Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (4/13-14)
Yeah, unless it's a very special case, you won't see animated movies released or do well in the months of January, February, May, June (late June sometimes), September, October, and November (late Nov. sometimes). In fact, this is true for most films. Legs are always the weakest in these months.
March (Spring Break), April (Golden Week), July (Summer Vacation), August (Obon Week), and December (New Year) are the five strongest months of the year having the most holidays or longest breaks.
The longest break for students is Summer vacation which is generally 5/6 weeks (mid-July to late-August). This is why July/August is always packed with major releases every week.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (4/13-14)
Japanese School Year (Approx.): Apr. 7 - July 20 (1st Semester) July 21 - Aug. 31 (Summer Vacation) Sept. 1 - Dec. 25 (2nd Semester) Dec. 26 - Jan. 7 (Winter Break/New Year) Jan. 8 - Mar. 25 (3rd Semester) Mar. 26 - Apr. 6 (Spring Break)
Overall, students attend school around 250 days a year. By comparison, students in the U.S attend school around 180 days a year. This is probably why Japan has a 100% literacy rate, the highest in the world (and unfortunately a very high suicide rate, too).
Kindergarten: Age 3-6 Elementary: Age 6-12 Junior High/Lower Secondary School: Age 12-15 High School/Upper Secondary School: Age 15-18 University is then very diverse.
All High Schools require entrance exams, and many Junior High Schools require entrance exams, too. And even though both are secondary schooling, nearly 100% of students enroll.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (4/13-14)
And I forgot to mention it in the Weekend Ranking post that Wreck-It Ralph exceeded 2 million admissions this past weekend, making it the fastest Disney animated film (non-Pixar) to reach the mark.
After 23 days, Ralph has earned ¥2,464,772,650 ($27 million) / 2,037,259 admissions.
Dinosaur was the previous quickest Disney animated film to reach 2 million admissions doing it in 24 days, 13 years ago.

I'm surprised CZ12 did so well considering the China-Japan relations at the moment. I guess the Japanese don't dislike the Chinese as much as vice-versa.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (4/20-21)
Weekend Forecast (4/20-21)1 (-) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥590 million ($6.1 million) DEBUT! [334 theaters] 2 (-) Lincoln (Disney) ¥220 million ($2.3 million) DEBUT! [331 theaters] 3 (-) Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥200 million ($2.1 million) DEBUT! [323 theaters]4 (1) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥140 million ($1.5 million) Week 4 5 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥125 million ($1.3 million) Week 5 6 (3) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥75 million ($770,000) Week 2 7 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥65 million ($665,000) Week 6 8 (5) Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥60 million ($615,000) Week 2 9 (7) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥50 million ($510,000) Week 5 10 (6) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadet Museum (Toho) ¥40 million ($410,000) Week 7 The sixteenth Detective Conan film will have no problem opening on top once again this year and will deliver one of the bigger openings of the year (again). And with the way anime films have been breaking long-standing franchise records for the past year, I won't be surprised if it opens over ¥600 million. Lincoln looks poised to do respectable numbers. Anything with Spielberg's name attached to it still attracts many in the market. And Crayon Shin-chan will open with his usual annual numbers around ¥200 million. This year's film is the 21st theatrical release in the franchise. A darkhorse this weekend is the opening of the Steins; Gate film. It's only playing in 18 theaters, but that doesn't mean it can't debut in the Top 10. Projected Totals (¥1 billion+) after Sunday Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum - ¥3.8 billion ($41 million) Wreck-It Ralph - ¥2.7 billion ($29 million) Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods - ¥2.5 billion ($27 million) Platinum Data - ¥2.4 billion ($26 million) Aibou Series: X-Day - ¥1.2 billion ($13 million)

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (4/20-21)
Saturday Estimates (4/20)
1 Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥284 million ($3.0 million), 0, DEBUT! 2 Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥85 million ($870,000), 0, DEBUT! 3 Lincoln (Disney) ¥83 million ($850,000), 0, DEBUT! 4 Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥81 million ($825,000), -31%, Week 4 5 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥67 million ($685,000), -20%, Week 5 6 We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥46 million ($470,000), -18%, Week 2 7 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥34 million ($345,000), -28%, Week 6 8 Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥28 million ($285,000), -38%, Week 2 9 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥26 million ($265,000), -35%, Week 5 10 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥24 million ($245,000), -45%, Week 7
Great number for Detective Conan. The opening day estimate is 5% higher than the 2011 film, and 12% lower than last year's film (last year's film opened on a Movix Cinema discount day, however). It should be able to clear ¥550 million (about $6 million) and 450,000 admissions for the weekend. I made a mistake in the weekend forecast saying that this is the 16th Detective Conan film when it's actually the 17th.
Crayon-Shin chan and Lincoln are in a close race for the #2 spot on track for ¥175-¥200 million ($2 million). Shin-chan retained 99% of it's audience last year, and Lincoln sold 7% more tickets than Flight on opening day last month.

Re: Japan Box Office: Saturday Estimates (4/20)
Yeah, nearly 2 years ago. It was the top grossing Japanese film in 2011, but disappointed by failing to reach the ¥5 billion mark (it earned ¥4.46 billion or $57 million). Critically, it was much better received than Goro Miyazaki's first film, Tales from Earthsea, though. He's currently working on his third unknown project that is supposed to be ready in 2015.

His father, Hayao Miyazaki, is releasing The Wind Rises on July 20th. It's his first film since 2008's Ponyo.

There's two of them?!
You just hear "Miyazaki" and presume it's the same person. Who is the famous one? Like, which one did Spirited Away?
So, I guess The Wind Rises is going to be huge..

Re: Japan Box Office: Saturday Estimates (4/20)
Hayao Miyazaki is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and has directed their biggest hits like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Ponyo. He's most known overseas for directing these films, but in fact, his earlier films My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso are more popular in Japan. Totoro and Nausicaa have been on the Top 50 DVD sales charts for over a decade or something now.
The Wind Rises will be the biggest film released this year by a comfortable margin. It should be able to do over 10 million admissions and exceed the ¥10 billion mark. No film has actually managed to gross ¥10 billion since 2010.
Goro Miyazaki has only directed two films. His debut film, Tales from Earthsea in 2006 was a box-office success, but is regarded as Ghibli's weakest film. His second film, From Up on Poppy Hill in 2011 suffered at the box-office because of this, but was still a decent hit and was much better received than his first film.

I suspect even Goro's movies are more loved/successful than most Hollywood movies released in Japan. The Top 50 DVD sales chart, where can I find this? and does it have DVDs sold or just a chart position?

Oricon has the Top 20 Ranking for non-subscribers, and more rankings with sales figures if you're a paying subscriber. http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/dg/w/2013-04-22/Some sites list where animated films rank, and My Neighbor Totoro is currently in it's 590th week on the list, while Kiki's Delivery Service has been on the chart for 529 weeks.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (4/20-21)
Weekend Estimates (4/20-21)1 (-) Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho) ¥641 million ($6.6 million), 0, DEBUT! 2 (-) Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! Gourmet Survival Class (Toho) ¥217 million ($2.2 million), 0, DEBUT! 3 (-) Lincoln (Disney) ¥171 million ($1.8 million), 0, DEBUT!4 (1) Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥145 million ($1.5 million), -36%, Week 4 5 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥104 million ($1.1 million), -38%, Week 5 6 (3) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥72 million ($735,000), -37%, Week 2 7 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥53 million ($540,000), -43%, Week 6 8 (5) Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥48 million ($485,000), -47%, Week 2 9 (6) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥44 million ($450,000), -50%, Week 7 10 (7) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥42 million ($430,000), -48%, Week 5 Well, well. If this estimate holds, the 17th Detective Conan film just set a franchise opening record. Literally ever major anime film released since November have been breaking franchise records on opening weekend and in total gross. This year's film will have no problem earning over ¥3 billion ($35 million) again. This also marks the 7th-consecutive weekend an animated film has been #1 at the box-office, and the 12th time out of the past 18 weekends. Even Crayon Shin-chan is estimated to have opened a bit higher than it normally does, though it's short of 2010's franchise record of ¥270 million. Overall, Sunday was a strong day for the openers, but a relatively weak day for the holdovers when compared to Saturday.

It opened on Friday, so that'll be the 3-day total.
