It's not that bad. :P Kinda the norm for the type of film it is.

Also coming up late is Non-Stop (September 06th) [7 months later], The Legend of Hercules (September 06th) [8 months later], I, Frankenstein (September 06th) [8 months later], About Time (September 27th) [10 months later].

But the latest I currently see on the schedule (without going into the late year/2015) is Getaway (September 20th) [A full 13 months after its release in the US].

2-4 months is the typical wait for most Hollywood films. Only a few manage to get released during the same week/month as in the US.

6-9 months is the normal wait for smaller films like those listed above, mostly due to finding a local distributor it seems.

9 months-1 year+ can happen to some films though. But the majority of films released in the US (and countries like South Korea, France or India) will eventually get some sort of release, if not theatrical, then on DVD.

Corpse, Dragon 2 is down -50% Fri-Fri this week. Looks like we've only got the movie to hold onto.

Well, I'd like that Art of book you've got too! But all in all, it follows KFP2s constant disappointment to a tee.

It has a movie page and Fox is listed as the distributor (distributor listed is important), but no release date or frame has been announced yet. Just "2014". But as I mentioned, 2-4 months is the general waiting period for a film to make its way to Japan theaters. And 6+ months isn't unusual for smaller films, and considering its performance will be small in Japan, a release date in December or in 2015 is possible.

Just hope it gets released at all though because a number of DreamWorks/Blu Sky, etc. films haven't been receiving theatrical releases in Japan for a few years now due to their very underwhelming success in the market.

Megamind, Ice Age 4, Rio, Rio 2, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, Turbo, The Croods, The Nut Job, Free Birds, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Epic, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and maybe others didn't receive theatrical releases in Japan. Dragon 2 could have the same fate now that it's disappointing in the US. But hopefully the goodwill of the original (it's the only non-Disney/off-brand CGI animated film on various movie sites' Top 100 films) and its significant increases so far in non-US markets help it out.

01 :: $244.0 million - Spirited Away (2001)

Corpse, even though $244 million total for "Spirited Away" is way more correct than widely quoted ridiculous $230 million posted on Boxofficemojo, the $244 million is also too small.

ANALYSIS

As you posted several times "Spirited Away" total after week 21 (week ending December 9, 2001) was ¥28.40 billion ($233.5 million).

This graph ...

Image

... shows exchange rate US $1 to Japan Yen for period July 20, 2001 - December 9, 2001 with average value US $1 = 121.4370 Yen. Using that exchange rate value on ¥28.40 billion total after week 21 we get $233.870 million which is pretty close to $233.5 million which you posted. To get more accurate number in USD I made an analysis using average exchange rate USD/JPY on weekly basis applied on "Spirited Away" week grosses, and I got $233.814 million which is again pretty close to $233.5 million which you posted.
Since week 21, "Spirited Away" made additional ¥2 billion for the final total ¥30.40 billion. At the same time according to your posted numbers after week 21 "Spirited Away" made only $10.5 million ($244 million (Total gross) - $233.5 million (gross after week 21) = $10.5 million) which is clearly impossible, because ¥2 billion is way more than $10.5 million (to get $10.5 million from ¥2 billion you must apply exchange rate US $1 = 190.5 JPY which is completely wrong!).

Next graph shows exchange rate US $1 to Japan Yen for period December 10, 2001 - December 29, 2002 (from week 22 onwards):

Image

As graph shows exchange rate USD/JPY was very unfavorable for Japan Yen from December 2001 till May 2002 reaching almost US $1 = 135 Yen at one point but that is still way better than US $1 = 190.5 JPY which you must apply on final ¥2 billion to get $244 million total!

I don't know when exactly "Spirited Away" topped ¥30.40 billion but considering that week ending March 31, 2002 was the last time when "Spirited Away" was in Japan Box Office Top 10 I assume that "Spirited Away" made most of ¥2 billion till April, 2002 so I made another graph which shows exchange rate US $1 to Japan Yen for period December 10, 2001 - April 2002.

Image

Applying average exchange rate value US $1 = 131.6564 Yen on ¥2 billion we get $15.2 million therefore "Spirited Away" total in USD is at least $233.8 million + $15.2 million = $249 million. This total is even slightly bigger if "Spirited Away" reached final total ¥30.40 billion way after March 31, 2002 because as second graph shows since March 31, 2002 exchange rate USD/JPY become more favorable for JPY.

Wow, very impressive. It it helps you refine the numbers even more, I can provide a little more info about its run:

>It fell out of the Top 10 in its 27th week in release (Jan. 19-20, 2002), after spending 26-consecutive weeks there.

>It resurfaced back into the Top 10 in its 33rd week in release (Mar. 03-04, 2002) and remained there for four more-consecutive weeks (Mar. 30-31, 2002), bringing it up to 31 non-consecutive weeks in the Top 10.

>In its 34th week of release (Mar. 10-11, 2002), it was reportedly only ¥500 million away from ¥30 billion. So its 34-week total would have been ~¥29.5 billion.

There is a lot of misreporting totals for many films in Japan that go on to have very long runs (in wide release for at least 6 months to a year), so the more accurate the numbers we can gather, the better. :)

12 (09) ¥16 million ($150,000), -63%, ¥1.08 billion ($10.6 million), A Bolt from the Blue (Toho) Week 6

Pretty rough weekend. It almost looks like last weekend was a holiday or discount day weekend, but that's not the case.

Frozen earns itself a 16th-consecutive week on top, sharing the record for Most-Consecutive Weeks at #1 with Spirited Away now.

The openers all did fine (most June releases are dumped there), and I'm actually surprised Transcendence is estimated above ¥100 million ($1 million). Depp is the only reason it managed to do this "well". And I forgot to include the new Grudge in the weekend forecast (my bad), but it only opened at 122 locations, and these near limited releases often change a lot from estimates. Thirst is the most-impressive of the openers. A weekend near ¥100 million is very strong considering the few films that open early on Friday with stage greetings tend to collapse over the weekend itself.

But now that another dull June is over, we can begin to see the many major titles July and August have to offer. Beginning with Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow this upcoming weekend.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Depp vs Cruise vs Jolie
Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and Angelina Jolie have been the biggest three, and most-consistent Hollywood draws over the past decade at the Japan Box-Office in terms of 1st place debuts, overseas market ranking (it's fairly rare if Japan isn't their top overseas market, and even rarer if they're not among the Top 3), etc.

And all three have new films being released practically against each other (Transcendence just opened, and Edge of Tomorrow and Maleficent open next week), so here is their filmography since 2003 (though note that Cruise was even more popular in the 80s/90s, too, before Depp/Jolie became superstars):

¥1.87 billion ($22.7 million) - The Tourist (2011) [#1 Overseas Market]
TBD - Maleficent (July 05, 2014)

*Excludes all voice-characters, though I did include Jolie's motion-capture role in Beowulf. That was a clear selling point.*

Thanks! Of course any additional info can help, particularly dates with total grosses at the later stage of theatrical run. I am very grateful because you provided so much great information (through hundreds of posts) in this thread regarding Japan box office. :)

Taking this additional information into account I came to $249.3 million. Considering there is still a lot of things I needed to guess for conversion of the final ¥2 billion I won't bother you with new detailed analysis, but from additional information (especially '¥29.5 billion' part) I assume that at least ¥600-650 million "Spirited Away" grossed after it left the Top 10 at the end of March, so applying more favorable exchange rate at the later weeks it resulted with additional $300k. Anyway, taking all possible deviations into account I would say that previously mentioned $249 million is also fairly accurate.

Besides sharing a record 16 weeks at the top of Japanese box office, Hayao Miyazaki and "Frozen" are also connected with one interesting trivia. "Frozen" was inspired by the story "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen and Miyazaki as an author was greatly inspired by Soviet animated film "Snezhnaya koroleva" (The Snow Queen, 1957) directed by Lev Atamanov. A brilliant film, which I highly recommend it to all fans of old school animation. :)

Your analysis of its performance is convincing enough to change it from $244 to $249 million.

Trailers for this Summer's Biggest/Notable Local Releases:

Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) - July 12th

Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) - July 19th

Say, "I Love You" likely won't post big numbers, but it's bound to have a long run throughout the Summer box-office which could rank it higher than expected. One Direction is also somewhat popular in Japan (Boy bands still remain very popular), so them providing the theme song may help it, too.

Pokemon should see a significant increase over the last film since it's the first in the XY series (the first film of a new generation has always seen a big increase), so it'll be a big hit by default. Most films this Summer will need to be playing catch-up since it's guaranteed a big number.

Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) - July 26th

Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) - August 01st

The first Eight Ranger film was a surprise success in 2012. Sequels of this nature tend to remain flat or see drop-offs though, but the band still remains one of the most popular in Japan.

The Rurouni Kenshin franchise has picked up where Harry Potter left off for Warner Bros. in Japan (much smaller figures, but still). Since Harry Potter concluded, the first Rurouni Kenshin film in 2012 has been their biggest hit by a significant margin (it earned as much as the two Hobbit films combined). The sequel is two films or parts, and looks great. The first part opens August 01st, followed by the second-half on September 13th.

Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) - August 08th

Stand By Me, Doraemon is the first CGI animated film in the long running, and still incredibly popular Doraemon franchise. Last year, the film franchise exceeded 100 million admissions making it the most-attended film franchise in Japan (ahead of Godzilla, Harry Potter, etc.). This film is also directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who has become one of Japan's most famous ad critically acclaimed movie directors known for the Always franchise and recently, the huge blockbuster hit, The Eternal Zero. Transformers: Age of Extinction opens the same weekend and won't have it easy.

Memories of Marnie (or When Marnie Was There) is more than likely going to be the #1 film this Summer, but it still doesn't have a trailer released. Studio Ghibli has released trailers literally weeks before a film's release date before (The Wind Rises being a recent example) and had no trouble, so no worries. I expect it the trailer will land this week however.

10 (--) Ghost in the Shell - Arise Border 3: Ghost Tears (Toho Video Division) DEBUT

>Frozen ties the record for Most-Consecutive Weeks at #1 with 16, matching Spirited Away. Over the weekend, it earned ¥274,384,350 ($2.7 million) with 204,445 admissions, down -25%.

After 108 days in release, it has grossed ¥24.25 billion ($237.9 million) with 19.06 million admissions. It's ¥1.95 billion away from overtaking Titanic to become the 2nd highest-grossing film of all-time, and 440,000 admissions away from overtaking Tokyo Olympiad to become the 2nd most-attended film of all-time.

>Transcendence becomes Johnny Depp's lowest opener in over a decade (excluding The Rum Diary), but it was also the least marketed (I also don't think Depp made a trip to Japan this time, his first non-appearance since Public Enemies I believe) having to settle with Pony Canyon (small independent distributor) picking it up after it bombed everywhere else.

Over the weekend, it grossed ¥117,953,700 ($1.1 million) with 85,845 admissions on 535 screens. It should have a total a little over ¥500 million ($5.1/5.2 million).

So it doesn't stand a chance of beating Titanic in Yen but it will still beat Tokyo Olympiad in admissions..

Hmm... there's still a chance it beats Titanic to become the #2 film. It'll be a challenge, but if it can survive the upcoming July 19-20 Weekend, it'll most likely do it. That weekend will hit it hard though, as well as anything left in wide release from May/June. It'll kinda restart the entire Top 10 for the Summer.

That weekend has five wide openers, including Studio Ghibli and Pokemon films, kicking off Summer Vacation this year.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2014 Charts Updated (As of 06/29)
Someone asked me back when I posted the 2013 Yearly Results, what does a film earning ¥1 billion in Japan equate to in the US?

So here is a rough chart showing how much a film earning ¥1 billion, ¥2 billion, ¥5 billion, ¥10 at the box-office in Japan would compare to in USD terms when comparing the number of films that have reached each respective mark:

Approx. Yen to Dollar Equivalent (Japan vs US)

¥30.0 billion = $750 million
¥25.0 billion = $600 million
¥20.0 billion = $500 million
¥17.5 billion = $475 million
¥15.0 billion = $450 million
¥12.5 billion = $400 million
¥10.0 billion = $350 million
¥9.0 billion = $320 million
¥8.0 billion = $290 million
¥7.0 billion = $260 million
¥6.0 billion = $240 million
¥5.0 billion = $220 million
¥4.0 billion = $180 million
¥3.0 billion = $150 million
¥2.5 billion = $125 million
¥2.0 billion = $100 million
¥1.5 billion = $75 million
¥1.0 billion = $50 million

Around 60 films reach ¥1 billion or more in Japan each year, which is pretty much the same number of films reaching $50 million in the US in recent years.

So, Frozen for example is about the equivalent of a $600 million film right now, while Thermae Romae II would be about the equivalent of a $190 million film, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be about the equivalent of a $150 million film. X-Men: Days of Future Past just hit ¥1 billion this past weekend, so it would be about the same as a $50 million film.

July 16th, but it should be slight over the ¥25 billion ($245 million) mark by that date. So it just becomes a question of whether or not Disney is after the #1 Non-Japanese Record or not, and if it can survive that following weekend (July 19-20).

In news on this upcoming weekend, Maleficent is going really, really wide. Edge of Tomorrow is getting the standard wide release it appears, which if perfectly fine, time and time again it's been proven that playing on more screens and more times a day doesn't always translate into bigger results. It probably has few dubbed showtimes (if any at all), too, since it stars Cruise. I didn't see any dubbed previews last weekend.

Frozen is losing 30-40% of its showtimes/seats at Toho and Movix Cinemas (2nd and 4th biggest chains). The other chains are probably similar.

Maleficent actually has more showings than any other film at Toho Cinemas this year:

Saturday's # of Showings (Toho Cinemas)
608 - Monsters University (07/06/13)
566 - The Wind Rises (07/20/13)
555 - Maleficent (07/05/14)
547 - Midsummer Equation (06/29/13)
522 - Frozen (03/15/14)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: When Marnie Was There News -Trailer &
Image

Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (far left above), along with the cast members, announced yesterday that his new film, When Marnie Was There, has officially been completed!

When Marnie Was There will be the first Studio Ghibli film without any involvement from co-founders, Hayao Miyazaki (retired), Isao Takahata, or long-time producer Toshio Suzuki (retired from producing).

Hiromasa Yonebayashi was Studio Ghibli's youngest director (37) when he made his debut in 2010, and was later named as Hayao Miyazaki's successor after much speculation following his retirement announcement last year.

The trailer was also aired for the first time yesterday:

Adapted from Joan G. Robinson's children's novel When Marnie Was There (or Omoide no Marnie), it's a coming-of-age story about a young girl that befriends another girl named Marnie, who just so happens to be a ghost.

The film's theme song, 'Fine on the Outside', is written and performed by Priscilla Ahn. It marks the first time that a Studio Ghibli film has theme song entirely in English.

This is Hiromasa's second feature film, his debut film, Arrietty, grossed ¥9.25 billion ($111.9 million) in 2010 to become Studio Ghibli's most-successful non-Miyazaki film, as well as the highest-grossing film by a first-time director in Japan.

When Marnie Was There opens on July 19th.
