Quote:
The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is part of Nolan's Batman film series and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. Christian Bale reprises the lead role. The film follows Bruce Wayne/Batman (Bale), District Attorney Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart), Assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and Police Commissioner James Gordon (Gary Oldman) and their struggles and journey in combating the new rising threat of a criminal who goes by the name of the "Joker" (Heath Ledger).

Nolan's inspiration for the film was the Joker's comic book debut in 1940, and the 1996 series The Long Halloween, which retold Two-Face's origin. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago, as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. Nolan used an IMAX camera to film some sequences, including the Joker's first appearance in the film. On January 22, 2008, after he had completed filming The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger died from a toxic combination of prescription drugs, leading to intense attention from the press and moviegoing public. Warner Bros. had initially created a viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screen shots of Ledger as the Joker, but after Ledger's death, the studio refocused its promotional campaign.

The film was released on July 16, 2008 in Australia, on July 18, 2008 in North America, and on July 24, 2008 in the United Kingdom. Before its box office debut in North America, record numbers of advance tickets were sold for The Dark Knight. It was greeted with positive reviews upon release, and became only the second film to earn more than $500 million at the North American box office, setting numerous other records in the process. It is also the fifth highest grossing film worldwide, and one of only five films to earn more than $1 billion, worldwide. The film received numerous awards nominations and two Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor for Ledger's performance.

Post Re: The Dark Knight
I really really loved this film. It takes everything from the first film, builds on it and makes it better.
The cast are outstanding. I really hope Ledger is nominated for an Oscar because he definitely deserves to be nominated. He is just pure, twisted, raw chaos. His Joker is funny but also completely frightening, unhinged and intelligent. This is a performance thats sure to be remembered.
Oldman is fantastic in this also. He is such a great actor and he completely shines. One of the best persormances ive seen him give.
Bale is also excellent. He slips in and out of his Batman and 2 x Bruce roles with ease. I thought he was great in Begins but here he is even better.
Hats off to Eckhart too. His angry moments are something else. I was a bit shocked to see that at first as i am used to him playing it cool but i loved his portrayal of Harvey. For me he completely nailed it.
Maggie was a lot better than Holmes and i only wish she had been in Begins. She was just a lot more believable in this role.
Caine and Freeman are as always in top form.
The Nolans have crafted a well thought out script. I love the direction in which they have gone with this.
Nolan is one of those great directors working today and for me his work since Memento has been nothing short of excellent and its on show here again. He weaves his stories in and out of one another building up to one hell of a last 30 minutes.
The action was also turned up a notch this time as is the drama. It honestly feels like the movie is going a million miles an hour and wont let up.
When alls said and done it wont be everyones cup of tea but its everything i wanted out of a Batman movie and so much more, hell its all i wanted out of a superhero movie and so much more.
Its my fave movie of the summer so far and definitely my fave film of the year and i cant wait to see it again.

A+

I've been noticing on RT that the NEw York-based critics are currently giving the movie a bad review.

Or so it seems...

With all the early raves and my own anticipation, I feel like I'll be in for a letdown no matter how good it is. :(

I saw 110 minutes of the movie before a thunderstorm killed the theater's power and prevented the film from re-starting. So I'll chime in tomorrow after the 1:45 p.m. show.

Brilliant. I was shocked when

Spoiler: show
Rachel dies.

it was really sad. I wonder if 2 face will be back.

Heath Ledger's performance was incredibly. Seriously there was never a dull moment.

Cant wait to see it. Was the theatre packed?

Not sure if everyone knew it opened Wed as all the billboards have "July 17" on them.

I really can't get over the last moments of Rachel. Soon as she started singing my heart dropped even though the bomb went off a split second later.

Seriously the performances here are just fantastic.

I hope I can go see TDK this weekend. We've had Wall-E for three weeks. :grrr: Time for something new.

I have Wall-E and TDK coming at the same time this weekend. I'm totally torn between my Wall-E/Pixar allegiance or general curiosity for TDK. I'll just have to wait a day to see the other but I don't like being in this position. :tears:

Jesus Christ, it's good. My biggest complaint is a bit of heroic music during the final confrontation that I don't think fits the scene. Again, that's my major issue.
