Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (4/20-21)
It's a decent enough opening. With Golden Week coming up, it could reach $15 million or so to get it over $100 million OS.

And after checking Lincoln's international page at BOM, Japan might actually become it's #1 market OS. I was thinking it did a bit better in some areas.

Weekend Ranking (4/20-21)

1 (-) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) DEBUT!
2 (-) Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty ! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) DEBUT!
3 (-) Lincoln (Disney) DEBUT!

4 (1) Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) Week 4
5 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) Week 5
6 (3) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 2
7 (-) Steins; Gate: Fuka Ryoiki no Deja vup (Kadokawa Pictures) DEBUT!
8 (4) Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) Week 2
9 (6) Platinum Data (Toho) Week 6
10 (5) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) Week 7

Detective Conan opens higher than estimates and sets a franchise record in both gross and admissions, opening 6.6% higher than last year's film. It earned a splendid ¥671,548,700 ($6.86 million) / 565,914 admissions over the weekend on 344 screens. This opening will allow the film to cruise over ¥3 billion ($32 million) and likely reach ¥3.5 billion ($37 million). I don't know what it is, but this is the year for anime films that's for sure. They just keep breaking records.

It's main audience were people in the 20s (26.6%), followed by 16-19 year olds (22.7%), and finally those in their 40s (16.8%).

Crayon Shin-chan performed very well, too, earning ¥225,337,650 ($2.29 million) / 199,993 admissions over the weekend on 324 screens. Last year's film was the first in several years to miss the ¥1 billion ($11 million) milestone, but this year's film should have little trouble getting back there.

Lincoln had to settle for third place taking in ¥162,894,000 ($1.67 million) / 137,546 admissions over the 2-day weekend on 334 screens. As expected, it skewed quite old with an avg. ticket price below ¥1,200.

Steins Gate delivered a mighty impressive opening in seventh place on only 18 screens earning ¥86,822,800 ($886,000) / 57,334 admissions. That gives it a huge 2-Day PSA of ¥4.82 million ($49,000).

¥100 million ↑

And Detective Conan delivers the 3rd biggest opening of the year, making the Top 5 openings in the past 6 months all anime films. There are no major live-action films this year (I believe only A Midsummer's Equation could open to ¥500 million), imported or local, so anime films will continue to dominate 2013. Pacific Rim is looking more and more likely to be delayed until Fall/Winter in the market. Still no release date, markting, trailer, etc.

¥1 billion

-Doraemon (M34) took a hit as it always does this time of year and probably isn't going to reach ¥4 billion. Not that it matters, it's doing over 3.5 million admissions and is already the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
-Wreck-It Ralph and Dragon Ball Z (M14) continue the steady path towards ¥3 billion.
-Platinum Data will soon be the first local live-action film to exceed 2 million admissions this year.
-Les Miserables is still playing at 50 theaters and seems likely to play through the Golden Week holidays coming up. It's been a long time since a film has been tracking this long (I think only Ponyo, and maybe Avatar, were the last films to hit their 5th month in tracking).

Losing:

Golden Week is only 5 days away, and studios have packed this weekend with 6 wide-openers (Thomas & Friends is just shy of going wide) to prepare for it this year. Most of the holdovers are seeing some severe showing decreases because of it.

Iron Man 3 (Paramount), Library Wars (Toho), Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.), and Kamen Rider (Toei) will all debut to good-to-great numbers, but can they dethrone Detective Conan in his second weekend following his franchise record opening?

Straw of Shield (Warner Bros.) [324]
Library Wars (Toho) [311]
Kamen Rider × Super Sentai × Space Sheriff: Super Hero Taisen Z (Toei) [289]

Iron Man 3, Shield of Straw, and Killing Them Softly are opening on Friday.

Warner Bros. has a lot of confidence in Shield of Straw. The film has a good plot and a strong cast and might end up their top grossing film this year (since Pacific Rim's release is still unknown). Let's see if their plan of exiting as an exhibitor in the market to focus on distributing local films pays off.

IM2 made only 12.8 in Japan, you think Im3 can improve on that to 20 or so million?

Iron Man 2 made more than that. BOM undertracks most films in the market.

Iron Man 2 grossed ¥1.2 billion (~$13.9 million) released outside of any holidays. I see Iron Man 3 grossing between ¥2-3 billion ($22-32 million) with the Golden Week boost next week.

Weekend Forecast (4/27-28)

ImageImageImageImage

1 (1) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥415 million ($4.3 million) Week 2
2 (-) Iron Man 3 (Disney) ¥380 million ($3.9 million) DEBUT! [324 theaters]
3 (-) Library Wars (Toho) ¥360 million ($3.7 million) DEBUT! [311 theaters]
4 (-) Kamen Rider x Super Sentei x Space Sheriff: Super Hero Z (Toei) ¥325 million ($3.3 million) DEBUT! [289 theaters]
5 (-) A Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.) ¥290 million ($3.0 million) DEBUT! [324 theaters]

6 (2) Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥150 million ($1.6 million) Week 2
7 (3) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥95 million ($1.0 million) Week 5
8 (-) The Last Stand (Shochiku) ¥80 million ($820,000) DEBUT! [266 theaters]
9 (5) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥65 million ($665,000) Week 6
10 (7) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥55 million ($560,000) Week 3

Now THIS is a crowded weekend and should be one of the biggest of the year. It's unusual to see so many major films opening so close, or in this case, against each other outside of July/August. No one was willing to budge from having that Golden Week (4/29-5/5) boost.

Detective Conan I believe has the slight edge since it's unlikely to earn less than ¥400 million in it's second weekend and may push ¥450 million, and ¥400/450 million will be a difficult number for the openers to reach. It's not impossible, though, three/four of them have potential to open over the mark.

Iron Man 3 will open similarly as The Dark Knight Rises last year I believe, giving it about a 40/45% increase over Iron Man 2's opening weekend.

Library Wars is generating solid buzz, opening in 300+ theaters, directed by Shinsuke Sato (Gantz), plus it has Toho behind it. Not to mention the fans of the novel/anime. It's success is pretty certain.

Kamen Rider is pretty easy to predict since the films typically open somewhere between ¥300-400 million three times a year.

A Shield of Straw is probably the biggest wildcard this weekend. Besides Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin which have strong fanbases, I don't recall any notable local live-action films Warner Bros. have released. They are however giving it a very wide release, it's ranking high on all online sites, and has a favorable cast.

Saturday Estimates (4/27)

1 Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥191 million ($2.0 million) Week 2
2 Iron Man 3 (Disney) ¥173 million ($1.8 million) DEBUT!
3 Kamen Rider x Super Sentei x Space Sheriff: Super Hero Z (Toei) ¥133 million ($1.4 million) DEBUT!
4 Library Wars (Toho) ¥116 million ($1.2 million) DEBUT!
5 A Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.) ¥94 million ($1.0 million) DEBUT!

6 Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toei) ¥81 million ($825,000) Week 2
7 Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥44 million ($450,000) Week 5
8 The Last Stand (Shochiku) ¥35 million ($360,000) DEBUT!
9 Lincoln (Disney) ¥33 million ($340,000) Week 2
10 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥20 million ($210,000) Week 6
11 We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥20 million ($205,000) Week 3
12 Steins: Gate: Fuka Ryoiki no Deja vu (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥19 million ($200,000) Week 2
13 Killing Them Softly (Presido) ¥19 million ($200,000) DEBUT!
14 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥15 million ($155,000) Week 8
15 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥14 million ($145,000) Week 7

Great start for Iron Man 3. That's about a 35% increase over Iron Man 2's opening day, and a 60% increase over Iron Man's opening day. I'm guessing the weekend figure comes in around ¥330-350 million ($3.4-3.6 million). It also opened on Friday, so the 3-day total may break ¥400 million ($4.2 million). And with Golden Week, it should have no trouble reaching ¥2-2.5 billion ($25 millionish) or about double Iron Man 2's total.

Not-so-good for Kamen Rider. The last few films haven't been doing as well as those released between 2008-2011 for some reason. It should still do over ¥250 million for the weekend, though, which will be enough to earn the franchise yet another ¥1 billion success.

Also a little underwhelming for Library Wars and Shield of Straw. Late-April opening aren't always impressive though because of people waiting for Golden Week, so don't count them out. Most people have the entire week off (4/29-5/5), which leaves a lot of space for legs. Golden Week, along with Obon and New Year, can be 3/4x greater than the weekend grosses.

The numbers for the holdovers are very rough estimates, too. Last Saturday was a Movix Cinema Discount Day (tickets half-off). Normally using a 10% figure to account for these days has been fairly reliable in the past, which is how the estimates above came about.

Reminds me of Chinese New Year the past 2 years. The holidays fell on Mon-Wed so folks usually took some vacation days to get 1 week or even 2 weeks off.

Is Golden Week the biggest week of the year?

It depends on the films released before or during the week. Normally, Obon Festival (Mid-August) is the strongest since there's usually a couple big films released a week before it, and then all the holdover blockbusters from July are still doing big numbers.

I'd rank them: Obon Festival > New Year > Golden Week.

I only put Golden Week last because there aren't as many big films in release in late April/early May as there usually are in August and December. These three weeks are far and away bigger than any others in the year.

I don't think weekend estimates will come out this week because of Golden Week beginning today (Monday) with Showa Day. They're usually out by now. Official numbers in the morning will also be delayed I'm sure.

I was following part of Sunday's business though and every film was doing much better than on Saturday, so I'm expecting some great numbers when they're released.

Detective Conan was very strong yesterday and will definitely end up north of ¥400 million with perhaps ¥425 million ($4.4 million) in it's second weekend. And the openers: Iron Man 3 probably came in with ¥380 million ($3.9/4.0 million) for the weekend and a 3-day total around ¥500 million ($5.0/5.1 million), Both Library Wars and Kamen Rider likely came near ¥300 million ($3.1/3.2 million), and Shield of Straw was doing particularly well yesterday and I think it'll see ¥250 million ($2.6 million).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Upcoming Release Schedule (May-Aug)
Iron Man 3 earned an impressive ¥533,040,000 ($5.45 million) on 357,058 admissions over it's first three days in release on 534 screens (268 3D, 266 3D). This beats Iron Man 2's Fri-Sun by 55%. I believe it has a strong chance of hitting ¥3 billion ($30-35 million) now with Golden Week, which actually won't be far from The Avengers (¥3.61 billion).

The avg. ticket prices was quite high (it usually takes 400,000+ admissions to do over ¥500 million), meaning the 3D share likely topped 65%.

Since Monday was the first of five holidays this week, weekend estimates/actuals have been delayed, though 3-day estimates (Sat-Mon) have been released and I'll post them shortly. Most films were flat or saw increase over Sunday yesterday.

Saturday-Monday Estimates

1 Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥633 million ($6.47 million) Week 2
2 Iron Man 3 (Disney) ¥619 million ($6.32 million) DEBUT!
3 Library Wars (Toho) ¥367 million ($3.75 million) DEBUT!
4 Kamen Rider x Super Sentai x Space Sheriff (Toei) ¥346 million ($3.54 million) DEBUT!
5 Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.) ¥309 million ($3.16 million) DEBUT!

6 Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥246 million ($2.52 million) Week 2
7 Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥126 million ($1.29 million) Week 5
8 Lincoln (Disney) ¥118 million ($1.21 million) Week 2
9 The Last Stand (Shochiku) ¥105 million ($1.08 million) DEBUT!
10 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥78 million ($800,000) Week 8

Iron Man 3 should be near ¥750 million ($7.7 million) after four days now. That's nearly as much as Iron Man's total already and 2/3 of the way towards Iron Man 2's total gross, which it will pass before Friday I bet.

Monday (Showa Day) Increases/Decreases from Sunday:
Doraemon (+40%)
Crayon Shin-chan (+25%)
Detective Conan (+23%)
Shield of Straw (+8%)
Library Wars (+4%)
Dragonball Z (+3%)
Lincoln (-1%)
Iron Man 3 (-3%)
The Last Stand (-8%)
Kamen Rider (-10%)

Showa Day is the first of five national holidays this week.

The Last Stand did well. I'm glad it was able to make $1m in a market that is saturated with Japanese films and the release of mega-blockbuster, Iron Man 3. Hopefully it finishes with around $4m. It's a good sign for Bullet to the Head on June 1, although I expect that to open to less, obviously.

Weekend Ranking (4/27-28)

1 (1) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) Week 2
2 (-) Iron Man 3 (Disney) DEBUT!
3 (-) Kamen Rider x Super Sentai x Space Sheriff (Toei) DEBUT!
4 (-) Library Wars (Toho) DEBUT!
5 (-) Shield of Straw (Warner Bros.) DEBUT!

6 (2) Crayon Shin-chan: Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) Week 2
7 (3) Lincoln (Disney) Week 2
8 (4) Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) Week 5
9 (-) The Last Stand (Shochiku) DEBUT!
10 (6) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 3

Detective Conan defends his #1 spot from the onslaught of Golden Week hopefuls, and has already exceeded ¥1.5 billion ($17 million) as of Monday, it's 10th day in release.

Iron Man 3 did splendid over the weekend earning ¥414,675,650 ($4.26 million) with 273,766 admissions on 535 screens. The opening bests Iron Man 2's by 57%.

Kamen Rider has one of the franchises lowest openings since the mid-2000s, taking in just ¥233,504,650 ($2.40 million) with 201,006 admissions on 289 screens.

Library Wars did so-so weekend business on 311 screens grossing ¥216,812,800 ($2.23 million) with 164,178 admissions.

Shield of Straw did modest numbers for Warner Bros., earning ¥186,928,400 ($1.92 million) with 145,148 admissions over the weekend on 325 screens. This is actually Warner Bros. second best opening this year, but not nearly good enough to avoid having one of their worst years ever.

Except for Iron Man 3, openings this weekend were pretty mediocre. Golden Week did begin on Monday, and many wait until then to go to the movies, so let's see how this week's numbers play out.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week Begins (4/29-5/5)
Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo was released on Blu-Ray/DVD last week (4/24) and broke some records:

It moved 357,000 Blu-rays beating the previous first week sales record of 351,000 for Michael Jackson's This Is It (the distant third place belongs to Avatar which sold 198,000 copies in it's first week).

Blu-ray sales totaled a whopping ¥2.21 billion ($23 million) for the first week. In addition to the Blu-ray sales, the film sold 283,000 DVDs for sales totaling ¥1.72 billion ($18 million) in the first week. Overall, the film sold 640,000 copies with sales totaling ¥3.93 billion ($41 million) the first week. Blu-rays/DVDs are very expensive in Japan (DVDs are around $50/60, and Blu-rays are $80/90)... The film did fall short of Evangelion 2.0's all-time first week sales record of 800,000 copies, though.

Also noted in the article is that My Neighbor Totoro, having been on the sales chart since it was released on DVD on Sept. 28, 2001, became only the 4th DVD in history to earn over ¥10 billion in sales with ¥10.01 billion (impossible to get an accurate USD total given it spans 12 years, but currently that'd be about $110 million) and the first since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

DVDs with sales exceeding ¥10 billion (~$100 million+)
Spirited Away (released 7/19/2002)
Howl's Moving Castle (released 12/29/2005)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (released 6/11/2007)
My Neighbor Totoro (released 9/28/2001)

¥1 billion

Biggest 9-day total ever for a Detective Conan film. A final total ¥3.5-4 billion ($37-42 million) is looking pretty good (¥3.6 billion is needed to become the top grossing film in the franchise). And while Wreck-It Ralph saw a rough weekend it's still on course to achieving ¥3 billion, as is Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods.
