Post Late Night discussion thread
So, we're one week away from Jay Leno's last... er, "second" last Tonight Show and less than a month away from Jimmy Fallon taking over Tonight while Seth Meyers takes over Late Night. Any new thoughts?

I feel this happened way too fast and could serve to bury NBC further. Fallon is not a proven host. He gets his name out there, but there's still a sense that he is a subpar late night host. On the other hand, NBC will never allow themselves to be seen as failures and won't oust Fallon like they did with Conan, no matter how low it goes.

Seth Meyers is fun in small, seven-minute doses, but I see even less of a late night host than Fallon. He will likely provide a bland, occasionally humorous Late Night. Like a lesser Leno.

Then there's this new interview from Leno:

Don't blame Jay for Conan debacle!

I feel like blaming Jay Leno for Conan is largely wrong, but the fact that it went down the way it did still makes Leno out to be the bad guy. What really saddens me is that this is almost identical to five years ago, except one key factor: Jimmy Fallon is kissing Jay Leno's ass. Conan didn't do that because Conan respected Letterman more than Leno. Leno can lie all he wants but there's no way he's fine to do now what he was supposed to do five years ago: make way for the younger guy.

I think Fallon will do fine. He's not as funny or as good a host as Conan, but he's more "fun". Also, now old people will stop watching regular tv thank goodness.

If anything, I think this will benefit cable shows, specifically Daily Show and Colbert. They're already winning in 18-49 as it is.

I wonder how much Fallon's Tonight Show will resemble, in content and in spirit, his Late Night, which has, I believe, found its voice and become a solid, cool program. Will NBC allow the party to more or less go on as it is, or will they try to flatten and streamline it? This definitely hurt Conan O'Brien during the transition. Hosting the Tonight Show may have represented the realization of his lifelong dream, but it was definitely not the finest venue for him in regard to creativity.

Wait, really? I totally disagree.

Fallon's been hosting Late Night for five years now, that's plenty of time. Not to mention his show gets critical acclaim and gets by far the most buzz of the late night shows on social media because of the skits/celebrities/games/performances he has. Just this morning I saw like 5 different people posting about the Full House reunion he had on last night.

Plus, from what I understand, Fallon's Tonight Show will basically be the same thing as his current show. Still in New York, still with The Roots, no real change to the format.

I've always HATED Leno's monologues. But yes, Leno is a pretty good interviewer.

John Oliver doesn't cut it for me. I would rarely/never watch The Daily Show if he became the main, permanent host.

Also, it still kinda pisses me off that Craigy Ferg doesn't get his due as king of late night. His stuff in-between the monologue and interviews arent that strong but he is by far the best at the combination of monologue/interviewer. He completely does away with the whole "plugging a product" shit that most late night shows are forced to do and just has a real conversation with people. I think he brings out the human in celebrities that no one else can.

Has anyone watched Leno's 60 Minutes piece? It's hilarious how the two situations are identical, he has nothing good to say about Conan and nothing but nice things to say about Fallon. He basically says "I get this, he's a talented guy and NBC doesn't want to lose him. And he's very nice, polite, gracious." So it really does come down to Leno thinking Conan is talentless and resenting that he didn't kiss his ass out the door.

To add to what Magnus said though about how Craig Ferguson is so good at interviewing guests, one need only watch his episode on the day of the Boston bombings to show his top form of having natural conversations with his guests.

First Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon is on as we speak.

I'm obsessed with the fact that this is basically the exact same show as Late Night so far. Don't fix what ain't broke.

Joan Rivers on the show for the first time in my lifetime.

And when was the last time the musical guest was on before the first main guest? And will we ever see it happen again?

Okay, now I'm depressed. The show has been good so far, and I'm sure it'll get better as it goes along (but will die-hard Leno fans, whoever those freaks are, even care to check in again after tonight...it's already aggressively different), but this should be Conan.

The set and studio size would've been perfect for him, oh, and ITS IN NEW YORK. NBC really fucked him over, not just by not getting behind him, but making him move out to L.A.. It's worked out for the best because the TBS show is pretty much "Late Night", but this is just getting me to think of what could've been if he had even got a little bit of support from NBC, or if he had gone to ABC or FOX back in 2004.

On the bright side, at least Leno is off of TV...for now.

Stewart is great at interviewing non-celebrities. And his friends. But other actors/directors? He's decent at best.

Colbert is the best at everything, IMO. He's insanely funny. Ridiculously likeable. And he's easily the most well prepared interviewer I can remember.

Don't you believe part of that is due to him being on so late, though?

After night two, and the only big complaint I have is that he needs to extend the monologue by at least five jokes. I think he and his writers are well aware that it's his weak spot, but he's got to try it out at some point. Maybe it's because there isn't much to talk about outside of the Olympics (unless he wants to try and make the Ukraine riots funny), but he has to extend it and not have as many interruptions for gags, especially ones that involve The Roots (at least not yet).

That, and he really needs to stop clapping when he finds something to be hysterical. He doesn't need to help a guest out that much, especially if that guest is Jerry Seinfeld.

Jimmy Fallon's downfall is his lack of edginess. There is zero edge. That's not to say he's not inventive (or, rather, his writers) and occasionally funny.

At the same time, that's what will keep him on the air when his ratings do sink. He's easy on guests which is why he gets the big names. When everyone else says that NBC should start sweating, Hollywood will come to his rescue. But I don't see him rising above Letterman, Kimmel or even Stewart.

I'll turn my opinion around if he has Conan on as a guest.

Not sure what people expected. Fallon has and always will be a safe show. His monologue is weak, he relies on sketches/gags a lot, and he tries too hard to please his guests.

Yep, and I was hoping he'd tone it down a little for the first week. It's an old criticism, but still a valid one.

As for the monologue, I figured after he extended it to 10 jokes at the end of Late Night that it would go up again (12-15) on the Tonight Show to appease Leno fans, rather than scaring them with frightening black people (compared to Ricky Minor and Kevin Eubanks).

I'm glad he's sticking to his guns, but he'll get a talking to, just like they did with Conan.

Ratings are hard to decipher right now. He has Olympic lead-ins, but the show starts at midnight till Friday. Conan had no Olympic support and started in June.

I'm really pulling for Seth Meyers. I feel like I'm guaranteed disappointment though.
