Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
Any movie released in U.S. theatres (limited or nationwide) between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015 is eligible. So The Revenant will be eligible this time even though it will only open at most theatres in January.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
I think Mad Max could challenge Inception's record of 9 wins here due to its nomination strength across the board. It's not just a technical juggernaut that is in position to win the usual categories like VE/Editing/Cinematography/Sound, but it has makeup, it has acting in Theron/Hardy who happen to fall in categories with no overwhelming favorite, and we happen to also not have a strong contender specialized in Art Direction + Costume this year like we had in the past, e.g. The Great Gatsby and Anna Karenina.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
Yeah, I was thinking supporting actor as well since he certainly won't win against Leo.

Eh I think Hardy is co-lead. Nicholas Holt for supporting actor would work though and something I'd approve.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
I'm definitely not feeling Star Wars is a shoe in. I only see BJ, Rev, Moviegeek, jmovies, Chippy and Corpse putting it in their top 5 according to the top 10 thread. Possibly Dr. Lecter will put it in his, but I'm hopeful he will see reason.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
I think a lot of us (including me) will include films on our ballot that actually has a shot at a nom. For example I'm probably not gonna put Me and Earl and the Dying Girl or maybe even Steve Jobs on my Best Picture ballot because those probably don't have chances to get a nom.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
My voting philosophy has been putting my real top 5, although I do switch slots around to push for my favorites that need more passion. Trying to anticipate the result may make it a self-fulfilling prophecy, and WOKJ has certainly nominated its share of smaller films across different categories.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
How many ballots did you get last year? Interest in Star Wars surely has us at a higher number of active members. Should be a diverse group, without any favorites in the majority of categories.
Can we also not count The Martian as a comedy? I know people will say Wolf, but there's nothing in The Martian like the big qualuds scene. I'd say Wolf actually has to be watched as a comedy to properly enjoy it. Nothing comedic actually happens in The Martian. It's just people using comedy as a survival tactic.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
never too early to speculate, is it? still so many more movies to see, but right now I could see BP being between Arrival and La La Land. Best Animated is Zootopia. Emily Blunt wins everything else. Rogue One gets nothing.

Re: WOKJ Movie Awards Speculation
Arrival and La La Land are definitely the front runners. Zootopia could get in to Best picture if nothing else comes up strong.

I dunno, it doesn't seem like anything has a big passionate base like either Inside Out or Mad Max last year.
