Just finished episode five. It's good, but I don't love it. I dig its retro Stephen King/The Goonies feel, the score is the best part, it's nicely shot and it's interesting, but it takes forever and is typically television in its buildup. It's good. Probably better than 90% of other TV shows, but it's not gripping enough. It also feels rather kiddie-friendly. It almost shows nothing. I will watch the remaining three episodes, but I am not eager to watch them as I am with, say, Homeland or True Detective.

I guess I just cannot see why she's popular, if indeed she is. She does nothing. She's in it for a few minutes. Is there a specific reason?

Her kitschy fashion sense and the sense that she got screwed over for being the long-suffering friend.

Personally, I never rlly gave a shit about her and think Nancy was not as uncaring as people suggest.

Her kitschy fashion sense is only kitschy in modern day, though. Back in the 80s, that was not kitschy. That was dressing like your parents.

I thought the meme was based on the idea that Will's disappearance is this monumental event and search, but when Barb does the show doesn't really care that much about her family or the people looking for her other than being Nancy's friend. It's sort of justice for the "unimportant" characters throughout the years shuffled off to the side

Right, ok. That makes sense.

Just finished episode 4. It's really good and I want to know how it ends, but there are points where it drags.

Ok, so I watched all eight episodes now. It only really starts to move at episode six. As a whole, it is just alright. There are some elements that are great (score, initial eeriness, Elle, the kids, Hopper), and some elements that are along the right lines but not utilised correctly (the threat, the monster, the conspiracy), and some bad elements (Winona Ryder and her fucking annoying voice, too long, some of the acting).

People say it is like a Stephen King film mixed with The Goonies, but I also think, especially with regards to the monster, that there's some Resident Evil in there too. It should have been much scarier. Any early suspense soon evaporates after five episodes of stalling. This would have been much better at a lean five episodes max.

B+

Why aren't you as anal with Stallone / Schwarzenegger / etc. movies in your reviews?

I'm not sure when it aired but this should have been post-watershed and included swearing and more gore. It certainly called for it. Because it didn't, it just makes it seem quite kiddie-friendly like Eerie Indiana or something, and the threat level had a ceiling. I know they were going for that suburban extra-terrestrial Spielberg feel, but come on, this is 2016! We need more. It's cool in a retro way. I appreciated it. But I won't hold it in much of a high regard because at the end of the day all it did well is imitation. Very well, in fact, but imitation is imitation.

I mean, it's still at its heart a kids story. That's like saying "The Goonies was fine, but it should have had naked boobs". Stranger Things didn't call for being more violent or heavier language. I don't think either one of those things would have made it more enjoyable.

Actually, I think it did call for it. But alone that would not have made it a masterpiece. There many other issues too. Just if there was gore and language, it may have made it more enjoyable, especially with regards to Hopper.

Episode 6 was the best yet. Curious to see how it ends, though I still don't quite get all the hype.

Six is good because stuff actually starts to happen. Seven and Eight are also good.

Finished it. Don't get the hype, but it's good and there's loads of potential going forward. Nancy is the best character, and not just because she was hot. I felt for her even through all the stupid shit she did.

And Barb? WTF, she was in it for two minutes. A total red shirt.

I hype is easy to get!

It is a coming of age tale in tv show format! That has never been done before. It like The Goonies but better.
