As I mentioned, it's practically mirroring it with just a few hundred admissions separating them on the first day at nearly half the theaters across Japan.

Up 293 admissions at 109 Cinemas.
Up 350 admissions at Movix Cinemas.
Up 488 admissions at Kinezo Cinemas.
Down 53 admissions at United Cinemas.
Down 742 admissions at Toho Cinemas.

So, it's up 336 admissions in total across the usual locations (43% of the market).

Are Sunday admissions higher than Saturdays usually?

Seems as such for many, excluding Pokemon which is odd since I thought Sunday=family time.

Yeah, Sunday is the busiest day of the week, especially for family films and films that skew towards senior citizens. That is unless a film is skewing 90%+ towards females, then Wednesday is the biggest day since females get 50% off tickets that day.

It's not, however, a rule that everything increases on Sundays. Sometimes openers don't, and certain films that have a built-in-fanbase won't increase on Sundays, either, early in their run. Pokemon skews very young and towards families, but that also includes a fanbase.

Tomorrow is also a holiday and the start of Summer vacation, so this Sunday can behave a bit differently.

If you're wondering what kind of multiplier Inside Out will get, it should land between 9-12. That's become the typical range for Pixar, Ghibli (formally), and recently Mamoru Hosoda/Studio Chizu films this time of year.

The Boy and the Beast overtakes Inside Out for the day much, much earlier than yesterday (1PM versus 7PM).

Disney/Pixar needs to avoid July when Mamoru Hosoda/Studio Chizu releases a film in the future. His films seem to hurt Pixar's releases a lot more than Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli releases ever did in the past.

Sorry for barraging you with questions BUT ( ) how does competition work in Japan in terms of multiple movies aiming for a similar demographic, is it similar to the US box office or completely different, how much are movies that are not Pokemon, Yokai Watch etc... affected by competition and reviews, and is it true that competition doesn't really matter that much in Japan and how popular is the Despicable Me brand and how well should Minions perform? Thanks in advance.

In regard to Competition:

Competition generally only affects films when it comes to screens/showtimes. There are rarely any cases of one film hurting another, even if similar films are released at the same time.

For example, three big films just opened this weekend and everything is going to avoid a 40% drop except maybe Terminator: Genisys, although it could still drop sub-40%, too.

Half of this weekend's Top 10 are also animated films, and they're not really affecting one another except for possibly Inside Out looking to be affected by The Boy and the Beast (just like Brave was by Wolf Children in 2012). It's one of a few known examples of a film hurting another outside of competing for screens/showtimes.

In regard to Reviews:

They do matter, but it really comes down to WOM rather than simple positive/negative reviews.

There are many cases every year where a very well-reviewed film has mediocre legs, and poorly-reviewed films end up having strong legs. In the majority of cases, strong reviews haven't proven a key factor in generating interest where they wasn't much to begin with.

In regard to Despicable Me/Minions:

The first Despicable Me film surprises, earning over ¥1 billion. That isn't an impressive sum in itself, but it is for an imported non-Disney animated title. Then, the sequel managed to cross the ¥2 billion milestone. They've also sold fairly well on DVD, so they do seem to have gained an audience.

As for Minions, it'll be interesting to track. I don't think the Japanese are captivated by the minions themselves as the rest of the world, rather Gru and the kids seem to be more popular characters. Spin-off titles in general rarely perform better than main franchise films, too, so I'm not expecting Minions to outgross Despicable Me 2, but achieving ¥2 billion again is certainly possible.

Note: Typhoon Nangka will be affecting all of Japan through the weekend, so weekend admissions could be a bit deflated as a result.

Hero 2 is looking mighty impressive. It's on pace to beat yesterday, despite yesterday's stage greetings. So much for that Sunday drop-off, heh. There's a good chance it can reach ¥800 million+ over the weekend with possibly 600,000 admissions, delivering the best opening weekend for any live-action film this year. It'll be tough for Attack on Titan or Jurassic World to beat that on their opening weekends next month.

And this is turning out to be one strong Sunday. The typhoon doesn't seem to be affecting the box office at all, or if it has, it just deflated yesterday a bit.

Don't know if important news or not, Toho claims that the Pokemon series has now reached a cumulative of over 70 million admissions.

They are aiming for a 3 Billion Yen gross +

It's true. I had it the franchise over 69 million admissions after last year's film earlier this year. I update the biggest movie franchises in Japan once in awhile (last time was back in March).

Pokemon is the 5th most-attended movie franchise in Japan, after: Doraemon > Godzilla > Otoko wa Tsurai yo > Harry Potter.

It actually doesn't appear so. Last year didn't include United Cinemas yet.

If you exclude United Cinemas this year, then this year's film sold 114,787 admissions, down -5% from last year's film.

I'm working on the weekend estimates right now, so sit tight.

How plausible is a 15x for Inside Out? Personally, I think that would be the highest it can get and my guess would be 12x or 13x.

A 15x+ is very unlikely since it didn't debut very high. The films that earn those multipliers generally do so because they don't lose hardly any screens/showtimes due to remaining atop the box-office for weeks or months at a time.

Inside Out will be the target of harsher screen/showtime loss as the second wave of Summer tentpoles are being released in a few weeks.

It should get at least a 9/10x, though.

>Hero 2 looks to have delivered the biggest opening weekend for a live-action film this year, with estimates putting it just above the ¥800 million mark. And with an an estimated weekend of 560,000 admissions, it also sold more tickets than any live-action film this year, too.

This opening does come in a little higher than expectations, with a possible sub-20% drop-off opening weekend from the original hit film from 2007. Tomorrow's a holiday, too, Umi no Hi, and the start of Summer vacation, so it's 3-day total is definitely going above the ¥1 billion mark (possibly even above ¥1.1 billion).

The opening is pretty close to Umizaru: Brave Hearts from three years ago over this weekend, and it finished above ¥7 billion. If Hero 2 has equivalent legs, it won't finish far from its predecessor's ¥8.15 billion total and will likely be the highest-grossing live-action film this year (depending on Jurassic World's performance next month).

>The Boy and the Beast holds strong, while dropping to second place, managing to hold off the latest entries from Disney/Pixar and Pokemon. The second weekend drop is similar to Mamoru Hosoda's last film, Wolf Children, and it went on to earn a multiplier above 11 (and Summer Wars almost hit 13 before that).

Mamoru Hosoda/Studio Chizu are definitely mainstream draws now, nearing Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli levels, and Beast will probably exceed the ¥7 billion milestone, if not go even higher to make a run at becoming the highest-grossing film of 2015.

>Inside Out has to settle for third place, it appears, and while the debut is well-below films like Big Hero 6, Frozen, and Monsters University, those comparisons are kind of unfair for many reasons.

Pixar's latest is running almost in-line with Pixar's original films like Wall-E and Ratatouille, which outside of Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo, most of Pixar's original films didn't blockbuster-status. And taking into account being hindered by a Mamaru Hosoda film again like in 2012, the debut for Inside Out looks satisfactory to me and it shouldn't have an issue reaching ¥4 billion.

>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages mirrored last year's film on Saturday, but fell a bit behind on Sunday and for the overall weekend at the usual locations. I think it'll come in above Inside Out's weekend admissions, but the low avg. ticket price will make it really difficult to come ahead in gross.

Unless it played better than last year's film at Aeon Cinemas, its best chain that's unaccounted for, the new film may have decreased once again, but it's hard to say right now. If it decreased, it should only be by 5% or so, but this is still a sign the film franchise continues to struggle.
