it still has a lot of showtimes going into its third weekend despite so much competition. Does that mean it'll repeat atop the box office for a third-consecutive weekend? I'm leaning towards it actually doing just that, but it's too early to say at the moment.
I'll have a full Golden Week preview posted tomorrow evening.

Golden Week is upon us (04/29-05/06), so let's see how this year's slate can perform over one of Japan's busiest three weeks of the year.
>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare continues its big advantage in terms of seating due to its breakout performance as it heads into its third weekend, occupying the largest screens and with ample showtimes. Can it stay atop the box office for a third consecutive weekend as a result? Most likely, yes, it'll once again claim the top spot over the weekend with ¥500-600 million, but two Disney films will prove to be stiff competition.
>Zootopia had a somewhat soft opening last weekend, though still impressive, but it has maintained a very healthy amount of seating/showtimes in its second weekend despite so many new openers. It should be able to experience either a minimal drop this weekend, or could possibly see a small increase as well, as it attempts to hold onto its second place position against a host of superheroes.
>Captain America: Civil War might be being handled as another Avengers film in most other markets (and may perform as such), but theater owners I believe realized that it's unlikely to perform as well as the Avengers if its seating/showtimes are any indication. If Spider-Man, and to a much lesser-extent, Iron Man, aren't the primary characters, then superhero films generally underperform in Japan.
However, by including so many other superheros, including those I mentioned, it's still likely to outperform any non-Spider-Man/Avengers film, but I don't see it reaching #1 and predict a close battle with Zootopia for second place this weekend with both films perhaps earning ¥400 million+.
>Terra Formars appears, based on seating/showtimes and early ticket sales (which aren't too far behind Civil War at the moment), to be settling for fourth place this weekend, but it's still shaping up for a nice opening. I haven't checked to see how it's performing at too many locations yet, though it looks like it could do ¥300 million or so over the weekend.
Also, it's worth mentioning, that to capitalize on potential foreign moviegoers (fans of the manga and anime) who will be in Japan this Golden Week, Warner Bros. has provided select screenings of the film with English subtitles.
>Chihayafuru - Part 2 is a tricky one to predict. The second half of a film almost always decreases on opening weekend and in total compared to the first half, but Part 1 in this instance had a very soft opening and has since enjoyed great legs. I wouldn't rule out an opening above Part 1 (¥179 million), and ¥200 million+ might be attainable.
Overall, while this year's Golden Week is looking strong, even if the weekend openers themselves aren't blockbuster material.
I'll provide regular updates, almost daily, during this year's Golden Week. The strongest days of this year's Golden Week will be today (Friday), Sunday, and then Tuesday through Thursday, so my coverage will be most frequent on those days.

Usual Locations (Real-Time Ticket Sales) - Friday Admissions [Golden Week - Showa Day]
10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 2PM > 5PM > 7PM > 10PM > FINAL
18,074 - Captain America: Civil War (NEW) 16,411 - Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (WK3) 14,207 - Zootopia (WK2) 7,703 - Crayon Shin-chan: Assault on the Dreaming World (WK3) 6,583 - Chihayafuru - Part 2 (NEW) 6,290 - Terra Formars (NEW) 2,054 - The Revenant (WK2) 1,596 - Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan (WK9) 1,487 - Chihayafuru - Part 1 (WK7) 1,275 - Scanner (NEW)
Great start for Civil War with the initial ticket sales for the day, and also strong numbers so far for everything else as well. If Captain America isn't skewing too young, then this initial number is very encouraging. Detective Conan has been playing stronger in the afternoon and evening versus the morning, so let's see if it can take back the lead as the day progresses.
Things to watch: Family films, like Crayon Shin-chan and Doraemon will slow down in the evening, while more teen/adult driven films such as Detective Conan, Terra Formars, and Chihayafuru will pick up more business into the afternoon/evening.

Zootopia has pulled ahead while Civil War slips to third. This is probably going to be a seesaw battle between the Top 3 films over the next several hours.

Now this is a close race for the #1 spot; only 1,632 admissions separating the Top 3 as of noon.

Zootopia has pulled away a bit now and is performing spectacularly. However, both Detective Conan and Captain America will play better in the evening/night than it, so it's still too early to say which film will win the first day of Golden Week.
