No time to watch on Sunday?
Why sit in suspense through the countdown, the red carpet and the interminable broadcast itself? LIAM LACEY decides to leak an Academy Awards scenario and be done with it
By LIAM LACEY
Saturday, February 26, 2005 - Page R7
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ ... TopStories
The only burning question at this year's Oscars is this: Will the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pick the sentimental favourite Martin Scorsese and his film, The Aviator?
Or will the 6,000 members give the nod to that other sentimental favourite, Clint Eastwood and his film, Million Dollar Baby?
With feelings running so high, and who knows how many hours of television before the final results are known, I have decided the responsible thing to do is to leak the Oscar results in advance.
Though some minor details may have to be updated for the Monday-morning paper, the 77th Oscars night should go almost exactly like this:
---
Best makeup went to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, best score went to Jan A. P. Kaczmarak for Finding Neverland and best song went to Learn to Be Lonely from The Phantom of the Opera. The final song was performed by Beyoncé in a lavish production number involving male dancers dressed as the Phantom. Josh Groban and Counting Crows performed other nominated songs. The audience applauded the montage of stars who have died in the last year, with particularly enthusiastic ovations for Johnny Carson and Ray Charles.
---
If only that was true

Sunset Boulevard Film 'Probably Announced in the Next Three Months' Says Webber
http://www.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=2352
Interviewed on the BBC Breakfast show, live from Hollywood, where composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is preparing for Sunday night's Oscars, on which he'll accompany Beyonce Knowles on his Oscar-nominated "Learn to Be Lonely" from the Phantom film, he answered some questions about Sunset Boulevard.
Asked what his next film was going to be, and when, he answered that it was Sunset Boulevard and that it would "probably be announced in the next three months." When asked about who would star in it, and if Glenn Close would reprise her role, he said "I don't think that it would be rocket science to guess who'll probably play Norma."
Still no official word, but more confirmation of his most recent answers to those questions which he gave on February 18th on iTV's "This Morning" with guest hosts Gloria Hunniford and co-host Michael Ball. Discussing movie musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked about filming Sunset Boulevard. His response? "There is a plan to do that." When the obvious question of casting came up, Webber avoided answering, but when Glenn Close's name was mentioned by Gloria Hunniford, he did say "I don't know how you could top Glenn, she was fantastic."
Talking to the Phillipine's INQ7.net on February 6th, while promoting the Phantom of the Opera film in which Webber said "Paramount owns the fundamental rights to "Sunset Boulevard" because it was originally a Billy Wilder movie. I spoke to Sherry (Lansing, Paramount head) this morning and it's very clear that they are interested."
In interviews earlier in February with Glenn Close, she confirms that she has spoken to Andrew Lloyd Webber about bringing the show to the big screen and says that she "very much wants the gig."
No official confirmation or word on anyone actually being signed for the film, but if they stick to the probable three month timetable to announce plans, it won't be long.
So maybe late 2005 start production for a late 2006 release?? , musicals are back with Rent and Producers next year and possibly Sunset Boulevard after that.....

Mike Prill Final Predictions and Thoughts on the Season
http://www.oscarwatch.com/Articles/Mprill/
Well ladies and gents, the time has arrived. The biggest night in Hollywood is before us. Can you smell it? Can you feel it in the air? All week Oscar talk has been running rampant through mainstream America. Generally it's just us crazy fanatics that do all the Oscar talk throughout the year, but a week before the big show everyone is talking. The year 2004 was full of good films, not many great ones, but many good ones. In my book, 2004 was a good year for film. As all of you know, Million Dollar Baby was the film that touched my heart the most, and therefore my favorite of the year. I must say though, I think there will also always be a special place in my heart for Hotel Rwanda , if only for its social and political significance. I hope that, as the years go by, an increasing number of people, especially young people will see the film. Finally, although The Aviator was not my favorite film of the year, it is very good, and I hope that it is Marty's year to take home his first trophy. That said, without any further ado, here are my predictions for Sunday night, beginning with the technical and stand alone categories (due to just sheer ignorance on my part, I will not cover Short Film or Documentary Short Subject)...
Art Direction
The Aviator
Finding Neverland
Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events
The Phantom of the Opera*
A Very Long Engagement
Cinematography
The Aviator*
House of Flying Daggers
The Passion of the Christ
The Phantom of the Opera
A Very Long Engagement
Music (Song)
"Accidentally In Love"- Shrek 2*
"Al Otro Lado Del Rio"- The Motorcycle Diaries
"Believe"- The Polar Express
"Learn To Be Lonely"- The Phantom of the Opera
"Look To Your Path (Vois Sur Ton Chemin)"- The Chorus
---
Hmm, Art Direction i think is harder to win than Best Song for Phantom, since both lemony Snickets and Aviator have a lot of things going for them.......whereas the Best Song category is wide open - with Shrek 2, Polar Express and Phantom all possible.....
Best Cinematography is of course, out of the question

MPAA lets 'Palace' push profanity limits
By GABRIEL SNYDER, IAN MOHR
http://www.variety.com/VR1117918509.html
While the decency wars continue to rage in Washington, the MPAAMPAA has okayed the most profane PG-13 pic ever
---
Though the ratings guidelines allow for wide discretion, sources familiar with the ratings process say the number of profanities used often determines ratings.
For instance, one "fuck" will automatically get you a PG-13. Two will usually get you an R, though some films with two F-words have sometimes gone out PG-13. Three or more, as with "Palace," has always been an R.
The appeals board voted 9 to 3 to reverse its original decision. Last year, 12 films appealed their ratings and three were overturned, including "Hotel Rwanda," which had originally been rated R for violence.
The actual ratings guidelines use quantity but provide the board huge loopholes: "More one such expletive must lead the rating board to issue a film an R rating, as must even one of these words used in a sexual context. These films can be rated less severely, however, if by a special vote the rating board feels a lesser rating would more responsibly reflect the opinion of parents."
While the rating board is comprised of parents, the appeals board is drawn from the entertainment industry.

"GOODY BASKETS" - Oscar nominees to go home with wealth of riches
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/ ... 77/1/.html
HOLLYWOOD : Win or lose, Oscar nominees will go home from Sunday's ceremony with tens of thousands of dollars of free gifts, ranging from mink eyelashes to cashmere pyjamas to pampering luxury hotels stays.
Each of the more than 115 nominees for cinema's top prizes, as well as the millionaire stars who will present the statuettes and the performers who will feature in the show, will receive "goody baskets".
---
Last year, the Oscars swag bags had an estimated value of US$100,000 each and contained more than 50 items, including a seven-day cruise and huge television sets.
While Oscars organisers declined to talk about the value and contents of the thank-you gifts, some details have been leaked by companies eager to place their luxurious products with the world's top movie stars.
The likes of best actress nominees Hilary Swank, Annette Bening and Kate Winslet will find Kay Unger cashmere pajamas worth 500 dollars and a set of mink eyelashes in their groaning gift baskets.
The US$600 false lashes come in a red leather case filled with Shu Uemura cosmetics.
Also in the goody bags are a three-night stay for two at a beachside California spa resort worth US$5,900 and a three-night stay for a couple at the Palmetto Bluff resort in South Carolina valued at US$3,600.
Depending in whether they are nominees, presenters and performers, the stars doing turns of stage at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre will also get a US$700 Krups kitchen set including a toaster, electric kettle and a year's supply of coffee and tea.
A dinner party at any the celebrity-friendly Morton's steakhouse in Los Angeles worth US$1,500 in also on the goody bag menu.
The pampered stars will also receive two more holiday packages - a two-night stay New York's plush Carlyle Hotel, worth US$2,300 and another at in the wine country of California's Carmel Valley worth US$2,500.
Nominees for best actress this year who will have to stagger to their limousines under the weight of their Oscar loot are Swank for "Million Dollar Baby", Bening for "Being Julia", Winslet for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," Imelda Staunton for "Vera Drake" and Colombia's Catalina Sandino Moreno for "Maria Full of Grace".
Best supporting actress hopefuls are Australia's Cate Blanchett for "The Aviator", Laura Linney for "Kinsey," Virginia Madsen for "Sideways", Natalie Portman for "Closer" and Sophie Okonedo for "Hotel Rwanda".
Best actor candidates are Jamie Foxx for "Ray," Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Aviator", Clint Eastwood for "Million Dollar Baby," Johnny Depp for "Finding Neverland" and Don Cheadle for "Hotel Rwanda".
This year's Oscar host Chris Rock will also receive one of the baskets, as will presenters who include superstars Barbra Streisand, Pierce Brosnan, Jeremy Irons, Robin Williams, Halle Berry and Charlize Theron.
In addition to the official Oscars goody bags, the acting nominees have already received thousands of dollars worth of other gifts from publicity-savvy companies. - AFP

Emmy Rossum will be one happy girl regardless

Oscar organisers begin countdown
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainmen ... 300621.stm
Preparations for Sunday's Oscar ceremony have begun in Hollywood, with The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby neck and neck in the best film race.
More than 3,300 guests will attend the ceremony at the Kodak Theatre, which will be hosted by comedian Chris Rock.
---
Around a billion people worldwide are expected to watch the ceremony, which will be broadcast with a seven-second time delay to allow censors to cut out any unsuitable content.
"We have the bleep machine ready, but bleeps will be used as needed," producer Gil Cates told reporters. However, he added that he strongly disapproved of the growing tendency to censor live broadcasts on US TV.
He also played down fears that Rock, who is known for using strong language in his stand-up routines, might cause controversy on the night.
---
Meanwhile, organisers have erected a canopy over the red carpet following an outbreak of torrential rain in Los Angeles over the past week.
Cates said the covers would be removed if the threat of wet weather receded.
And details emerged of the contents of this year's gift bags, which are given to nominees and presenters on the night.
This year's bags will include a gift certificate for a luxury beach resort, a pair of mink eyelashes and a kitchen set with a year's supply of tea and coffee.

NPR LISTEN - Movie Songs for Oscar Night
February 26, 2005 · Last year, Annie Lennox walked away with an Academy Award for the best song written for a movie -- in this case, "Into the West" from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. But only the more rabid of Oscar fans (and Rings devotees) are likely to remember that win... proof that some winning movie songs are more memorable than others.
Past nominees for best song include hummable tunes such as "Mrs. Robinson" (The Graduate), "Moon River" (Breakfast at Tiffany's), "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Eminem's "Lose Yourself" (8 Mile). This year's nominees range from choral music to Latin to rock 'n' roll -- but which of these songs will we remember a year from now?
Broadway and opera lyricist Murray Horowitz, who's also director of the American Film Institute Theater in Silver Spring, Md., judges the merits of each of this year's nominees:

Actually, I'm not really planning to win for Actor or anything. I hope to get one of my screenplays (most of which are still fully in my head) to be made into a film.
I've actually thought about starting to write my two favorite screenplays.
