Just downloaded the first season. Eva Green and Josh Hartnett appeal.

This season's second half is just ELECTRIFYING. So much propulsive excitement and eerie intrigue blending together.

Ok, so I'm now onto this. I watched the first episode. Eh, it's ok, I guess, but not the instant gems that The Knick, True Detective or Homeland were. I think it's far too slow, and has the construct of an average TV series. But I will continue watching and see where it goes.

It's nice to see Josh Hartnett again, and it's always nice to see Eva Green :wub2: but I have the same issue that I have with Dalton in anything; he's just far too uptight, and thus appears as though he just cannot act well. And the actor that plays Victor Frankenstein lacks charm. The last few scenes of ep.1 were annoying as hell as they slowly reveal something which isn't a scare at all. It's unnecessarily baiting the audience.

If you continue to watch it, I hope you enjoy it more. This and The Knick are my favorite ongoing television series.

If you continue with your television adventure, I recommend adding Fargo, The Leftovers, Peaky Blinders, and The Returned (Les Revenants) to your list.

Second episode down. Man it's a tough, slow watch. I'm not enjoying this at all. It's taking forever to get into it.

Just stop watching. ;) It is not your cup of tea.

It is a deliberately paced and discursive series in general. If you are not drawn in by the characters and the macabre, Victorian atmosphere, it will never engage you.

But I already have them downloaded, and it takes less time to watch than a film, so I might as well watch at least one or two more.

But in general it is much better than most other TV shows. I just have such a high expectation from TV series' with movie stars now (it's the only TV drama I can watch).

Four down, and this is just formulaic TV melodrama. It has one scene per episode relating to the actual plot and the rest of the time is made up of other stuff. Nothing actually happens. It just saunters along until each episodic cliffhanger, and I'm sure 80% of the plot happens in a rushed fashion in the last two episodes.

I hate this kind of TV. Josh Hartnett is kind of unbearable to watch and Dalton is wooden (always has been). Billie Piper is doing a fantastic job, though -- really surprised at her performance.

It's obvious that Hartnett is a werewolf or something. Why are they dragging it on and on?

It's so silly.

And seeing Calaban doing the theatre FX was cool, but are we really here to see that? It's time-wasting. Further the plot, not this shit. This is TV Writing 101, and I hate, hate, hate it.

I highly disagree with your assertion re: teleplays needing to just go, go, go, move, move, move. I love the deliberate pacing of this series and the way it just lets its characters slowly swirl and exist in their environment. In fact, my favorite episode of the first season, "Closer Than Sisters" (episode no. five), is entirely composed of a flashback. Its atmosphere and sense of gloom/melancholy is simply magical.

Though if you reach the second season, you will find it moves comparatively faster and has both a more concrete structure and a more immediate antagonist.

First seasons' are always slow and uneventful because they're cheap. It's only when producers realise there is a following that they put the big bucks behind it, but for me, I never get that far because I've given up after the first season. Game of Thrones was the same.

Just watched episode five. Eva Green

The first episode intentionally sets it up as if Dalton, Hartnett and Green are a demon-fighting trio, and that we will see blood, action, horror, and excitement in every episode. I feel betrayed. And this betrayal means I won't continue with season two.

As you would say; there is a space between deathly slow and moving at light speed. ;)

I do like the way they've included versions of all well-known monsters without making it so obvious. I guess Hartnett is the Wolfman, then there's Victor Frankenstein + monster, Dorian Gray, Van Helsing, vampires in general (Dracula?), and I guess there will be more later on (Mummy?). It's kind of cool. If only it had more punch.

No idea who the fuck Eva Green's character is in terms of well-known monsters.

Ok, I watched all of them now. I was right about Hartnett being the Wolfman. Should have introduced him much earlier. It's a C- level show. I'm sure the second season is better, but I'm never going to find out.

Green's character may very well end up original.

Absolutely incredible premiere. I suspect this will be the strongest season to date and maybe intensify interest in/respect for the series in general. It just seems to be in a newly recharged and fresh place creatively.

Glad my favorite show has returned. :)
