The DVD/Blu-Ray Rental and Sales Thread
I had this thread over at BOM to track the weekly numbers for rentals of DVD's and VHS. It's just to see what movies do better at your local video store, and interesting to see the big renters of the year.

I'm glad The Punisher is that big on DVD. I think we can look forward to the sequel now.

The Day After Tomorrow is doing very good on rentals for the first week. Hopefully, it can make over $45 million total in rentals.
Mean Girls is dissapointing. I thought it would do much better than that. Man on Fire is doing very well, and should do about $45 million total in rentals. Van Helsing should do about the same or around $40 million.
Dawn of the Dead should do very nice numbers. Horror/thriller movies usually do well on rentals, like The Butterfly Effect and Secret Window.

Anyone think Fahrenheit 9/11's rental gross will increase as we get closer to election day?

Best selling? No clue. Probably Passion of the Christ or soon to be Shrek 2.
Best renting? Secret Window, Master & Commander, Kill Bill Vol. 2
There are more, but I need to check.

It's possible a lot of people bought Mean Girls (like I did).

I bought it too. It's one of those movies I can rewatch A LOT.

I guess people were in the mood for somewhat frightening, so they picked up White Chicks.

@ White Chicks
I hope it doesn't mean we'll have White Chicks 2 coming out next summer
Man of Fire is doing incredibly well in rentals, it will probably cross $50 million.

Sorry guys, I've been busy.
Here are the full numbers for the week of November 23rd.
http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/rentals?date=2004-11-28
Terminal, The (2004) - $12M
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) - $10.2M
Sleepover (2004) - $2.87M
Awesome for The Terminal. Good for Harry Potter, too.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) - $14.5M
Hero (2002) - $4.99M
http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/rentals?date=2004-12-05
That's awesome for Spidey! Bad for Hero, though I'm not surprised, since my Blockbuster only carried about two rows for Hero instead of the usual 5-6 for non-blockbuster movies. Hell, even Sleepover got 6 rows at my Blockbuster. :?

A rather stupid question, exactly how much of the rental revenue does the studio receive?

Spider-Man 2 Rules the Charts Source: The Hollywood Reporter December 9, 2004
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Spider-Man 2 led home video sales last week, capturing the No. 1 slot on both Nielsen VideoScan's First Alert DVD and VHS sales weekly charts, says The Hollywood Reporter. The sequel has sold through more than 8 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first week on retail shelves
Not as big as i expected.TPOTC still has the record of best selling live action film in a week.

I believe that Blockbuster and the like buy the DVDs. For VHS the system was for the studio to get a portion of the rental revenue. I read that was about 25% compared to 55% from theaters and 70% from sales of DVD/VHS. I'm sure that rentals are still relatively unimportant to the studios. They would much rather have people buy it then rent it.

The Bourne Supremacy (2004) - $15.1M
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) - $14.5M
Species 3 (2004) - $2.87M
http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/rentals?d ... ®ion=us
The Bourne Supremacy explodes onto DVD last week. That's one of the best opening weeks in rentals this year. To compare, The Bourne Identity scored an outstanding $22.1M when it came out, but rentals were much bigger last year than they were this year. Even Dodgeball did excellent. I expected that because comedies tend to do good in rentals (ex. White Chicks). Both will make over $50 million in rentals. Spider-Man 2 also had a nice drop, and is on it's way to more than $50 million in rentals as well. The first Spider-Man opened to $15.6M and increased to $16.1M, but like I said, bigger time for rentals before this year.

I, Robot (2004) - $13.5M
Collateral (2004) - $13.3M
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) - $5.1M
http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/rentals?date=2004-12-19
Some big numbers we've been seeing lately. The holdovers from the previous weeks are holding up very well. The Bourne Supremacy, Dodgeball, and Spidey all seem to be heading towards $60+ million in rentals.

On home video, "Shrek 2" has sold more than 30 million units in just over four weeks and the company believes it has the potential to surpass Disney's "The Lion King" as the biggest selling video title of all time.
http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,1413 ... 52,00.html
In the first 3 days, out of the 12.1 mil. units sold, 11 mil. were dvds. That means it has sold more than 22 mil. DVDs (more like 26-27 mil. DVDs)
