This is an upcoming horror series created by screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, Hugo, Skyfall). It stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, Helen McCrory, and Billie Piper, among others. A teaser trailer and the synopsis:

Quote:
Some of literature's most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.

I am very intrigued.

When is this premiering? I didn't even realize that production started. I'll watch anything with Reeve Carney.

Wow, where does this come from? I love Eva Green and the synopsis sounds (if done right) like pure awesomeness. Definately checking this out.

Yeah this sounds interesting. Is it a Showtime production or co--production with UK TV?

The Showtime blogs says around Spring. I think they should air it during the summer with less competition.

Penny Dreadful, The Strain, and True Detectives are probably the new shows of 2014 that I'm looking forward to.

MadGez, it is a co-production with Sky Atlantic.

Pilot was leaked last night. Did anyone see it?

I started watching it last night. Fell asleep after the opening scene during intro. So I don't know what's it like, but the production seemed like it was Doctor Who. Very British and theater stage-like. I expected it to be more Hollywood-y considering it's on Showtime. Masters of Horror had nice visuals and production values.

I just watched the pilot, and I highly enjoyed it. Heavy atmosphere. Intriguing characters. A few very intense sequences. This series should be a blast.

I found the pilot to be disappointing. The show lacks coherency. I don't know if they were trying to go for straight horror, adventure or mystery. Its like they were trying to combine some of the most popular shows into one. In a way it reminds me of Davinci's Demons and all the other Starz shows.

The pilot was decent. I'll definitely keep watching. It was a little slow to start, though I thought the Frankenstein scene at the end was incredible.

my feelings exactly. Like..there are a lot of good elements and details here, but the pilot doesn't work well as a whole.

^^

Also to further elaborate, I feel that the show has the same problems as Once Upon a Time because the characters are way too familiar that it becomes just cameo appearances. There isn't any real twist added to the characters. At least with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, we know its an action adventure.

The show runners are trying to advertise this as horror but its not that. Maybe it was in the somewhere in that segment. It then jumps to mystery to adventure.

I am loving this series. The second episode is riveting. I enjoyed the introduction of Dorian Gray, and the ending truly surprised me.

I believe, in general, this nicely blends adventure, horror, mystery, and period drama. It would be hard to sustain a pure horror experience in every episode, so it is wise to lace the creepy atmosphere and gore with other elements.

I absolutely love this series. I am addicted. This interpretation of Dorian Gray is a fantastic character.

It has been pretty mediocre so far. But the last episode has got to be one of the shittiest episodes of any show ever made. Terrible filler episode and so uneventful. After 15 min I only fast forwarded through it.

Ha. Why even continue to watch a series you fast-forward through? Insanity.

Anyway, another terrific episode. A welcome chance for Eva Green to completely dominate an episode and shine. Many beautiful images and intriguing moments. I adore the way this series is paced and structured, favoring atmosphere and character over an obsession with and-then-and-then-and-then plot propulsion.

I've been catching up on this over the past two days. Helen McCrory is amazing this season and terrifying as hell. Also the episode with Vanessa's backstory was fantastic.

I, obviously, adore this series beyond any reason. My favorite on television right now.

In my opinion, the second season has improved on the first. Tighter, harder, scarier, more emotional.

Currently watching episode 6. Eva Geen is giving one of the best performances on tv.

The story of Mina and Vanessa was awesome.

A very creepy episode in general last night.

I have always assumed Dorian Gray would end up joining the heroes' side (with his "invincibility" perhaps being useful against vampires), but maybe not.
