How plausible is a 15x for Inside Out? Personally, I think that would be the highest it can get and my guess would be 12x or 13x.

A 15x+ is very unlikely since it didn't debut very high. The films that earn those multipliers generally do so because they don't lose hardly any screens/showtimes due to remaining atop the box-office for weeks or months at a time.

Inside Out will be the target of harsher screen/showtime loss as the second wave of Summer tentpoles are being released in a few weeks.

It should get at least a 9/10x, though.

>Hero 2 looks to have delivered the biggest opening weekend for a live-action film this year, with estimates putting it just above the ¥800 million mark. And with an an estimated weekend of 560,000 admissions, it also sold more tickets than any live-action film this year, too.

This opening does come in a little higher than expectations, with a possible sub-20% drop-off opening weekend from the original hit film from 2007. Tomorrow's a holiday, too, Umi no Hi, and the start of Summer vacation, so it's 3-day total is definitely going above the ¥1 billion mark (possibly even above ¥1.1 billion).

The opening is pretty close to Umizaru: Brave Hearts from three years ago over this weekend, and it finished above ¥7 billion. If Hero 2 has equivalent legs, it won't finish far from its predecessor's ¥8.15 billion total and will likely be the highest-grossing live-action film this year (depending on Jurassic World's performance next month).

>The Boy and the Beast holds strong, while dropping to second place, managing to hold off the latest entries from Disney/Pixar and Pokemon. The second weekend drop is similar to Mamoru Hosoda's last film, Wolf Children, and it went on to earn a multiplier above 11 (and Summer Wars almost hit 13 before that).

Mamoru Hosoda/Studio Chizu are definitely mainstream draws now, nearing Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli levels, and Beast will probably exceed the ¥7 billion milestone, if not go even higher to make a run at becoming the highest-grossing film of 2015.

>Inside Out has to settle for third place, it appears, and while the debut is well-below films like Big Hero 6, Frozen, and Monsters University, those comparisons are kind of unfair for many reasons.

Pixar's latest is running almost in-line with Pixar's original films like Wall-E and Ratatouille, which outside of Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo, most of Pixar's original films didn't blockbuster-status. And taking into account being hindered by a Mamaru Hosoda film again like in 2012, the debut for Inside Out looks satisfactory to me and it shouldn't have an issue reaching ¥4 billion.

>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages mirrored last year's film on Saturday, but fell a bit behind on Sunday and for the overall weekend at the usual locations. I think it'll come in above Inside Out's weekend admissions, but the low avg. ticket price will make it really difficult to come ahead in gross.

Unless it played better than last year's film at Aeon Cinemas, its best chain that's unaccounted for, the new film may have decreased once again, but it's hard to say right now. If it decreased, it should only be by 5% or so, but this is still a sign the film franchise continues to struggle.

Thought so....I like the series as well though the last story arc of the 12 gates was kinda disappointing or maybe it acted as a filler specially after the Eclipse and Games Arc, the Tartaros Arc seems to be back to form for the show.

>Hero 2 has sold around 800,000 tickets over the long-weekend based on estimates, which puts it well above the ¥1 billion milestone if accurate.

Its opening is pretty close to 2012's Umizaru: Brave Hearts, which finished with ¥7.33 billion. I'm not sure if its legs will be quite as good, but achieving the ¥7 billion (~$60 million) milestone and 5 million admissions both look reasonable at the moment unless actuals come in significantly lower. It's going to end up a lot closer to the original film's ¥8.15 billion than many were expecting.

And even if actuals do come in lower, Hero 2 is very likely to overtake Cinderella as the year's highest-grossing live-action film.

>The Boy and the Beast is holding very well so far early in its run, and actually managed to hold off the weekend's other big debuts, just falling to second place.

Mamaru Hosoda's latest is still likely on track to reach the ¥7 billion (~$60 million) milestone, which will put it in a very close race with Hero 2 for Summer 2015's biggest film (Jurassic World should be the only remaining upcoming contender). I think The Boy and the Beast still has a slight chance at topping Big Hero 6 to become the year's biggest film, but it'll need a very, very good Obon Week next month.

>Inside Out's third place debut may appear disappointing, but it's honestly not. So ignore any reports calling it a "disappointment". It's very unfair to expect Toy Story 3 or Monsters University numbers here. It's less kid-friendly, and takes on a more dramatic story that kids/families usually aren't looking for in a Summer film.

And the debut estimate itself is still good, too. It's roughly on par with Ratatouille and Wall-E, and not far behind Up, either. Pixar's latest will probably exceed ¥4 billion (~$30 million), and might be able to make a run at ¥5 billion (~$40 million).

>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages doesn't appear to have increased over last year's film's disappointing debut, or if it did, it's very minimal, and a fourth place debut would tie for the second lowest debut ranking since 2002's film which is still the lowest-grossing film in the franchise with ¥2.67 billion.

I want to report good news here, but there isn't any unless estimates are way off. It'll be very difficult to bring the series back over the ¥3 billion mark with these numbers. It honestly appears that many kids have moved on from the series in favor of Yokai Watch, which has taken over Japan over the past two years.

I'm not going to type up details about the other films, but based on these estimates, I'll share some rough projected final grosses for a few:

¥3.2-3.4 billion (~$26-28 million) - Avengers: Age of Ultron
¥2.9-3.1 billion (~$24-26 million) - Terminator: Genysis
¥2.1-2.2 billion (~$17-18 million) - Love Live! The School Idol Movie
¥1.6-1.7 billion (~$13-14 million) - Mad Max: Fury Road

That'd be a disappointing showing for Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages considering The Pokemon Company's aggressive pre-purchase incentives and various promotional tie-ins.

Comparatively to last year's 3-day weekend debut of approximately ¥560,000,000, that would be a drop-off of 30,000,000 with your estimates. I'm hoping that the actuals turn-up to be more on par to last year's result, but I'm not holding my breath.

The reception of the film seems to be positive, so word-of-mouth may be its biggest ally and would result in a better multiplier.

It may or may not have opened higher than last year's film. The admissions aren't there at the usual locations to project an increase, but they're also close enough that the other chains could push it just over last year's debut.

But as I've mentioned, Yokai Watch has become the "it" series for parents and kids in Japan now. It's been beating Pokemon across the board, in every entertainment format possible. This has never happened in Pokemon's history. Pikachu isn't even the mascot for various magazines and other promotional merchandise; Yokai Watch's Jibanyan has taken his place everywhere.

And it's not just beating Pokemon. Its merchandise sales are trouncing everything.

I can't overstate just how big Yokai Watch has really become. The first film opened last December and was less than 2,000 admissions shy of breaking the all-time admissions record still held by The Matrix Reloaded (and The Matrix probably had previews!).

And advance tickets go on sale this Saturday, July 25th, for the second film, and it doesn't even open until December. Many, many theaters across Japan are opening at 06:30AM this Saturday morning so they can manage crowd control, and attempt to meet demand and help control the long lines that'll be forming outside theaters just to purchase an advance ticket.

Pokemon has not seen a competitor like this since arguably Yu-Gi-Oh!

The Pokemon Company have become complacent and predictable in these last few years so I'm entertained by the fact that there is a disturbance in the force!

Konami signed Yu-Gi-Oh!'s death sentence quite early on, so we'll see how Level 5 manages the Yokai Watch property but it seems they are doing a commendable job.

Nintendo has both gold mines on their platforms so their reaping the rewards either way :funny:

I didn't see it listed at any locations, but I'll double check past weeks and future weeks tonight.

>Hero 2 debuts atop the weekend box-office, scoring the second highest debut for any live-action film this year. However, the sequel to the major hit TV series sold 540,963 tickets over the weekend on 443 screens, which is the most admissions for any live-action film on opening weekend so far this year.

Also, over the long 3-day holiday weekend it earned ¥1,058,080,000 ($8.54 million) with 804,613 admissions, becoming the fastest live-action film this year to reach the ¥1 billion milestone.

The weekend frame numbers are 28% lower than the original Hero from 2007, but that's not that bad of a drop-off when you consider all the factors. An 8-year gap is significant, and we saw how that affected the Bayside Shakedown series in 2010. And some original Hero cast members were re-cast, which is a turn-off for long-time fans of the series.

The best comparison is probably Umizaru: Brave Hearts which opened over this weekend in 2012. Hero 2's opening weekend trailed it by 16%, and its 3-day total by a much closer 6%. If it follows a similar path as Umizaru, it'll be on target for ¥6.5-7 billion ($52-56 million) and 4.5-5.0 million admissions.

That'll be plenty enough to pass Cinderella as the highest-grossing live-action film of 2015, but will it earn enough to hold off Attack on Titan and/or Jurassic World next month?<

***************

>The Boy and the Beast drops one spot to second place after its impressive debut weekend, selling over 350,000 tickets and grossly nearly ¥500 million, down 27% in its second weekend of release.

And over its long 3-day holiday weekend, it earned an impressive ¥742,220,000 ($5.99 million), bringing its 10-day total up to ¥1,890,360,000 ($15.4 million).

Mamoru Hosoda's latest continues to track well ahead (60%+) of his last film, 2012's Wolf Children, and if it keeps this pace up, it should achieve the ¥7 billion ($60 million) milestone and over 5 million admissions.

***************

>Inside Out debuted in third place, selling 316,315 tickets over the weekend across 411 screens. This actually Pixar's second lowest debut in Japan, only ahead of 2012's Brave, and I don't think it's just coincidence that both films opened against Mamoru Hosoda's latest release. Disney/Pixar needs to steer clear of July when he's releasing a film, considering he's close now to achieving Hayao Miyazaki's level of recognition.

Now that we're officially in the Summer box-office season, though, legs will be very good and it should be able to outgross a few other Pixar films that it opened behind, including: Cars (¥2.23 billion) and Cars 2 (¥3.01 billion), likely Toy Story 2 (¥3.45 billion), and eventually should be aiming for a similar total as Ratatouille (¥3.90 billion) and Wall-E (¥4.00 billion).

***************

>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages comes in at a disappointing fourth place, though it did rank third in admissions over the weekend. Playing across 364 screens over the weekend, the eighteenth Pokemon movie sold 351,592 tickets.

And this happens to be the second lowest opening in the Pokemon series, only ahead of 2002's Pokemon movie, and experiences a 2.4% decline in admissions compared to last year's film. The Pokemon Company did just about everything in their power to turn this concerning downward spiral around for the new film, but they just couldn't do it.

What's very troubling now, is that this year's debut is less than the Crayon Shin-chan film in gross, and only slightly higher in admissions, and that's very, very concerning. And the Pokemon movies used to consistently match or do better than Doraemon and Detective Conan, the other two big annual franchises, but it's opening to half their numbers now...

The Pokemon franchise has been on a huge decline over the past two years in every format (games, toys, merchandise, films, etc.), and I just don't know if it'll manage to recover from this.
