'The Hangover' Becomes #1 Selling Comedy on DVD

The official release from Warner Bros.:

Burbank, CA - Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' smash hit The Hangover has added another milestone to its record-breaking 2009 run. Since its release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 15th 2009 the film has become the #1 comedy of all time on the DVD charts with combined consumer and rental sales topping 8.6 million units with 1.5 million units coming from Blu-ray purchases. Strong sales are expected to continue bringing the six-month estimate to 9.5 million units.

“We are thrilled that The Hangover is enjoying the same level of success as it had on the big screen, having become the #1 comedy of all time on DVD. Working with a filmmaker as talented as Todd Phillips to bring this film to DVD—both for the fans who want to see it again and again, and for those who may not yet have seen it—has been a privilege,” said Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video.

The Hangover was the box office surprise hit of 2009, earning more than $467 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. Currently the film is nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for a Golden Globe in the category Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. It also received a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy, and was named one of the Top Ten films of the year by AFI.

The record-breaking performance of The Hangover was one of a number of milestones reached by Warner Home Video, which remains the market share leader in Total Video sales as well as the segment Total Blu-ray for 2009. Market share leader categories also include Theatrical Catalog Video, Family and Animation Catalog and TV on Video (DVD and BD combined).

I have a hard time believing POST GRAD did not make the top 50. It was the most popular rental (of the new releases) at my store last week (an honor which probably would have went to HURT LOCKER had we gotten more than one copy). It has been advertised on almost every Fox movie for a while, including NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2.

Anyway, fantastic for THE HURT LOCKER.

Its hard to find data, the-numbers doesn't seem to be tracking anymore. Boondock Saints II looks to sell over 1 million units in two weeks though.

The numbers is still updating every week actually. Now the accuracy can be argued, but they keep updating very regularly.

Not true. They update every single week, the available data is just older but that has always been this way. Nothing has changed.

JESUS! How the hell did MACHETE do that awesome in sales? That's better than RESIDENT EVIL debuted with. And it did better than DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS! I'm certainly glad. We'll be getting a sequel or two for sure.

Blu-ray Sales, Sept. 12-18: The Force is With Thor
Posted September 21, 2011 10:18 PM by Tony Sanchez

For the week ending 09/18/11, Thor had a thunderous debut on the home video market as it became the No. 1 unit seller on both the Blu-ray and the overall sales charts. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film became the number one superhero movie of the summer as its finished its theatrical run with a worldwide total of $449 million. Thor was mighty for Blu-ray as it finished its first week in stores by slamming 61% of its total package media sales for the HD format.

The most popular topic of discussion in the Internet movie forums for the last couple of weeks has been about the anticipated Blu-ray release of Star Wars. Putting all debate to the side and focusing on sales, Star Wars had an impressive debut for the Blu-ray format as it finished its first three days of HD release by capturing the No. 2 spot on the Blu-ray sales chart and the No. 3 spot on the aggregate sales chart. The Complete Saga sold 64.49% as many units as Thor in Blu-ray and 39.45% as many units overall. Considering that the Star Wars Set was retailing for around $80 and The God of Thunder for approximately $25 in Blu-ray, less than $20 for the DVD version, there is no doubt that The Complete Saga was the week's No. 1 title in terms of the revenue generated.

Continuing its strong run of disc sales, X-Men: First Class, finished the week at No. 3 in the Blu-ray sales chart. The mutants managed 54% of its total unit sales from BD discs. At No. 4 on the Blu-ray sales charts was Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. The gladiators slayed 39% of their package media sales for Blu.

Star Wars: Original Trilogy contributed to the revenue attributed to the series by landing on the No. 5 spot on the Blu-ray sales chart and No. 13 on the overall sales chart. Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy only managed to climb to No. 15 in the BD sales chart.

That's pretty damn impressive

2 (2) The Help 233,978 -67.8% 3,418,984 $3,975,286 $58,567,516 4

http://www.the-numbers.com/weekly-bluray-sales-chart
2 9 The Help 251,416 +49.55% 1,086,638 $7,037,139 $30,414,990 4

The Help is doing very well on DVD/Blu-Ray. A $100m+ total combined in Blu-Ray/DVD sales is a lock. It's even selling more copies than bigger hits that beat it domestically this year, Captain America, Hangover 2, Rise of the Apes, Thor, Pirates 4, Fast Five.

Catching Fire has only sold half the DVD's and blurays the first did. That must be disappointing, especially considering Frozen has become one of the biggest DVDs of all time.
