"American Crime"
This premieres tonight at 10PM on ABC after Scandal. It has an 11-episode order and is being viewed as a 'limited series,' with the current cast only signed on for one season.
Super excited for this one. It's getting some of the best reviews of any show on broadcast this television season.
"One of the most powerful and original dramas to grace the broadcast networks in years." -- PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
"With grit, guts and some of the best performances you’ll see on TV this year, American Crime aims for truth and pulls no punches getting there." -- SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
"This is an ABC drama that is not just good, it’s startlingly good, as bracing in its own way as "True Detective" was on HBO last year." -- THE NEW YORK TIMES
"American Crime’s direction is uncertain, but it looks to be one of the more uncomfortable, engrossing rides any commercial broadcast series has taken. Put away the phone and sit yourself down. You’ll want to see where this goes." -- BOSTON HERALD

Re: "American Crime" (Season 1)
I enjoyed the pilot. Each storyline drew me in, particularly the drug-abusing street couple.
One concern, though: the cinematography and editing are almost too chic, too self-conscious. I thought there were moments which deserved to just play, just live and breathe for a moment, without the see-what-I-can-do framing and rapid-fire cuts.
Oh, and Timothy Hutton's hair is legendarily bad.

Random, but this series reminds me: does anyone else remember when Starz tried to turn Crash into a series with Dennis Hopper? Such a strange project in retrospect.

Wow, American Crime was pretty impressive. It felt very cinematic and looks like it's going to explore a lot of interesting themes. I was kind of reminded of Soderbergh's Traffic.

The acting on this show is great. Felicity Huffman's sneer at that one detective when she saw she was black - I think she's guaranteed an Emmy nomination at least.

I will positive because the acting is strong, and it has a general veneer of prestige, but this is a rather heavy-handed series at times.

Great episode last night. The block party scene was incredibly tense.

This season is pretty good so far. Definitely intrigued by the central mystery/case.

Is Huffman playing a different character this season? Would I need to see the first season to see the second? My parents have this season DVR'd so far so I'm thinking of giving it a shot.

No, it's a completely new storyline and she's playing a new character.
First season was okay but interesting. I'm liking this one much more so far.

Re: "American Crime"
I havent seen the first season but are the two seasons related? Do you need to see the first one or are they standalone seasons?
This story is much more interesting to me. It has all these different storylines that intersect a lot more fluidly rather than conveniently last season. The cast is doing a great job.

Oh dear. I doubt they'd actually take it to that extreme but we'll see. I doubt it though.
...
I was worried he was gonna do it off screen or something. Very tense. Poor boy.
Side note...why does the show have to spoil the aftermath.

I'm not sure if what happened was better or worse than if he'd actually just killed himself. Man was that heartbreaking. Poor kid and his poor mom. I feel really bad for them.
