Yeah, fairly poor opening in terms of admissions.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens appears to have ended its run over the past weekend, as it's not listed in any theaters beginning this week. I'll post a recap of where its total ranks among the other Star Wars films; Walt Disney films; and on the all-time charts tonight.

No exciting openers this week since it's the post Spring Break weekend. Suspicious Woman is the only wide opener, though it's unlikely to debut in the Top 5.

The post-Spring Break weekend, like every other post-holiday weekend, is a dead weekend.

The only wide opener is Suspicious Woman, and its pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales are expectedly awful. It doesn't have any chance of making a run at the Top 5, and will likely barely settle for a Top 10 debut.

Also, it's definitely worth noting that the final Love Live! performance from the Tokyo Dome, titled μ's Final Love Live! Forever, is being broadcast in theaters on Saturday. It's a 2-day event, which began yesterday, and its admissions from yesterday appeared to be high enough to propel it into the Top 5 for the day.

So even though it only has Saturday, that day alone could very well be enough to earn it a Top 10 position for the weekend. In fact, I'd be surprised if it doesn't make the Top 10. Ticket prices are likely absurdly high, too, so it wouldn't even need the necessary admissions to pull of a Top 10 debut, either.

I don't have much time to type a write-up, but Saturday's admissions were pretty much as expected.

>Significant drop for Assassination Classroom 2, though expected given it was boosted by stage greetings last Saturday. I don't think it'll fall over 50% over the weekend frame itself, however, since it should hold better Sunday-to-Sunday.

>Batman vs. Superman also experiences a hefty drop, but nothing unusual for a superhero film; they tend to be pretty frontloaded regardless of reception. It should hold a bit better Sunday-to-Sunday, too, though, so the weekend drop shouldn't be closer to 40% than 50%. Although, it seems possible that it could slip to third place in its second weekend since Doraemon is holding very, very well.

>Love Live! performed very well, and while it's a Saturday only broadcast, those admissions may be enough to allow it to debut in the Top 10, especially when you have to consider ticket prices were likely absurd.

Technically, the number here isn't a "Live" Broadcast, as the concert occurred over the days of Thursday March 31 and Friday April 1. The numbers are for the "Encore" Broadcast of Day 2 (April 1), which is likely for the fans who did not have time to watch Day 2, due to work obligations or other such reasons.

I wouldn't expect many of the people who watched the Live Broadcast of Day 2 would also watch the Encore Broadcast, because it ran for over 5 hours (I watched the live broadcast of Day 2 in Sydney Australia). Only the hardcore fans would probably go, but then again they could just wait for the BD/DVD to come out later this year.

Yes, the tickets are more expensive than movie tickets at 3,800 yen for the "Encore Broadcast", but watching it live at Tokyo Dome was even more expensive.

Thanks for the clarification. For all things Love Live! in the future, I'll refer to you first. :mer:

I was caught up this weekend, so was unable to provide any updates beyond Saturday. However, actuals were mostly inline with Friday's forecast, and I'll be posting the weekend actuals pretty soon.

>Assassination Classroom: Graduation goes unchallenged for the top position, claiming its second week atop the charts. The final film in the series held just as well as its predecessor, surprisingly enough, selling 335,418 admissions over its second weekend frame.

The conclusion film in the popular Assassination Classroom series has already exceeded two million admissions after only ten days in release, and is now outpacing its predecessor by 76%. That percentage should shrink a bit since the original film was released one week earlier, thus didn't receive as much of a boost from Spring Break, but this final film is still well on track for possibly ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+), if not ¥4 billion ($35 million+) with over three million admissions.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan rises one spot to claim second place in its fifth weekend of release, delivering an excellent hold. The 36th installment in the most-attended film franchise sold an additional 198,103 admissions over the weekend, bringing its five-week total admissions just shy of three million with 2,985,122.

The remake of the 1989 original continues to post great numbers (very similar to last year's film), and should eventually finish quite close to the ¥4 billion ($35 million) mark with nearly 3.5 million admissions.

>Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice fell to third place thanks to its expected rough second weekend drop, as nearly every superhero film experiences, selling 136,402 admissions.

After ten days in release, DC's most popular heroes have managed to sell over 700,000 admissions. In terms of admissions, the film is performing quite poorly, but thanks to healthy 3D and other premium shares, its gross is pretty good. Unless it fails to stabilize, even if only just slightly, there's still a good chance it'll outgross The Dark Knight Rises to become the highest-grossing film based on a DC property in the market, though only just with about ¥2 billion ($17/18 million).

>The Town Where Only I Am Missing exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone in its third week of release, adding itself among the ever growing list of successful domestic films released by Warner Bros.. Since 2012, Warner Bros. has found more success in Japan by distributing domestic pictures versus their own releases.

>Suspicious Woman bombs, as expected, only coming in ninth place in its debut weekend. Mizuta Nobuo's remake of the hit Korean film only sold 47,827 admissions across 280 screens.

>Just outside the Top 10 this week, Yoji Yamada's latest, What a Wonderful Family, exceeded the ¥1 billion ($9 million) milestone after four weeks in release.

Hi Corpse! I was wondering how Zootopia will play out during Golden Week. How do animated films usually perform during Golden Week? Should we see an increase from their debut, a minimal drop, or something totally different? Thanks!

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updating
Golden Week isn't known for animated releases, except for the annual Detective Conan and Crayon Shin-chan films (speaking of which, expect a monster debut for this year's Detective Conan in two weeks).

In fact, no other animated film has ever opened the week prior or during Golden Week since at least 1998. And the only non-Conan/Shin-chan animated film to play (in the Top 10) over Golden Week were Frozen and Monsters, Inc. due to their strong legs keeping them playing well past their March release.

So, there aren't any animated films to look back on to project how Zootopia may perform over the holiday period. However, I'm quite certain it's going to post impressive numbers with so much going for it. I expect a good but not amazing debut, followed by a huge second/third week/weekend. And I wouldn't be surprised by a second weekend increase since it's the weekend after the first day of Golden Week.

Another dead week for openers (none are wide releases) as it's the week after Spring Break and two weekends before Golden Week; meaning it's a poor frame to open anything important.

The post-Spring Break weekend (the second weekend of April) is well-known for poor holds for most films, especially those targeting kids/teens, although the films attracting an older/adult audience can sometimes hold on well-enough post the holiday period.

>Assassination Classroom: Graduation is likely to repeat atop the box office for a third-consecutive weekend; Batman vs Superman may have the best weekend hold (it's skewing strongly towards the adult crowd); Doraemon will begin to fade as it does every year at this time; and remaining holdovers will be making what little they can before the onslaught of mid/late April releases arrive in time for Golden Week in three weeks.

>Room is a darkhorse this weekend, and could see a debut around the bottom of the Top 10. Its pre-sales are decent, and with Brie Larson having won Best Actress for the film, it has generated some interest before opening.

Everything performed as expected on Saturday. The kid/teen films experienced large drop-offs since they benefited most from Spring Break, and the more adult driven films mostly behaved like they would on any ordinary weekend.

Room opens quite well, but it's important to remember that it's a limited release and 71% of its theater count is represented above. However, I believe it has the admissions to bump The Summit of the Gods out of the Top 10, earning itself a Top 10 debut in the process.

I'll post the weekend estimates later. Everything mostly performed as expected; the kid/family films saw large declines due to Spring Break being over, while the more adult films experienced standard weekend holds.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (04/09-10)
Before I post this weekend's actuals, I noticed that the estimated USD totals for Chihayafuru - Part 1 and The Town Where Only I Am Missing were off somehow. It seems I added roughly $1 million more to each film's total. Not sure how that happens, but they'll be corrected in the next post.

There's also, quite remarkably, a tie for seventh place this weekend. There may have been a tie at some point in the past, but certainly not since I've been tracking the box office.
