Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updated
Probably not. It has about ¥300 million ($2.5 million) or so left in its run, and that's if it can keep a decent number of theaters/screens over the next three weeks.

Over the course of the next three weeks, ten new wide releases open to take advantage of the upcoming Spring Break period. And of those ten, seven are major releases: The Good Dinosaur (03/12), Summit of the Gods (03/12), What A Wonderful Family (03/12), Chihayafuru - Part 1 (03/19), Assassination Classroom 2: Graduation (03/25), Kamen Rider 1 (03/26), and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (03/26).

Competition for all the holdovers, except for Doraemon (since March is its month), is very fierce and plentiful this March, so they're in store for major theater/screen losses. Last March, Assassination Classroom spoiled Doraemon's attempt at ruling the month with four-consecutive weeks atop the box office, and the sequel is likely to do the same at the end of the month.

There are many wide releases coming out over the next few weeks, so The Force Awaken's time in the Top 10 is coming to a close shortly. But before that happens, it will achieve at least one more consecutive week in the Top 10 (its thirteenth), and it has a slight chance of making the Top 10 again in its fourteenth week. If the fourteenth weekend does happen, it'll be the last.

Corpse wrote:

Damn shame its just $6m away from $100m total. Still a REALLY good total from Japan. After Japan's run I think its OS run will mostly end.

A very good weekend should be coming up this week; probably the strongest weekend of the year so far with two weeks before the Spring Break holiday begins.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan maintains its #1 position in terms of seating, and will likely earn itself a second-consecutive week atop the box office as well. Doraemon films usually fall 25/30% in their second weekends, so look for a second weekend of ¥450 million ($4 million) or so.

>The Good Dinosaur has been given the expected very wide release, as to be expected from a major Disney and Pixar film, but this one appears to be less anticipated than it should be before the upcoming Spring Break holiday.

I expect a disappointment for Disney/Pixar here. It's very unlikely to perform as badly as Brave did, that'd be nearly impossible considering it flatout bombed, but I'm confident in predicting it'll probably to come in under, possibly, every other Pixar film (except for Cars, perhaps). I'm currently thinking a debut of ¥300-350 million ($2.5-3.0 million) or so.

>The Summit of the Gods has a lot of positives going for it that would suggest a good opening, but so far, it's not looking particularly strong. It may pick up steam as the weekend draws closer, or during the weekend itself, but currently I'm seeing a debut of ¥200-250 million ($2 million) at best.

>What a Wonderful Family is the latest from renown director, Yoji Yamada, who continues to this day to release one or two films almost every year. His films almost always perform within a similar, solid range, so I don't see this one diverging from the norm, or a debut somewhere around ¥200 million ($1.7/1.8 million).

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan claiming a a second-consecutive week atop the box office is pretty much assured this weekend, as its Saturday pre-sales are nearly 70% ahead of those of The Good Dinosaur's (and up 1% over last year's film). Doraemon typically rules the month of March in many years past, and so far that's going to continue to be the case once again.

>The Good Dinosaur is looking to underwhelm in Japan. Its pre-sales and Saturday morning/afternoon ticket sales are decent, but far behind where they should be at this point. If its 3D share is healthy, as is the norm for Disney releases, it should be able to reach ¥300 million, but even that is just "okay" and below the average for a Pixar film.

And for those who may be wondering; a debut of this level would make it Pixar's second weakest opening in the market (only ahead of Brave), and with a projected total between ¥2-2.5 billion (~$20 million), it'd rank among Pixar's lowest grossing films (only ahead of Brave and A Bug's Life, and maybe Cars).

>The Summit of the Gods wasn't looking too good yesterday, but it has picked up quite a bit, especially the morning/early-afternoon pre-sales. This is a strong indicator that it's skewing toward a senior audience. Its overall pre-sales aren't too far behind The Good Dinosaur's for the day, so we may have a race for second place this weekend.

>What a Wonderful Family appears to be performing as expected for a Yoji Yamada film.

>And finally, Digimon Adventure tri. Chapter 2 is only playing on 10 screens, but its pre-sales alone have already sold more than 50% of its available admissions. Like Chapter 1, it's going to perform extremely well in such a limited release, but unlike Chapter 1, it has a better shot at making the Top 10 since that position doesn't require as high of a gross this time around.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan will hold onto its weekend crown, largely unchallenged by the new openers.

>The Good Dinosaur disappoints, but not unexpectedly so after seeing its pre-sales and yesterday's morning ticket sales. Its Saturday trailed Inside Out's by about 35%, so unless it has a very, very strong Sunday, it's unlikely to even reach ¥300 million ($2.5 million) this weekend, making it Pixar's second-worst opening in the market (only ahead of Brave).

>The Summit of the Gods ended up settling for a solid third place for the day, and as long as it doesn't drop tomorrow, it should break ¥200 million in its debut weekend.

>What a Wonderful Family continues perform in-line with expectations, though it's probably going to come in under ¥200 million. Yoji Yamada's films generally have excellent legs, so the opening weekend is relatively unimportant here.

>Digimon Adventure tri. Chapter 2 sold through 67% of its available admissions for the day, managing to outpace the first film in ticket sales (but not in ticket sale-through). It's only playing on 10 screens (8 accounted for above), but it's looking likely to make the Top 10 this weekend.

>PriPara appears to be doing well, but a whopping 94% of its theater count is represented for at the usual locations. So with only 6 theaters unaccounted for, it's not adding much to its admissions. It's very unlikely to make the Top 10.

>Ultraman X the Movie: Here Comes! Our Ultraman comfortably beat last year's film, by 40%, though it's also unlikely to make the Top 10. 84% of its theater count is represented here, so it also won't be adding too much to its admissions.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while ranking twelfth for the day, is still likely to make the Top 10 since PriPara and Ultraman are having the overwhelming amount of their tickets sold at the usual locations.

>Mad Max: Fury Road is still hanging on well after being expanded last week due to its Oscar dominance. This is its 35th week of release.

I'll post the Weekend Actuals shortly. I didn't have an opportunity to really provide any updates over the weekend, though the numbers mostly fell inline with the forecast.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan holds onto its #1 position, and boy did it do so in spectacular fashion.

The 36th installment in the most-attended movie franchise in Japan delivered the second best second weekend in the series, selling 415,173 admissions in its second frame, more than doubling the tickets sold (and money earned) of its closest competitor. And after just nine days in release, everyone's favorite blue cat has already exceeded 1 million admissions.

Also, with this huge victory, Doraemon is very likely to repeat atop the box office again next weekend, and maybe, just maybe, is on track to become the first film in the franchise to ever exceed ¥4 billion (~$35 million). Either way, another year, another major success for Toho and the Doraemon franchise.

>The Good Dinosaur had to settle for second place, which is fine, though it comes in well-below the norm of the typical Disney/Pixar release. Pixar's sixteenth adventure only managed to sell 191,696 admissions over the weekend across 380 screens, making it the second-lowest debut in Pixar's film history (behind only Brave).

This is quite the disappointing debut, and not far away from bomb territory in terms of expectations. Spring Break does tend to deliver strong legs for most films each year, but even so, great legs are still unlikely to carry The Good Dinosaur to even a ¥2 billion ($17/18 million) finish. However, there is some "good news". According to BOM, Japan has potential to become the film's second strongest overseas market (The UK looks out-of-reach, but surpassing France is possible).

>The Summit of the Gods, starring Hiroshi Abe, debuts in third place, selling a fair 165,220 admissions on 322 screens. Not bad, and the somewhat low avg. ticket price and strong Monday performance is evidence that it's skewing older, so legs are probably going to be good as a result. It's a lock to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone, but Toho will be wanting this one to come in as close to or above ¥1.5 billion (~$13 million).

>What a Wonderful Family, renowned director Yoji Yamada's 84th theatrical release, only comes in fourth place in its debut, though its opening is on par with most of Yamada's recent works. Across 320 screens, the family themed film sold 151,422 admissions over the weekend.

Yamada films always manage good/strong legs, and with solid reviews, this one shouldn't be any different - aiming for a total between ¥1-1.5 billion ($9-13 million).

>PriPara Everyone's Longing Let's Go PriPari makes for a surprising Top 10 debut, and with Girls und Panzer holding extraordinarily well once again, together they managed to bump Star Wars: The Force Awakens out of the Top 10. PriPara debuted on 116 screens, selling 37,082 admissions over the weekend.

Chihayafuru - Part 1, the live-action adaptation of Yuki Suetsugu's manga series, is aiming to dethrone Doraemon from the top spot and it just might be capable of taking up the challenge. A little over 25% of its Saturday showings are stage greeting events, so its weekend will have some degree of inflation; and this genre usually does well prior to the Spring Break holiday and has been on fire for the past year. However, it'll have to out-open every other josei/shojo film this decade to pull off the upset victory - a difficult task.

Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan will have an excellent hold so it's still the likely favorite to win the weekend; its third-consecutive if it does so.

The Town Where Only I Am Missing should perform somewhat well for Warner Bros., earning them yet another successful local release in the market. It has zero chance of making a play at the top spot, but it should have a reasonable third place debut since The Good Dinosaur looks unlikely to develop strong legs.

Just realized that SW7 fell out of Top 10.

BTW Corpse when is Zootopia releasing in Japan? What do you expect it will do?

April 23rd. It's a difficult film to gauge. The excellent reviews and the huge success it has become overseas will generate interest; and the release date being just before the Golden Week holiday period is a notable advantage as well. It has a lot going for it already.

It won't disappoint, that's pretty certain. Before Frozen, Walt Disney Animation films weren't ever big hits in the market. Big Hero 6 then performed extraordinarily well, but it benefited from the goodwill of Frozen and by having Japanese characters, settings, and such, too.

If they keep releasing quality films, I imagine they'll eventually find a consistent audience and stabilize around ¥4 billion (the standard for a Pixar film). That's the initial figure Zootopia will want to target or exceed. And if it's lucky, perhaps it can achieve blockbuster status by earning over ¥5 billion (currently ~$45 million).

>Doraemon is very likely to maintain its #1 position; achieving its third-consecutive week atop the box office. Its pre-sales are outpacing all the openers quite comfortably, and its morning/afternoon ticket sales are looking good once again.

>Chihayafuru - Part 1 doesn't appear to be faring too well at the moment. Its pre-sales are somewhat mediocre, as are its morning/afternoon ticket sales. However, it's likely to pick up in the evening and should play well on Sunday, so the early ticket sales could be a bit deceiving. I don't really see it opening much higher than ¥200 million, though, so it won't be a threat to Doraemon.

>The Town Where Only I Am Missing is performing as expected thus far, so a debut around ¥150 million remains the goal. As long as it opens very close to that number, or exceeds it, it shouldn't have any trouble eventually reaching the ¥1 billion milestone with the benefit of Spring Break.

>Precure All Stars: Sung by Everyone♪ Miracle Magic! should debut with a similar result as the past few films in the series. This franchise has dropped off from its peak two/three years ago, and has settled with consistent opening weekends ever since.

As for the holdovers, pre-sales are noticeably down compared to last week. This is the weekend before Spring Break and it is known for poor holds (as most pre-holiday weekends are), so it wouldn't be surprising to see some 40% declines. Sunday, however, is likely to be much stronger than last week, so we'll see if it's able to counter what's shaping up to be a rough Saturday.

This weekend is also serving as the calm before the storm for next weekend.

Assassination Classroom 2: Graduation opens next week, and it already has many sold out showings or those approaching max capacity a week in advance. The manga and anime are both concluding this Spring, too, and interest and hype are very high for this film since it'll also feature a conclusion.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan has no problem fending off another group of openers once again, and has set itself up to deliver an excellent third-consecutive week atop the box office of perhaps another ¥400 million.

>The Town Where Only I Am Missing overtook Chihayafuru - Part 1 into the evening, and might be able to manage a second place debut this weekend. The latter should have a strong Sunday, if it follows past films in the genre, so I'd still give it the slight edge of coming in second place. Either way, a very close race to see which one earns silver this weekend; both targeting a ¥200 million opening.

>The Good Dinosaur held better than yesterday's pre-sales and early ticket sales were suggesting, but it's opening weekend was so disappointing, that it's hard to find a good -20/25% second weekend decline as impressive.

>Precure All Stars: Sung by Everyone♪ Miracle Magic! mirrored last Spring's release, up a single percent at the usual locations above.

>The Danish Girl had an encouraging start. It reached 21% capacity at the locations above, which is pretty good. It'll fall shy of the Top 10 since it's a limited release (and 78% of its locations are represented for above), but it's on target for a solid debut of ¥25-30 million ($225,000-$275,000) on 67 screens.

A strong Sunday with nearly everything increasing, especially kid/family films, has resulted in the overall weekend looking quite good; especially for a pre-holiday weekend. Nothing in the Top 10, or near the Top 10, looks in danger of dropping 40%.

I don't have time to post a write-up, but I'll have the Weekend Estimates up later this evening.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan secures a third-consecutive week atop the box office with possibly another weekend above ¥400 million based on estimates; if accurate, it will achieve the highest-third weekend in the series. Its three week total is also outpacing last year's film by about 3%, based on estimates, and if that's true (or improved upon) tomorrow, it may end up becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise as well. Its biggest week, Spring Break, is still ahead, too.

>The Town Where Only I Am Missing appears to have achieved a second place debut, though it and The Good Dinosaur (thanks to a great second weekend hold) are very close based on estimates. It's possible they'll share second place victories; one coming out on top in gross, while the other ends up with more admissions. Either way, second or third place, it's a solid start and another domestic success for Warner Bros. in the market.

>Chihayafuru - Part 1 comes in with a rather disappointing debut. Unless its avg. ticket price comes in unusually high, very doubtful, it failed to open to ¥200 million. Legs will be good enough to allow for a ¥1 billion+ total, but this should have performed better.

>Precure All Stars: Sung by Everyone♪ Miracle Magic! sold nearly the same number of tickets at the usual locations as last Spring's release (less than 2,000 admission difference), but edged it out by a 2% margin. The series continues to be down quite a bit from its peak a few years ago, though it's been very consistent in the past year.
