Post A Look Back At.... Friends
Let me welcome you guys to the first showing of this new proyect, "A Look Back At...." this is the place where I introduce you to old tv series, their storylines, their actors and their mainstream impact.

Image

That's right the first Tv Show will be one of the most succesful shows ever, Friends.

Cast
Jennifer Aniston
Courteney Cox
Lisa Kudrow
Matt LeBlanc
Matthew Perry
David Schwimmer

Before the show

Image

Jennifer Anitson.- She made her debut in the 1993 horror flick Leprechaun and appeared in a handful of stage productions before moving to Los Angeles. Although she had no problem landing small-screen roles, they were all on short-lived series.

Image

Courteney Cox.- She was actually the biggest star of the show, at least in its first seasons. er early television work includes a starring role in the short-lived television series Misfits of Science , and later a recurring role on the TV series Family Ties as Lauren Miller. She had a supporting role as Jewel, the hard-as-nails assistant to James Belushi's character, in the 1990 fantasy film Mr. Destiny. In 1994, shortly before the debut of sitcom, Friends, Cox appeared on Seinfeld in "The Wife" episode as Jerry's girlfriend named Meryl.

Image

Lisa Kudrow.-Kudrow was hired to play the role of Roz Doyle in Frasier, but the part was re-cast with Peri Gilpin during the filming of the pilot episode. However, one of the people working on Frasier also worked on Friends and suggested Kudrow audition for the show. Her first recurring television role was Ursula Buffay, the eccentric waitress on the NBC sitcom Mad About You.

Image

Matt LeBlanc.-He did several comercials and small roles in tv shows, was the least known "Friend".

Image

Matthew Perry.- Perry made a guest appearance on Beverly Hills, 90210 as Roger Azarian. In the midst of his many continuing guest roles on TV, Perry was a regular on the 1990 CBS sitcom Sydney, playing the younger brother of Valerie Bertinelli's title character. Three years later, he landed his second TV starring role on the ABC sitcom Home Free, which only lasted 13 episodes in the spring of 1993.

Image

David Schwimmer.- Schwimmer made his television debut in the ABC movie A Deadly Silence, where he was cast in a supporting role. He followed this with roles on the legal drama L.A. Law, and the comedy-drama series The Wonder Years.

The Show

Intro (this was like season 9 or 10)

The show was about how this people interacted with each other, and their adventures as friends, the were many storylines in the ten seasons this show had, but the main storyline is the Rachel-Ross relationship (how on earth did Jen can fell for that guys is beyond me, but whatever).

They sorta had a relationship but broke up because Ross cheated on Rachel while they were on a break (this became a series long joke). They tried to get over each other, they kinda did it, but right at the end of season 8 they had a daughter, and at the end they got back together.

Monica and Chandler were another couple that were linked, around the third season finale, Monica made a joke about how she'll never date Chandler, but in the fourth season finale, they ended up having sex, and since then they slowly started a relationship that culminated in their marriage and by the end of the show, they adopted newborn twins.

Joey and Phoebe were the sluts of the show, they were also the "dumb" characters of the show, they didn't do many things. Phoebe actually had a series long storyline with her lover David, who was doing some sort of research in Rusia (or somewhere close), and at the end of season 9 David tried to propose, but he was beaten by Phoebe's lastest ex, and Phoebe chose Mike instead of him, ending this series long relationship. On the other hand, Joey the only season long story was his crush on Rachel, and they were a couple but they decided to end it because they thought they'd be better as friends.

The show ended with Monica and Chandler moving out of their apartment ( where the 90% of the show happened), with an incredibly sad scene, where people claim that the actors weren't faking and they were actually crying.
Well here's the scene.

Mainstream success and impact

The show slowly became a huge succes, it started doing ok, but NBC gave it the post super bowl slot in and then the story changed its last episode drew the amount of 52.6m viewers, making it the third most watched series finale ever.

The impact Friends did on our culture was huge, let me quote this from wikipedia:

Quote:
Although the producers thought of Friends as "only a TV show", numerous psychologists investigated the cultural impact of Friends during the series' run. Aniston's hairstyle was nicknamed "The Rachel", and copied around the world. Joey's catchphrase, "How you doin'?", became a popular part of Western English slang, often used as a pick-up line or when greeting friends. The series also impacted the English language, according to a study by a linguistics professor at the University of Toronto. The professor found that the characters used the word "so" to modify adjectives more often than other intensifiers, such as "very" and "really". Although the preference had already made its way into the American vernacular, usage on the series may have accelerated the change. Following the September 11 attacks, ratings increased 17% over the previous season.

After the show ended, the biggest start was Jennifer Aniston (And she still is, anyone that says otherwise is nuts.) She became a movie star and has had many success in this bussines (Bruce Almighty, Along Came Polly, The Break-Up, Marley & Me, He's Just Not That Into You.).

Courteney Cox is currently starring in the comedy Cougar Town (or whatever its new name is) and will return to the big screen in the highly anticipated film, Scream 4.

The other cast members have fallen into obscurity, but they're slowly coming back to hollywoood, David Schwimmer became a director, Lisa Kudrow is doing a comedy show, Matthew Perry is doing movies (although not as succesfull as Jennifer's) and Matt LeBlanc will star in a comedy about an actor who was succesful but has fallen into obscurity (lol).

Whether you liked it or not you can't deny that this show is one of the biggest shows in america's history.

Over the last few days I've watched all of season four, and this is one great season. It seems to feature all of the best stuff that I remember Friends for. It is a candidate for the best season ever. It has the Ross/Emily/London thing, Phoebe's triplet surrogacy, the apartment bet, the free porn, the jellyfish sting, rugby in the park, the useless light switch, the entertainment centre/theft, Chandler going to Yemen, Rachel/Joshua, and of course 'the letter', which is hilarious and might be my favourite Friends plot line.

"And don't worry about me getting no sleep ... I STILL HAVE YOUR LETTER!" :funny:

Friends 3- 8 fantastic. They coasted the lasted 2 but, still. Today if Season came about, it would have been cancelled. So weird today. Seinfeld is the best example. It took 4 years to go from nothing to #1.

Say what you want about network TV, NBC really killed it in the 90s

I thought Korrgan was harry713's alternate account before knowing about this exchange, this just hints it at more

Season 7 of Friends was the weakest, IMO. 4 was a comedown from 3. 5-6 are my favorite. The funniest episode is the "they don't know that we know they know" thing.

Season 5 is epic. But 2-4 and 6 and 8 are also great.

It's like picking a favourite child. All seasons are great, and I find it hard to differentiate between seasons of TV shows.

I agree they are all great.

I can differentiate seasons for shows ive re-watched heaps - ie. Seinfeld. Even then, I often change my thoughts on each season upon re-watching.

Of the long-running shows, I've watched Friends the most times from start to finish, but I could never, for example, pinpoint what season the Van Damme episode is in or what season it is when Chandler shows his third nipple, though I would know if it's the first five or the second five. I just know that I have enjoyed all seasons of Friends. Some for the same reason, others (mainly the latter ones) for different.

I was thinking the other day, will Friends be my [generation's] version of, say, Rising Damp? A show that I never found funny and actually kind of hated watching, but that my mum's generation really liked and still like to watch -- because I'll never tire of watching Chandler, Joey, Rachel, and Ross.

I believe it's the opposite, it's apparently insanely popular with new generation who are watching it for the first time on Netflix.

I can only relate certain episodes of Friends with the season it was in - ie. Season 1 and the blackout or episodes with Marcel, or Chandler and Monika's wedding later on etc.

Seinfeld on the other hand - i can tell which Season most of the episodes were in.

Yeah apparently Friends is popular among younger generations too. I know my 7 year old likes Friends and Seinfeld.

I look at it as such - in the 80s I used to love shows from the 60's (20 years earlier) - Get Smart, I Dream of Jeannie, Mr. Ed, Gilligan's Island etc.

So this is similar to 90's shows with kids/teens today - these are also 20 year old shows.

Interesting. I didn't look at it like that. I guess Friends is a lot more like those shows in terms of mass appeal, whereas Rising Damp is more of an acquired taste (though still popular for the type of show it was). And it's true. I also watched and liked shows from the decades earlier. The Munsters, The Flinstones, and Thunderbirds. Not that many like you, but then I also do not really consider myself an 80s child. The oldest I was in the 80s was 4. I'm more of a 90s child, but still watched and loved those three shows, plus others I am sure.

Yes I used to love The Munsters, Flinstones, Jetsons etc too.

Despite getting a lot of British shows here, i don't recall ever seeing Rising Damp on TV here.

Me, my brother, and my mum used to watch Friends on Channel 4 every Friday at 9pm, and we used to sing the theme tune together. Good times.

It was something like Friends at 9pm, Frasier or Will & Grace at 9:30pm, and Sex and the City or something more mature at 10pm. Then re-runs were (and probably still are) on in the mornings. Same bunch of shows from about 7am to 10am.

Nice. I like how shows and blocks of shows on a given evening can make for some fantastic family memories.
