Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking / OW Chart Updated
With Doraemon officially becoming the most-attended movie franchise in history this past weekend, here is a look at other top movie franchises:

Most-Attended Movie Franchises

100.05 million :: Doraemon [34 Films], 1980-
99.25 million :: Godzilla [28 Films], 1954-2004(?)
77.35 million :: Harry Potter [8 Films], 2001-2011
70-75 million :: Otoko wa Tsurai yo [48 Films], 1969-1995
63.74 million :: Pokemon [15 Films], 1998-
34.36 million :: Detective Conan [16 Films], 1997-
32.10 million :: Star Wars [6 Films], 1978-

30.90 million :: Bayside Shakedown [4 Films], 1998-2012
*Ongoing franchise

I don't know if the new Godzilla film will count or not. Toho is taking part in the production this time (so it shouldn't be a disaster like the 1998 film), so maybe?

And Otoko wa Tsurai yo is an approximate number.

The film franchise ran from 1969-1995 (ending after Kiyoshi Atsumi's death), spawning two theaterical releases a year until the late 80s/early 90s with one film per year (Kiyoshi's declining health). I have no data for any film before 1980 (exactly half of the 48 count), but the 24 films from 1980-1995 always grossed about the same ¥1.5-2 billion for about 1.4-1.7 million admissions every film. That's about 37/38 million or so admissions from just 24 films, and I figure given how consistent the franchise was that the other 24 films released before 1980 probably did similar figures as well for 70/75 million total admissions or about.

I'll start researching the Kamen Rider franchise sometime this year to see where it may be, too. I know it's definitely getting up there if it's not already over 30 million. That franchise has been seeing one or two theatrical releases almost every year since 1971 and each film since the early 2000s has been doing about 1.3-1.4 million admissions. The franchise sees it's 44th theatrical release next month.

I can't believe they are still making Doraemon, Detective Conan, and Pokemon every year. Their popularity just isn't going to wane.

Yeah, they'll keep going for a long, long time. The 3 films are basically annual events for audiences in Japan. Doraemon always opens in March before Spring Break (Mar. 20-April 7), Detective Conan always opens mid-April before Golden Week (April 29-May 5), and Pokemon always opens mid-July before Summer Vacation (July 20-Aug. 31).

Combined, they always earn at least ¥10 billion ($110 million+) every year for Toho. That figure is usually higher, too. Toho has been attempting to get a fourth annual anime film franchise started for the last remaining break of the year (New Year), but haven't been successful yet.

Each of the TV animes still remain popular as well running almost year-round every week.

-The first Doraemon anime ran in 1973 but was unsuccessful at adapting the manga and ended after just 26 episodes. The second Doraemon anime however was very popular and ran from 1979-2005, ending after 1,787 episodes. The current anime then began in 2005 and sees an average household rating around 11% each week. I believe it's on Season 9 and episode 313.

-The Detective Conan anime has been running continuously since 1996 and is currently on Season 22 and episode 694. In recent years, the anime has been averaging about 9.5%. Conan also has a solid manga (began in 1994) fanbase, too, with each volume selling around 500,00 copies. It's up to volume 78.

-And the Pokemon anime has also been running continuously since 1997 and is currently on Season 17 and episode 778. The TV ratings differ by season but generally averages around 6/7%. The anime isn't as popular as Doraemon or Detective Conan, but it has a very large gaming community that often propels it's movies above the other two each year.

One Piece will last at least another 10-15 years. Eiichiro Oda, the creator, said the manga had reached it's half-way point in 2010/2011 and it's been running since 1997. In that time, it has become the best-selling manga of all-time (passing Dragon Ball in 2010) with over 280 million copies sold. The anime is also popular, averaging about 11% in the TV ratings. The One Piece anime is currently in it's 15th Season and Episode 590. The movie franchise has 12 films so far. Only movies 10 and 12 reached blockbuster status with Eiichiro Oda working on the production of the two films. The most recent film, Film Z, was released this past December and delivered the biggest opening weekend in over 5 years (beating HP7.2) and claimed the all-time opening weekend admissions record for a local film, too.

Naruto should be coming to a close in the near future. It's believed to be close to it's final story arc and may end in 5 or so years. Naruto is more popular in manga form where it is the 5th best-selling manga ever with over 100 million copies sold in Japan since 1999. The original anime was quite popular running for 5 Seasons and 220 Episodes. The second anime, Shippuden, has been running for 13 Seasons and 310 Episodes now but with lower ratings around just 3%. The franchise has 9 films (3 based on the original series, and 6 on Shippuden). The films have done moderately well, but none have done more than ¥1.5 billion.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that either animes or future films won't be released once the mangas conclude.

Thanks for the update. As for the anime I already know cause I am watching both of them currently ;)
I was more interested in the movies, specially after the anime/manga ends. Most of the movies are not concerned with the main story (they just use the main characters and introduce new ones) so wanted to check if there is a trend to continue movies after such HUGE anime/manga series.

Wednesday Estimates (Spring Break - Ladies Day)
Rank / Film / Wed. Estimate / % change from Sunday / Day in Release

1 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥196 million ($2.08 million), +37%, Day 19 [344 theaters]
2 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥186 million ($1.98 million), +10%, Day 5 [313 theaters]
3 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥91 million ($970,000), -24%, Day 12 [310 theaters]
4 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥62 million ($660,000), -40%, Day 5 [198 theaters]
5 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥52 million ($555,000), +6%, Day 20 [329 theaters]
6 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥38 million ($405,000), -33%, Day 12 [175 theaters]
7 Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥32 million ($340,000), -30%, Day 6 [314 theaters]
8 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥24 million ($255,000), +4%, Day 12 [232 theaters]
9 My Friendship Diary (Showgate) ¥20 million ($215,000), -10%, Day 5 [180 theaters]
10 Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥18 million ($190,000), +11%, Day 5 [197 theaters]

Great gains for family/kid films as expected this week and we may see some increases this upcoming weekend, too. Ralph and Doraemon will be battling it out probably for 2nd place with the opening of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods likely to debut on top. Akira Toriyama, the creator, is working on the production this time and fans are greatly anticipating what really comes after the Majin Buu Saga and Super Saiyan 3 since Dragon Ball GT wasn't based on the manga nor created by Akira Toriyama.

There's probably a number of old Dragon Ball Z fans here so I wanted to share some details of the upcoming film:

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

[TRAILER]

Few Notes:
-Akira Toriyama, the series creator, worked on the film's production including art design and screenwriting details. This is the first time he's ever been deeply involved in the anime/films.
-Story takes place after the Majin Buu Saga, and will introduce "Super Saiyan God" Goku - the final form of the Super Saiyan (SS4, and all of Dragon Ball GT wasn't canon nor created by Akira Toriyama).
-First Dragon Ball Z film to be released in 17 years.
-New characters includes Bills (God of Destruction) and Whis (Martial Arts Master).

*All USD totals calculated using the avg. exchange rate of the first three months of each film's release, so they could slightly differ.

The only time the exchange rate was more favorable than it is now was in mid-1995, so achieving the best results in the franchise in USD shouldn't a problem for the new film. Distributor Toei is expecting as much as ¥3 billion ($35 million), but as always I caution distributor reports in Japan because they like to hype things a but too much. We'll see though, anime films have been booming recently (Eva, One Piece, Hunter X Hunter, etc).

Isn't Japan attempting to devalue its currency to fight deflation? Yen should be dropping against the US Dollar as a result. That would make Japan's domestic box office measured in USD appear lower than it is now.

Isn't Japan attempting to devalue its currency to fight deflation? Yen should be dropping against the US Dollar as a result. That would make Japan's domestic box office measured in USD appear lower than it is now.

Yeah, the yen has been weakening since Abe was elected PM in December, and the plan is to get it over 100 by the Summer and try to lock it in around 105/110. They don't want to devalue it anymore than that. So far he's done a good job towards his goal by getting it over 90 since the beginning of the year, but currently it's at 94 which is still the strongest it's been (by monthly avg) since 1995.

If all goes well and the yen ends up over 100 in the next few months, USD box-office totals in Japan aren't going to look very pretty next to 2009-2012's USD totals (and of course it has to happen in a year a Hayao Miyazaki film is being released again LOL). Last year 5 billion yen would have been over $60 million, currently it's just over $50 million, and in a few months if a film makes 5 billion yen it may only be $40 million. But it's for the good of the economy, so good luck to them. And a stronger economy could fuel ticket sales, too, so maybe it can possibly boost the box-office as a result.

More films were hitting the now extremely difficult 10 billion yen mark in the early/mid 2000s when the yen was over 100 than they have been in recent years with it below 100 (2009, 2011, and 2012 all even went without a 10 billion yen hit).

Spring Break Weekend!

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods has really strong advance sales, nearing or already over 50% capacity at many usual locations before the first showings begin in a few hours. If things pick up further and wide sell outs begin to occur, I may post comparisons with recent anime hits from the past year.

It won't be approaching Evangelion 3.0 or One Piece Film Z levels (which already sold out nearly half of their weekend showings before opening) from back in November and December, but it's likely to deliver one of the bigger openings of 2013 and continue this recent anime film boom.

Every anime film since last year (March) has been outdoing expectations by a wide, wide margin, and even long-running annual franchise films like Doraemon and Detective Conan that always post similar numbers every year have been breaking out above their usual numbers as of late. Anime films claim the top 4 opening weekends (One Piece > Eva > Doraemon > Hunter X Hunter, and soon to be top 5 I think) and the 2/3 of the highest-grossing films in the past 6 months.

Second place will be close between Doraemon 34 and Wreck-It Ralph. I'm giving the slight edge to Doraemon because I think people who can't get into a Dragon Ball showing will choice it over Ralph, and past films have seen sizable increases this weekend before. Ralph also has potential to increase this weekend, but being in it's second, a small decrease is probably more likely.

And overall, this should be a very strong weekend with possible increases for family/kid films and small drops for most other films going by previous years. Anna Karenina and ParaNorman also open this weekend, but both are in limited release.

Projected Totals (¥1 billion+) after Sunday
-Doraemon 34: ¥3.0 billion ($32 million) after four weeks.
-Platinum Data: ¥1.6 billion ($18 million) after three weeks.
-Oz: ¥1.4 billion ($15 million) after four weeks.
-Wreck-It Ralph: ¥1.1 billion ($12 million) after two weeks.

Surely if it's called "Godzilla" it will count..

Well, the 1998 film isn't included among the 28 films because it's 100% a American film from TriStar Pictures that Toho Co., Ltd. had no part in besides giving TriStar permission to make it. Toho has said it's not the same Godzilla, that they basically just used the name and still license it as such ($$$).

Toho is part of the production of the new film and will have full distribution rights in Japan, so it should be included into the Toho Company series.

Whether Toho likes it or not, the 1998 Godzilla film is the most famous entry in the series and people all think that it's part of the Godzilla franchise. They might as well accept it.

I'm just going by how Toho, who created the character before nearly everyone who made the 1998 film were born and holds all the rights to it, views the film. They don't dismiss the film, and they still call it and license it as "Godzilla", just as a separate creature from the main franchise that isn't included in their 28 film production.

Saturday Estimates (3/30)

Image

Rank / Film / Sat. Est. / % change from last Sat. / Week in Release
1 Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥370 million ($3.9 million), 0, DEBUT! [311 theaters]
2 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥156 million ($1.7 million), -8%, Week 2
3 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥143 million ($1.6 million), +10%, Week 4
4 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥105 million ($1.2 million), -13%, Week 3
5 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥69 million ($740,000), -38%, Week 2
6 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥46 million ($490,000), -20%, Week 3
7 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥45 million ($480,000), -19%, Week 4
8 Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥34 million ($360,000), -29%, Week 2
9 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥19 million ($205,000), -22%, Week 3
10 My Friendship Diary (Showgate) ¥14 million ($150,000), -36%, Week 2
11 Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥11 million ($120,000), -32%, Week 2

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods mirrored Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum's opening day by selling 0.9% more tickets at the usual locations.

This has Dragon Ball Z heading for about 600,000 admissions this weekend, but that number should be closer to 550,000 when accounting for a little more frontloadedness (though it is Spring Break), but with having a higher avg. ticket price will still get it over ¥600 million ($6.5 million) and might come close to Doraemon's huge opening (¥667 million) earlier this month. And an opening of ¥600 million+ makes reaching ¥3 billion ($35 million) and becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise very likely. The 17-year wait and having Akira Toriyama apart of the production for once is definitely paying off.

Ralph and Doraemon are in a close battle for second place. It's too close to call it before Sunday, though Doraemon almost always sees a much stronger Sunday than Saturday, so it's in a stronger position to win (at least in admissions).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Saturday Estimates (DBZ is big)
Toei reports that Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, which is by the way the first domestic IMAX release ever, was tracking at 47.3% of One Piece Film Z's opening day this past December.

http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/movie/2023173/

47.3% sounds low, but One Piece Film Z did break every single opening day and opening weekend record except one (right down to the pta, #&% of sellouts, and individual theater records) for all local films, too.

The figure would put the opening day around ¥360 million ($3.8 million) and ¥650 million ($7 million) for the opening weekend, which is in line with the estimates from earlier this morning, so it doesn't sound like the typical studio hype article. That's without taking into account how the IMAX showings may effect the avg. ticket prices, too.

Toei goes on to say they expect Battle of Gods to exceed ¥3 billion ($35 million), making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise's long history. That last line has been said with nearly every anime film released in the past 12-months. They've all been breaking out above the heights of previous films.

Weekend Estimates (3/30-31)

Image

Rank / Film / Wknd. Est. / % Change / Week in Release
1 (-) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥635 million ($6.8 million), 0, DEBUT! [311 theaters]
2 (1) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥316 million ($3.4 million), -7%, Week 2
3 (2) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥292 million ($3.1 million), +2%, Week 4
4 (3) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥204 million ($2.2 million), -15%, Week 3
5 (4) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥144 million ($1.6 million), -32%, Week 2
6 (5) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥97 million ($1.1 million), -16%, Week 3
7 (6) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥92 million ($980,000), -16%, Week 4
8 (7) Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥66 million ($705,000), -29%, Week 2
9 (8) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥39 million ($415,000), -20%, Week 3
10 (9) My Friendship Diary (Showgate) ¥27 million ($290,000), -40%, Week 2
11 (10) Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥26 million ($270,000), -24%, Week 2

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods sold 89% of the tickets Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum did on opening weekend, which would give it about 530,000 admissions for the weekend and an opening between ¥600-650 million ($6.5-7 million) depending on it's avg. ticket price. This would be a spectacular opening, and the fourth biggest in the past 6 months. I don't know how IMAX will effect the film, being the first local film in IMAX and all, so there could be room for a little more still. The film is likely to stay on top for 3 weeks as well until Detectice Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea opens on 4/20.

Wreck-It Ralph held very well in it's second weekend. I know it's Spring Break week, but the hold is a sure sign WOM is probably matching the excellent reviews the film received.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum appears to be the only film to have seen an increase this weekend, but it's smaller than a number of past films in the franchise that have increased in the double digits before. Still a great fourth weekend number, and the second biggest fourth weekend in the long-running franchise keeping the franchise record in sight and perhaps ¥4 billion ($45 million) in range, too.

Platinum Data held surprisingly well, the best among the live-action films in the Top 11. I think it'll reach ¥2.5 billion ($30 million) now without too much difficultly (watch it collapse post-Spring Break now that I've said that).

Top 5 Opening Weekends (Since October 2012)

¥1.372 billion ($16.7 million) / 1,140,081 :: One Piece Film Z [300]
¥1.133 billion ($14.1 million) / 771,764 :: Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo [223]
¥667.3 million ($7.2 million) / 597,899 :: Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum [353]
¥635.0 million ($6.8 million) / 530,000 :: Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods [311] Est.
¥456.8 million ($5.5 million) / 357,976 :: Hunter X Hunter: The Phantom Rouge [257]

All franchise records, and One Piece and Evangelion broke more than just franchise records, too. One Piece claimed the all-time domestic opening day and weekend record in admissions and USD gross (and overall since 2007), and #&% of weekend sellouts (this record includes imported-releases).

Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea opens in three weeks and will bump Hunter X Hunter out of the Top 5 giving anime films the Top 6 openings.
