All three films have IMAX and MX4D screens.

And speaking of The Finest Hours, Casey Sherman (the author of the novel), liked my tweet earlier this evening, thanking me for tweeting about the film's "success" in the market. I wasn't expecting that.

>The Black Devil and the White Prince sells the most admissions at the usual locations, as I expected from it thanks to numerous stage greeting events, however, it's unlikely to have beaten The Martian for the weekend crown (especially in terms of gross).

That's because 86% of its theater count is accounted for above, so ~125,000 admissions is about as high as it could go with the remaining 22 theaters (14%) included. And The Martian should come in around 140,000 admissions given its numbers at the usual locations. Still, this ended up closer than I was expecting, and almost managed to snap The Martian's reign atop the box office.

>The Finest Hours started the weekend off decently (it was only trailing The Martian by a small margin in the morning hours), but slowed down into the evening/night on both Saturday and Sunday indicating it's skewing somewhat toward an older audience.

This is good news since its weekday business should be lucrative, but poor news as the weekend gross likely missed the ¥100 million mark. And it's not all bad, as its debut alone in Japan looks to be higher than its total gross in nearly every international market (excluding Russia and United Arab Emirates).

>The Hateful Eight cracks the Top 10, and while 74% of its theater count is accounted for above, it should still end up in the Top 10 for the weekend by besting Sherlock (comparable theater counts nationally).

Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly.

>The Martian claims its fourth-consecutive week atop the box office, though The Black Devil and the White Prince came within striking distance in terms of admissions (possibly a <10,000 difference). But even if the latter had/does end up with a narrow victory in admissions (a very slim chance), the former's avg. ticket price has been very high that it'd still win the weekend in terms of gross.

>The Finest Hours has a rather mediocre debut, but considering how it's performed elsewhere around the world, this figure is okay. And its weekend ticket sales pattern suggests it's skewing older, so its weekday business should be strong. If it can hang onto enough screens against the upcoming onslaught of major Spring releases, Japan could end up being its best international market (so far).

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens appears to have fended off Point Break (which experienced an awful second weekend hold) over the weekend, which would have given it an eleventh-consecutive week in the Top 5, however... Born in the EXILE decided to increase which spoiled any chance The Force Awakens had of remaining in the Top 5. Still, it continues to perform extraordinarily well. It's pretty much achieved all that it was expected to, or could do, at this point, so the remaining earnings are just bonus.

>The Hateful Eight looks to have cracked the Top 10 in barely wide release (119 screens), though Sherlock: The Abominable Bride's second weekend is very close based on my estimates. It'll probably come down to the avg. ticket prices to determine which one will be in the Top 10, though I believe The Hateful Eight has the advantage.

>The Martian comes out on top once again at the box office, claiming its fourth-consecutive week at #1 in terms of gross. However... it actually came in second place in terms of admissions, trailing the debut of The Black Devil and the White Prince.

In its fourth weekend, The Martian sold an additional 145,240 tickets, bringing its four week admissions above 1.8 million. It'll have to relinquish its box office crown next weekend to Doraemon, but its four week run on top (in gross) has been very impressive. And since it didn't win any Oscars, it might have a difficult time hanging onto screens with the sheer number of big March releases coming up.

Updated Final Total Projection: ¥3.6 billion ($32 million) / 2.4 million admissions.

>The Black Devil and the White Prince saw quite the increase over estimates, and actually managed to win the weekend in terms of admissions. Those 22 theaters (just 14% of its count) unaccounted for represented a huge 31% of the films overall weekend admissions.

Starring Sexy Zone's Kento Nakajima, the live-action adaptation of Makino's shojo manga sold an impressive 157,680 admissions on only 160 screens over the weekend. 82% of its audience were females, so Nakajima certainly had quite the pull here.

Shojo manga adaptations generally have strong legs, though they're also normally backed by a larger studio than Showgate. It'll be interesting to see if it performs the same way, but regardless, reaching the ¥1 billion milestone seems doable.

Final Total Projection: ¥1.1 billion ($4.0 million) / 900,000 admissions.

>Nobunaga Concerto slips to third place, but that's hardly any concern given its incredible performance after six weeks in release and what it's going to achieve on Monday.

It's worth noting this weekend because it's now on the cusp of exceeding ¥4 billion. Why is this important? Because as of yesterday, and I'm sure Toho will announced it today, it'll be only the second January release to ever earn more than ¥4 billion. The only other film to ever gross more than ¥4 billion prior was 2006's The Uchoten Hotel.

Final Total Projection: ¥4.6 billion ($40 million) / 3.5 admissions. *Likely Yearly Top 10 Contender*

>The Finest Hours comes in above estimates as well, and got so, so close to reaching the ¥100 million mark over the weekend. Disney's adaptation of Casey Sherman's novel sold 60,613 admissions over the weekend across 407 screens. That means it earned a very, very high avg. ticket price of ¥1,647 ($15). Clearly, 3D was a popular format to catch this one in over the weekend, and also by far the most available format (limited 2D showings).

Final Total Projection: ¥450 million ($4.0 million) / 275,000 admissions.

>The Hateful Eight does indeed, officially, debut in the Top 10.

Released through independent distributor, Gaga, Tarantino's latest sold 35,102 admissions across 119 screens. This debut is 27% behind Django Unchained, also released on this weekend in 2012, however it was playing on 148 screens. So taking that into accounted, I'd say the two had fairly comparable debut weekends.

Final Total Projection: ¥275 million ($2.5 million) / 200,000 admissions.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan, the 36th installment in the most-attended film franchise of all-time, is set to dominate the weekend box office. It's very likely to exceed ¥500 million on 500,000+ admissions, but let's see if it can aim for a new franchise opening weekend record.

A new Doraemon film has opened on the first weekend of March every year since 1980 (except for 2005), and signals the start of the Spring box office season. This year's release is a remake of the 1989 film (the 10th installment), which remains the most-attended film in the series (4.2 million admissions).

>The Big Short was in position to do well in Japan had it won big at the Oscars, but without any wins whatsoever, it's probably going to be mostly overlooked now. It still stars Brad Pitt, however, who has some drawing power in the market so I think it'll do decent business.

>Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation will be an interesting one to watch. It serves as the spiritual sequel to the 1981 film based on Jiro Akagawa's novel. The original film was a box office success, so perhaps there's some goodwill leftover for this sequel to perform decently.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan's pre-sales are on par, if not slightly higher than last year's release, and morning/afternoon ticket sales are looking very good. It's currently responsible for ~70% of Saturday's morning ticket sales across two-thirds of the market.

Last year's film delivered the second biggest opening weekend in the long-running franchise, so that'll be the target for the 36th installment to achieve based on current ticket sales. There could still be a chance of seeing a new franchise opening weekend record, too.

Doraemon always kicks off the month of March, signalling the start of the Spring box office season with one of the best opening weekends of every year. For the past decade, the Doraemon films have been Yearly Top 10 contenders.

>The Big Short has some decent pre-sale and morning/afternoon admissions, however, it's only playing on 214 screens. It's been able to keep pace with The Martian at the usual locations, but on a national level, it's almost certainly behind. Based on ticket sales at the moment, it should be on course to exceed the ¥100 million mark, even if just slightly, which would be okay given the screen count.

>Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation certainly isn't receiving any goodwill boost that the original 1981 film may have generated. Its pre-sales are abysmal, as are the morning/afternoon ticket sales, and this probably isn't a film that'll play better as the weekend moves along. This one is looking like a major bust.

As for the holdovers, both The Black Devil and the White Prince and Born in the EXILE are down tremendously compared to last Saturday's ticket sales (some -80% down), but given the special circumstances surrounding each film last Saturday, they won't decline that much over the weekend. However, they're still bound to have sizable drops of perhaps 50% or higher.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nearly on par with last Saturday's pre-sales/early ticket sales, which indicates it's in store for an excellent hold in its twelfth weekend of release. I wouldn't be surprised by a sub-10% drop if Sunday doesn't surprise.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan leads the box office in an expected dominate performance as it does every year. It finished the day trailing last year's film by about 5%, but outpacing 2014's film by 4%. A new opening weekend record in the franchise is likely out of reach, but the franchise continues to deliver big box office results.

The 36th installment in the franchise is on track to sell 500,000-550,000 admissions over the weekend, for a gross around ¥600 million ($5.3/5.4 million).

>The Big Short performed pretty well, but remember that 78% of its overall theater count is accounted for above. So taking that into accounted, a Top 3 debut is still going to be challenging. If Sunday is on par, or improves on Saturday, it could still open around ¥100 million ($900,000) or so over the weekend frame.

>Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation is a major disappointment/bomb. It may still have a chance of cracking the Top 10, but it's not looking likely.

>Mad Max: Fury Road has been out of wide release since September of last year, but it's held onto a few locations ever since, never leaving theaters; so following its excellent Oscar night, Warner Bros. expanded this weekend (back in 39 theaters, 90% accounted for above). And it paid off with it rising back into the Top 20 in its thirty-fourth weekend of release.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan experienced that significant Sunday increase, about +40%, and ended up outpacing last year's film by 3%. It also exceeded 30% capacity at the usual locations over the weekend.

Last year's film achieved the second biggest opening weekend in the franchise's long history, so that's become the goal for this year's film to beat once again. And, while it's a bit of a long shot, there's still the possibility of it achieving the biggest opening weekend in the series, too, based on these figures.

>The Big Short fell slightly on Sunday, which is a bit unfortunate given how well just about everything else performed for the day. Its avg. ticket price should be relatively high, since I'm assuming it's appealing pretty exclusively to male adults (30-60), but probably not high enough to get it to the ¥100 million mark for its debut.

>Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation... I think I can stop talking about this one. It's just a huge disappointment.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates in a bit.

10 (09) ¥30,000,000 ($266,000), -44%, ¥1,490,000,000 ($12.5 million), Saraba Abunai Deka: Long Goodbye (Toei) WK6

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan, I believe, will miss the franchise opening weekend record, but it does appear to have edged out last year's film; and in doing so, it'll achieve the second biggest debut in the series. Weekend estimates have its admissions between 550,000-575,000, and it needs to beat the 597,899 that 2013's release earned to achieve the franchise opening weekend record.

>The Black Devil and the White Prince held on surprisingly well, thanks to a very good Sunday showing, after an inflated opening weekend last week due to stage greeting events. The genre traditionally has strong legs, so perhaps it'll be able achieve them after all.

>The Big Short looks likely to debut below ¥100 million. This isn't too bad, considering its playing on a modest 214 screens, but it probably should have performed better. Since it was positioned to take advantage of a big Oscars night, which didn't happen, it lost a lot of momentum going into the weekend.

>Nobunaga Concerto is still hanging on quite impressively in its seventh week of release (and seventh-consecutive in the Top 5, too). It's already become the second highest-grossing film to be release in the month of January, and at this pace, it'll come closer to reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion than not.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues its huge run in the market, and just might be able to squeak out an extra week or two in the Top 10 later this month to achieve 15/16-consecutive weeks in the Top 10. The March competition, however, is very rough this year with several more major releases to come, so we'll see.

With word-of-mouth off the charts for many of the markets Zootopia opened in, how far do you think the film will go? Or will competition prove too rough like IO and cut it's legs and potential? Thanks!

Good question.

I don't really see Zootopia becoming a significant breakout, but I think it will do quite well and am expecting it to outgross Pixar's Inside Out (and The Good Dinosaur, which releases next week). It's being released on April 23rd, one week before Golden Week, and should do very well over the long holiday period. I'm currently seeing it being a possible ¥5 billion (blockbuster status) contender.

Walt Disney Animation Studios films were never really too successful in Japan. Before Frozen and Big Hero 6, they only had one film achieve blockbuster status, and that was Dinosaur, and just barely.

If Walt Disney Animation continues to release great or exceptional films, then they should be able to establish themselves not just as the household name they've always been, but as a name that represents high quality films, too, worthy of seeing in theaters. Pixar has had a string of "disappointments" this decade (and I believe The Good Dinosaur will underperform next week, too), so there is that audience Walt Disney Animation could potentially bring in as well.

Takeaways:

>Our Little Sister was the big winner this year, taking home Best Picture and Best Director, but it only managed four overall wins out of its twelve nominations.

>The Boy and the Beast becomes director Mamoru Hosoda's fourth-consecutive win in the Best Animation Category. Hosoda has won more Best Animation awards for his work than any other director in Japan. However, the Best Animation Category was created in 2006. If you would include Hayao Miyazaki's Best Picture wins from 1998 and 2002, then they're tied.

>American Sniper delivered for Clint Eastwood, giving him his fifth Best Foreign Language Picture win. Eastwood already lead the category over Spielberg (3 wins), and it's unlikely that another director will be challenging him for quite some time with this additional win.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan took the box office by storm; kicking off the spring box office season in expected dominate fashion once again this year.

The 36th installment in Japan's most-attended film franchise of all-time delivered the third-highest debut in series history, selling an excellent 544,816 admissions across 374 screens. This year's entry in the series is a remake of the 1989 release, which remains the most-attended film in the franchise with 4.2 million admissions.

Projected Final Total: ¥3.8 billion ($33 million) / 3.4 million admissions. [Yearly Top 10 of 2016 Contender]

>The Martian is finally dethroned after reigning atop the box office for four-consecutive weeks. However, it continues to perform very well, having exceeded the ¥3 billion hit milestone with over 2.1 million admissions, and will soon outgross Gravity.

Updated Projected Final Total: ¥3.6 billion ($31 million) / 2.4 million admissions.

>The Black Devil and the White Prince slips to third place, but held surprisingly well after burning off a lot of demand last weekend from various stage greeting events. The latest live-action, shojo manga adaptation, sold 104,669 admissions in its second weekend, and remains a potential ¥1 billion contender.

Updated Projected Final Total: ¥1.0 billion ($9 million) / 825,000 admissions.

>The Big Short came in comfortably above estimates; managing a debut weekend above the ¥100 million mark, and nearly ¥150 million since debuting on Friday.

After losing big at the Oscars, its box office potential this weekend wasn't looking too good, but Adam McKay's latest still sold a fair 84,008 admissions on 214 screens over the weekend, and 109,224 admissions since debuting on Friday. Not bad. There was more potential for this film, I feel, but overall, a decent enough start.

Projected Final Total: ¥700 million ($6 million) / 525,000 admissions.

>And finally, the last time I'll mention it, Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation bombed over the weekend. It missed the Top 10, coming in twelfth place, selling a dismal 21,336 admissions across 238 screens. Terrible performance.
