Post Thief (Criterion) - January 14th
:D :D A day-one purchase without a doubt.

Quote:
The revered American auteur Michael Mann burst out of the gate with his bold artistic sensibility fully formed with Thief, his first theatrical feature. James Caan stars, in one of his most riveting performances, as a no-nonsense ex-con safecracker planning to leave the criminal world behind after one final diamond heist, but discovering that escape is not as simple as he hoped. Finding hypnotic beauty in neon and rain-slick streets, sparks and steel, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness and tactile approach to action that would define such later iconic entertainments from Mann as Miami Vice, Manhunter, and Heat.

- New digital restoration from a 4K film transfer, approved by director Michael Mann, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
- Audio commentary featuring Mann and actor James Caan
- New interviews with Mann, Caan, and Johannes Schmoelling of the band Tangerine Dream, which contributed the film’s soundtrack
- Trailer
- One Blu-ray and one DVD, with all content available in both formats
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Nick James

I have it downloaded. Have had it for a long time. I should watch it one of these days as I love Mann. I've seen Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Ali, Manhunter, and The Last of the Mohicans, but still need to see The Insider (also downloaded and ready), Thief, L.A. Takedown, and The Keep.

One of the few Mann-directed films I haven't seen yet (alongside L.A. Takedown, The Keep and Ali).

This is a must-see.

The Keep is an interesting, atmospheric failure, though I have only seen it in a full-screen/pan-and-scan version. :(

Where they crop or add "pans" to widescreen images so as to fit boxy 4:3 television screens. Used to be extremely prevalent among home-video releases and films shown on television.

Ah, yes! This is quite annoying. It still shouldn't take away too much from the enjoyment.

43% image in 2.35:1 and 28% in 1.85:1 movies.

I grew up with a square TV, so if anything wide screen adds to the enjoyment, but pan-and-scan doesn't take away from it because that's all I knew.

As long as the movie was shown in its correct aspect ratio even on a square TV it's OK. Europe was more advanced than the U.S. in this regard and it was more common for them to show movies as they should. With the popularity of widescreen TVs and cable or premium channels it seems the U.S. has achieved parity.

If the film was labelled "widescreen" then the aspect ratio was fine (black bars at top and bottom) but a lot of the time the full [square] screen was filled, which means it got cut off.

Admission of youthful idiocy: for a while as a child (around 1999 to maybe 2001), I hated this "widescreen" nonsense. I thought I was losing part of the image with the bars. ;)

That explains why you two get along so good. When David met Algren...

We're not afraid of being ourselves, so we do not need to hide behind a curtain of insecurity like you, Price, where you project yourself as a witty and cunning individualist. I wonder when you'll drop the act.

I'm a cunning stunt, not a cunning individualist.
