I was also about to ask the same question. It is really impressive.

Looks like Ted can still do another weekend in Top 5, assuming there is only one opener next weekend in Top 5 with 2 giant releases this weekend and that DH5 would be close this weekend to Ted.

Are Les Mis and Ted just an accident or does Universal have a strong subdivision in Japan?

I don't know if I'd call it an accident exactly since Les Miserables was expected to do really well (not this well obviously, but still) and Ted was generating so much buzz that they decided to pick it up late last year. Originally, Ted wasn't going to be released in the market until Toho saw how well it did in the U.S. and overseas.

The success of both films definitely has nothing to do with their distributor, Toho-Towa, though. Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) releases all Universal films in Japan, but few really manage to do too well ranging between ¥1 billion and ¥2 billion most of the time. They do however get a breakout like every distributor, and it just so happens they have two of them currently in release.

Les Miserables and Ted have outgrossed all of Toho-Towa's 2012 releases already.

It won't unfortunately because this upcoming weekend sees Platinum Data, Pretty Cure All Stars, and Cloud Atlas opening. These three are guaranteed Top 5 debuts, and Platinum Data will be aiming for Doraemon's weekend crown which I don't quite expect it'll reach but should still be a fairly close second. Last year, Doraemon was on top for 5-consecutive weeks and this year's film opened 20% higher to a franchise record.

I haven't checked theater counts yet, but I'm currently predicting:

1. Doraemon
2. Platinum Data
3. Pretty Cure All Stars
4. Oz
5. Cloud Atlas

How well do you think will Iron Man 3 perform after the surprising success of The Avengers?

I think it'll do well. It is opening during Golden Week and Iron Man 2 did increase over the original to begin with before The Avengers anyway. For now I'm predicting ¥2.5/3 billion ($30-35 million).

Weekend Forecast (03/16-17)

ImageImageImage

1 (1) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥420 million ($4.5 million) Week 2
2 (-) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥380 million ($4.0 million) NEW! [310 theaters]
3 (-) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥195 million ($2.1 million) NEW! [173 theaters]

4 (2) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥185 million ($2.0 million) Week 2
5 (-) Cloud Atlas (Warner Bros.) ¥110 million ($1.2 million) NEW! [138 theaters]
6 (3) Flight (Paramount) ¥70 million ($750,000) Week 3
7 (-) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥60 million ($640,000) NEW! [230 theaters]
8 (4) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥55 million ($585,000) Week 5
9 (5) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥50 million ($535,000) Week 9
10 (6) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥40 million ($425,000) Week 13

Platinum Data is expected to clear ¥300 million at the very least, and might surprise and debut on top but it's doubtful with Doraemon only in it's second weekend. If Platinum Data fails to dethrone Doraemon, then Doraemon may very well stay on top until mid-April since it's always stronger late-March than it is during it's first two weeks in release.

Pretty Cure will do business as usual and likely debut between ¥170-200 million. Only one film in the franchise has broke ¥200 million on opening weekend.

Cloud Atlas is being dumped with that dismal theater count and will be lucky to earn more than ¥100 million.

Projected Totals After Sunday (¥1 billion+)
-Les Miserables: ¥5.55 billion ($62.5 million) after thirteen weeks.
-Ted: ¥3.95 billion ($43.5 million) after nine weeks.
-Die Hard 5: ¥1.9 billion ($22 million) after five weeks.
-Doraemon 33: ¥1.2 billion ($14 million) after two weeks.

Saturday Estimates (03/16)

1 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥308 million ($3.3 million), 0, Day 1 [310 theaters]
2 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥224 million ($2.4 million), -40%, Day 8
3 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥89 million ($950,000), 0, Day 1 [173 theaters]
4 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥84 million ($890,000), -38%, Day 9
5 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥51 million ($545,000), 0, Day 1 [230 theaters]
6 Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥33 million ($355,000), -25%, Day 57
7 Flight (Paramount) ¥32 million ($340,000), -41%, Day 16
8 A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥25 million ($270,000), -43%, Day 30
9 Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥18 million ($185,000), -41%, Day 85
10 Django Unchained (Sony) ¥14 million ($150,000), -36%, Day 16

Big opening day for Platinum Data, outpacing last year's SPEC: The Movie by 24%. Reviews are mixed and it's expected to see a sizable dip today, but opening close to or over ¥500 million ($5.5 million) is looking pretty good. And an opening of ¥500 million would likely result in a total of ¥3 billion ($35 million). I'm happy that it's performing better than expected and will provide a nice boost to the Spring box-office now.

Doraemon can still win the weekend, however. The Saturday estimate is good and will give it a second weekend around ¥400-450 million ($4.4-4.8 million). Sunday ticket sales are well ahead of Platinum Data, too, so we could see them switch places.

Pretty Cure retained 91% of the audience of last Spring's film.

Very good for 7 Days of Himawari. I went very conservative on it since Shochiku releases haven't been doing very well for the past year, but this may just reach a respectable ¥100 million ($1.1 million) opening.

Now... Cloud Atlas is abysmal. I knew it wasn't going to do well with it's very poor theater count but figured it could at least manage a Top 10 debut with Warner Bros. behind and starring Tom Hanks. But it won't even debut in the Top 10 with an estimated day of ¥12 million ($130,000) in 138 theaters. This may also be a result of Warner Bros. exiting Japan as an exhibitor sometime this month, too, to begin focus on distributor local films instead.

A better test to see how Warner Bros. films will do without them in the market will be Jack the Giant Slayer next week.

1 (1) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥426 million ($4.53 million), -36%, Week 2
2 (-) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥389 million ($4.13 million), 0, NEW! [310 theaters]
3 (-) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥191 million ($2.03 million), 0, NEW! [173 theaters]
4 (2) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥175 million ($1.85 million), -35%, Week 2
5 (-) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥104 million ($1.11 million), 0, NEW! [230 theaters]
6 (5) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥63 million ($675,000), -29%, Week 9
7 (3) Flight (Paramount) ¥62 million ($660,000), -42%, Week 3
8 (4) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥46 million ($490,000), -49%, Week 5
9 (6) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥35 million ($370,000), -40%, Week 13
10 (8) Django Unchained (Sony) ¥28 million ($295,000), -36%, Week 3
11 (7) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) ¥22 million (235,000), -50%, Week 4
12 (-) Cloud Atlas (Warner Bros.) ¥21 million ($230,000), 0, NEW! [138 theaters]

Interesting turn of events.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum looks to have claimed it's second week on top, and with this victory, it's incredibly likely to remain at the top until mid-April. Last year's film was #1 for 5-consecutive weeks, and this year's film will probably do the same.

Platinum Data had some confusing "data" for the weekend. When using 20 theaters of the usual locations primary in urban areas, it would handily win the weekend with over ¥450 million ($5 million). But when you use all the usual locations (92 theaters), it sees a sharp decline to under ¥400 million. Normally, there isn't such a significant difference in the samples, so I'd take the weekend estimate very cautiously. I don't think it was able to overcome Doraemon for the #1 spot, however, regardless of what tomorrow's actuals are.

And either way, its a good opening ahead of Toho's past March live-action tentpoles like Liar Game.

Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 practically did the same numbers as last Spring's film, attracting 98% of the same ticket sales.

Unless the avg. ticket price for 7 Days of Himawari is extremely low, Shochiku finally gets themselves another ¥100 million opener.

Cloud Atlas, well, couldn't really have done any worse than this. It was a Friday opener, so the 3-day is probably ¥30 million ($325,000) or so.

Weekend Cinema Chain Ranking (03/16-17)

11) n/a - n/a - 10th - n/a :: Brain Man (Toho) Week 6

New format.

Besides losing at Toho to Platinum Data, Doraemon almost swept the theater chains again.

Image
Shimajiro makes a surprise debut. The theater count is so low that an estimate wasn't available. Debuting in Toho's Top 10 actually isn't that surprising considering it's one of their video division films, but the 9th place ranking at Shikoku suggests it may end up in the overall Top 10 in the morning.

Cloud Atlas misses debuting at any major cinema chain.

Platinum Data couldn't quite manage to dethrone Doraemon, but still debuted to a strong ¥400,496,000 ($4.26 million) with 305,743 admissions on 310 screens. Reviews are pretty bad, so even with Spring Break, I don't expect legs to be very good and only see ¥2 billion ($25 million) or slightly more right now.

Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 managed to increase over last Spring's film by 0.6%. It's not much, but it's still an increase Toei will gladly take considering last year's film managed to reach ¥1 billion (¥1.03 billion). New Stage 2 opened on 174 screens to ¥196,577,300 ($2.09 million) with 175,930 admissions.

Image
7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies debuted on 232 screens to ¥84,338,400 ($895,000) with 73,708 admissions. Unfortunately it missed a ¥100 million opening due to a low avg. ticket price (1,144), though with Spring Break it shouldn't have any problem reaching ¥500 million ($5.5 million) for Shochiku.

Image
Cloud Atlas didn't rank at any of the major cinema chains (however, some only report their Top 5) but it does rank 9th overall. Playing on 138 screens, the film earned ¥42,806,300 ($455,000) with 33,701 admissions. This is practically double what estimates were, but it's still a terrible debut.

-Tracking ended for Life of Pi, Tokyo Family, and Jack Reacher this week.

Tracking ended pretty early for that one, so I expect it'll see a solid increase and rise to ¥1.15/1.2 billion whenever official estimates or actuals are released this year.

¥342,792,554 / ¥974,508,827 --> ¥3.16 billion (3.24x) :: Doraemon: Nobita's Great Battle of the Mermaid King (2010)
¥340,619,257 / ¥950,142,120 --> ¥3.37 billion (3.55x) :: Doraemon: Nobita and the Green Giant Legend (2008)
¥372,134,755 / ¥896,164,447 --> ¥3.28 billion (3.66x) :: Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur (2006)
¥315,214,240 / ¥822,978,200 --> ¥3.05 billion (3.71x) :: Doraemon: Nobita's Wannyan Space Time Odyssey (2004)
¥260,821,867 / ¥697,884,356 --> ¥2.45 billion (3.51x) :: Doraemon: The New Record of Nobita (2009)
¥160,366,687 / ¥686,382,348 --> ¥2.46 billion (3.58x) :: Doraemon: Nobita and the New Steel Troops (2011)*

*Opened one week before the Tohoku Earthquake

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Musuem barely missed having the biggest second weekend franchise record, but is tracking 15% ahead of last year's film after two weeks.

Doraemon is a consistent movie franchise, one would have to be after over 30 films, with all the recent films receiving similar multipliers. And using the avg. 9-day multiplier (3.5x), this year's film is tracking towards ¥4.3 billion ($47 million). This would be the first film in the franchise to exceed ¥4 billion if it keeps the usual pace, and very likely earn a Top 10 spot for 2013.

It isn't listed on any movie sites meaning not anytime soon (not before Summer). Since Paramount is the distributor, it should eventually see a release though. Maybe in the Fall or Winter.

I'm working on some scheduling updates and just wanted to let you know that Hansel & Gretel is now scheduled for the Fall. My guess will be sometime in September.

11 Cloud Atlas (Warner Bros.) ¥24 million ($255,000), +29%, Day 6

Very strong day. This year's Vernal Equinox Day was even stronger than usual since it landed on a Wednesday (Ladies Day) and a MOVIX discount day (the chain offers 50% ticket discounts).

Congrats to Kid's Police for making the Top 10. :funny: I admit it looks cute and entertaining, and hope it has a good run this Spring. The theme song by Sexy Zone is catchy as hell, too.

[Trailer]

And wowzers at Les Mis. Wednesdays have always been it's biggest day of the week (Ladies Day), but thanks to the National Holiday this Wednesday alone was bigger than this past weekend's gross.
