Last Weekend's Top 10 was the 4th Biggest Weekend of All-Time, and the same films are looking to make a play at the Top 10 Biggest Weekends of All-Time once again this week.

If this weekend does indeed crack the Top 10, it'll be the fourth weekend in the past 9 months to make the Top 10. Three weekends making the Top 10 list in the last 9 months is impressive enough, but four would be an incredible accomplishment.

Jurassic World will see a minimal second weekend drop, likely under 10%. I would project a potential increase, but it opened so high that I think only a drop can happen. Now, if Saturday/Sunday had been either the 13th/14th, generally the biggest days of Obon Festival, a second weekend increase would have been very likely.

All the films that are attracting families/children (Minions, Inside Out), teens/students (The Boy and the Beast), or businessmen/seniors (Hero 2, Japan's Longest Day) should experience weekend increase or very minuscule drops.

This is only one of three times every year that all schools and many businesses are closed at the same time.

Boruto will still see a sharp drop, since it's a frontloaded franchise in its second week, and Kamen Rider always drops around 50% in its second weekend, no matter there being a major holiday going on or not.

Apologies for the lack of updates over the weekend. I was quite busy.

Anyway, this weekend truly delivered and looks to be another one for the record books.

Jurassic World actually managed a second weekend increase, and even if this weekend was boosted by this year's Obon Festival, it's a mighty accomplishment considering how well it opened last week.

According to weekend estimates, the Top 10 delivered the 7th Biggest Weekend of All-Time, just after last weekend delivered the 4th Biggest Weekend of All-Time.

It's also the Biggest Weekend of All-Time without any new openers (the Frozen lead weekend on the list had two openers make the Top 10).

And that's not all. This weekend makes the FOURTH weekend in the past 9 months that's crack the Top 10 below:

Biggest All-Time Weekends (Top 10 Films) [1998-]

01. ¥3.601 billion - 07/09-10/2005 (#1 Film - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith)
02. ¥3.427 billion - 05/03-04/2014 (#1 Film - Frozen)
03. ¥3.423 billion - 07/19-20/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!)
04. ¥3.379 billion - 08/08-09/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
05. ¥3.329 billion - 07/21-22/2007 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
06. ¥3.314 billion - 07/22-23/2006 (#1 Film - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest)
07. ¥3.267 billion [Estimate] - 08/15-16/2015 (#1 Film - Jurassic World)
08. ¥3.160 billion - 04/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Alice in Wonderland)
09. ¥3.129 billion - 04/18-19/2015 (#1 Film - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F)
10. ¥3.048 billion - 07/21-22/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away)
11. ¥3.046 billion - 12/20-21/2014 (#1 Film - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!)
12. ¥2.963 billion - 07/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Arrietty)
Out:
-¥2.960 billion - 07/18-19/2009 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)

2015 has been an incredibly strong year at the Japanese Box Office. There hasn't been an uber-blockbuster released, but most films are breaking out and exceeding expectations. There have been dozens of various records broken.

Before this crazy summer began (end of June), the year was only down 8% from last year. It's likely to close that gap, or end up ahead of last year by the end of August. If Fall of this year delivers in the same manner, 2015 could challenge 2010 as the biggest year of all-time.

I get a fifth weekend just under ¥80 million (~$630,000), and a five week total of ¥1.94 billion ($15.7 million).

It's trailing last year's film by 16/17% after five weeks, so the chance of missing ¥2.5 billion is more likely than not, meaning it'll end up below the fifth movie's ¥2.67 billion total to become the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise.

If the estimates hold, it'll achieve the 9th biggest second weekend and 6th highest two week total since 2001 (local currency). I'll post these lists after I post the Weekend Actuals tomorrow.

However, some asterisks are in order. Its first week in release was boosted by Obon, as is its second weekend. Obon is one of the three strongest weeks of the year, so it's a huge advantage. Also, it was a rare Wednesday opener so it has an extra three days tacked onto its two week total.

>Jurassic World continued to dominate the box office, pulling off the double digit second weekend increase and achieves the 7th Biggest Second Weekend since 2001, and its two week total is the 5th Highest Two Week Total since at least 2001.

The latest entry in the Jurassic Park series sold an additional 611,308 tickets in its second weekend, bringing its 12-day admissions total above 2.95 million.

Post-Obon projections can be tricky, but with no wide openers for another two weeks, legs should remain strong and I see a total over ¥8 billion ($65 million+) and 5.5 million+ admissions. It'll handily be the biggest live-action film of the year, and it'll also win the Summer Crown as ¥8 billion will be too high for The Boy and the Beast to achieve.

**********

>Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation held steady in second place, and despite taking the backseat at the box office against the dino-sized competition, is having a very strong performance in Japan.

The fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise sold 426,527 tickets over the weekend, and exceeded 1.88 million admissions after 10 days in release. Its two week total is also outpacing its predecessor by 31%.

Its lead over Ghost Protocol will decline since it received its holiday boost much earlier in its run, but a total exceeding the ¥5 billion ($40 million) blockbuster milestone is looking very good once again for this franchise.

**********

>Minions rises one spot, coming in third place in its third week. The spin-off continues its very surprising run in the market, selling 323,386 tickets over the weekend, and exceeding 2.5 million admissions after just 16 days.

It's already outgrossed Despicable Me 2, but more importantly, it's the first imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film to reach the ¥3 billion milestone in Japan! And it's still fairly early in its run, too, and will probably make a legitimate play at the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone... Who'd have thought it'd be THIS successful?

**********

>The Boy and the Beast returns to the Top 5 in its sixth week in release, and manages to stay ahead of Jurassic World as this Summer's biggest film for just a little while longer.

Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu's biggest hit-to-date sold 178,017 admissions over the weekend, and exceeded 3.65 million admissions after 37 days in release. The film became Hosoda/Chizu's biggest release, outgrossing Wolf Children's ¥4.22 billion total before the start of the weekend.

Its Summer Crown will soon be handed over to Jurassic World, though it'll exceed the ¥5 billion ($40 million) blockbuster milestone next week to become only the sixth non-Ghibli domestic animated film to reach the mark, however, it'll also become the first non-franchise, non-Ghibli domestic animated film that's ever to ever reach the blockbuster milestone and should go on to exceed ¥6 billion ($50 million) and 4.5 million+ admissions.

**********

>Hero 2 keeps up its respectable run after the harsh second weekend drop it experienced, selling 146,814 admissions in its fifth weekend. The hit Fuji TV sequel is just shy of exceeding 3 million admissions after 30 days in release, and still has a shot of reaching the ¥5 billion ($40 million) blockbuster milestone.

Projected Top 10 Films of 2015:

¥9.16 billion - Big Hero 6
¥8.00-¥8.50 billion - Jurassic World (Projection)
¥7.80 billion - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!
¥6.00-6.50 billion - The Boy and the Beast (Projection)
¥5.73 billion - Cinderella
¥4.90-¥5.10 billion - Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Projection)
¥4.80-¥5.00 billion - Minions (Projection)
¥4.70-¥4.90 billion - Hero 2 (Projection)

¥4.47 billion - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno
¥4.10-¥4.20 billion - Inside Out (Projection)

This should be the Top 10, with the projected final totals for the films still in release, come Fall. So, a gross over ~¥4.1/4.2 billion (Inside Out) will be required, it won't be easy.

September-November has a number of films that should perform well, but they're most likely ¥2/3 billion caliber releases.

Remaining Top 10 Candidates:

>Ted 2 is being released in two weeks and may have potential to make it. The first one earned over ¥4 billion, but its run really feels like a novel event or fluke. And it disappointing majorly in the U.S and in most markets (I think) has probably quelled a lot of interest for it. Unlikely.

>Attack on Titan - Part 2: End of the World is being released next month, but it's a long shot. The first film is "only" going to earn just over ¥3 billion, and increases for Part 2 films are pretty uncommon in Japan. Unlikely.

>Mozu is an upcoming TV drama adaptation that could do well. It's being released on November 7th, and late October/early November usually has a film breakout. Its TV ratings, however, weren't too high (avg. below an 11). Unlikely.

>Evangelion 4.0: Final would probably make the Top 10, if it's released early enough. It still doesn't have a release date, just TBD Winter 2015, but if doesn't get released before December, it'll count as a 2016 release. Likely (if released by December).

You're familiar with the MPAJ's box office year running from December-November, I'd expect?

Also, 2015 will soon have 10 films above ¥4 billion once a few films currently release get there, which hasn't happened since 2010.

10 or more films over ¥4 billion has only happened six other times, with 12 being the record:

Years With 10 Or More Films Above ¥4 billion+

2015 - 10 (minimum)
2010 - 11
2007 - 10
2006 - 12
2005 - 10
2004 - 11
2003 - 10

I thought Attack on Titan itself was a new film. How come a sequel is already out? Is that normal in Japan to just assume that the first will be a runaway success so they make a sequel, and why release it so soon after the first?

I am indeed familiar with the MPAJ calendar. Thank you for your answer.

And interestingly enough, despite all the 'Japan doesn't like Hollywood movies anymore', it looks like the Top 10 will be composed of a majority of Hollywood movies.

Yeah, it's common. Any two-part film sees the second-half released either 6-8 weeks or 4-5 months after the first-half. There are two different release patterns for these types of releases:

-If the first-half is released in November/December (New Year), then the second-half will be released in April (Golden Week).

-If the first-half is released in July/August (Summer/Obon Festival), then the second-half will be released in September (Respect for the Elderly Weekend).

Most of the time it's a successful strategy and saves a lot money by filming two films simultaneously.

Oh, it's a two-parter. I didn't know that. I recently downloaded Attack on Titan thinking it was a completely contained story. Now that there's another part, it's not as appealing.

What a disaster for Pokemon - it's done until they start anew.

Tom Cruise maintains box-office champion in Japan.

Weekend Forecast (08/22-23)

02 (02) ¥340,000,000 ($2.8 million), -41%, ¥3,275,000,000 ($26.4 million), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Paramount) Week 3

04 (04) ¥148,000,000 ($1.2 million), -39%, ¥2,575,000,000 ($20.9 million), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Toho) Week 4
05 (05) ¥146,000,000 ($1.2 million), -38%, ¥5,075,000,000 ($41.1 million), The Boy and the Beast (Toho) Week 7
06 (06) ¥138,000,000 ($1.1 million), -41%, ¥1,925,000,000 ($15.6 million), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 3
07 (07) ¥105,000,000 ($860,000), -47%, ¥4,125,000,000 ($33.7 million), Hero 2 (Toho) Week 6
08 (09) ¥98,000,000 ($800,000), -45%, ¥3,550,000,000 ($28.8 million), Inside Out (Disney) Week 6
09 (08) ¥90,000,000 ($740,000), -50%, ¥850,000,000 ($6.9 million), Japan's Longest Day (Shochiku) Week 3
10 (10) ¥61,000,000 ($500,000), -39%, ¥705,000,000 ($5.8 million), Kamen Rider Drive The Movie: Surprise Drive (Toei) Week 3

Weekend drops across the board this week will be pretty harsh due to Obon Festival inflating last weekend's numbers, so because of that, it's possible that the three films that dropped last weekend (Attack on Titan, Boruto, and Kamen Rider) could have the best holds this weekend.

There are also no wide openers once again this weekend, though they're a couple limited anime releases that might be make a play at the #10 spot. The first is Aikatsu! Music Awards, with the second being Date A Live Movie: Mayuri Judgment. They're unlikely to make the Top 10, but ticket prices are likely to be high, so they wouldn't need the necessary admissions.

Harsh drops across the board, but that's unsurprising following Obon Festival and a weekend that received a boost from the holiday period last week.

A few weekend notes:

>Jurassic World will have overtaken Cinderella over the weekend, making it the biggest live-action release this year, and that's unlikely to change. It's also outgrossed Jurassic Park III, but it'll need some very strong late-legs if it wants to reach the heights of The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

>Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation should have exceeded the ¥3 billion milestone and keeps it chances of once again reaching the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone alive. All the Mission: Impossible films reached the blockbuster milestone, so having a fifth-consecutive installment get there is very, very impressive. It's one of the most consistent and biggest imported franchises in the market.

>The Boy and the Beast probably exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone over the weekend, becoming the third film this calendar year to reach the mark (fifth overall). And having earned over ¥5 billion, it's also become the first domestic animated film to ever achieve blockbuster status that isn't apart of a franchise or established brand (Ghibli, Pokemon, etc.). Needless to say, that Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu will certainly be an established brand after this.

>Boruto: Naruto the Movie will soon outgross The Last: Naruto the Movie to become the highest-grossing film in the Naruto film franchise. The fact that it's going to clear ¥2 billion quite easily is pretty surprising.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (08/22-23)
They announced a new One Piece movie for Summer 2016. I imagine that'll do very well again.

By the way do you know any good sources that give Japanese Box Office totals for movies in the 80's and 90's?

If Eiichiro Oda is involved with the production again it certainly will be, otherwise, it'll probably come back down to the levels of the films released before 2009.

The last two films, One Piece Film Strong World (2009) and One Piece Film Z (2012), were so successful because of Oda's involvement.

And since the new film end up being released 3.5 years since the last one, I'm guessing Oda will indeed be involved with this one, too.
