Mubarak's biggest mistake was that he did not prepare legitimate transition of power. When you're over 80 and 30 years in power you gotta think about those things.
Will be curious to see what's gonna happen in Saudi Arabia, an even more fucked up system.

No revolution is gonna happen in Saudi Arabia as long as they are a major ally and the oil is pumping.

That can change.

I don't expect revolution, but a major bloodshed among the clans.

Saudi Arabia is as important a bulwark as Israel is. Things can change, but only if the ground situation is unrecognizable to today.

1. Culture is not static.

2. "Democracy" isn't always the best of all choices (India).

So McCain and Graham are obsessed with Syria. It must be on their collective dart board as the bullseye with how much they are pushing Obama to get involved.

Question here is concerning the "use" of chemical weapons. Who's hands do we want them in? Bashad or Islamic radicals fighting with Syrian rebels?

My opinion is that we should have helped him stay in power. Instead, we are stuck in one position having to support Islamic rebels.

President Assad will win this war, it's only a question of when. Now with Russian S-300 (also, rumored Iskanders, and soon, modified MIGs) Israel, or any other country, will not have the balls to get involved directly. With around 1000 getting killed per week, terrorists will soon run out of people. I bet the active stage of war will be over by the year's end or earlier, and then it will be a counter-terrorist operation. In the meantime, Syrian army, tempered in the 2-year war of the new type, will become one of the strongest in the region. The reconstruction of Syria will be a major project bringing a lot of demand and new jobs to the economies of its closest allies, Russia and Iran. Another outcome of this whole story is the greatest Western nightmare coming true - the inevitable future alliance of Russia, China and Iran.
But the real loser here is Europe - what are they going to do with hundreds of Europeans currently fighting Syrian government and getting the taste for blood from islamists, when they get back home?

Do you know the difference between rebels and terrorists?

I think people are getting a bit carried away saying an Arab Spring is coming to Turkey.

Turkey PM is rather popular but a divisive figure.

Well the Protest do allow Erdogan to realize that he cannot make the country into a Islamic state, Turkey is like in a deep conflict between East and West these days.

I am quite incensed over secularists in Egypt not condemning all the violence.

What Morsi was and did was wrong but the military engaging in crackdowns leading to the deaths of 600 civilians in one day is just a whole new level.
Imagine the outrage if Morsi killed 600 secularists in one day?

See the hypocrisy?

I think only a blind optimist can suggest the Military overthrew Morsi to establish a more fair democracy but to just return it to the old guard.

You guys should really look up what "a civilian" means. People engaging in violent clashes with the police and army, attacking police stations and administrative buildings are not civilians. The army waited too long and gave more than enough warnings.

Oh yes watching the Video on CNN everyone in the crowd is Osama Bin Laden Type.

They are simply people who support a cause that does agree with the secularist and people think they can die for that and that is wrong.

Killing 600 people in one day is simply not excusable and anyone who thinks that is wrong.

If you think what happen is Egypt is fine then you have to say what Erdogon did in Turkey was fine as well.

They said it perfectly clear, get the fuck out of the streets. Then they declared a state of emergency and a martial law - look up what that means.

The Military launched a coup and is telling people angry about it to go fuck off, yes people should just sit at home and go okay sure.

You are under a rather silly assumption that the Military wants real democracy though ^

It appears to me they simply want to go back to the old days.

That is why the killing is not justifiable because its all a farce for the old guard to take power.

Quote:
I don't give a fuck if they think they can die for some shit cause (which they did, so they kinda got what they wanted), but if they think they can KILL for it, they must be put down. Over 40 policemen are dead - this doesn't happen in peaceful demonstrations.

You sir are very very misguided and is the thinking that allows this stupidity to happen.

You know how many police officers and people were killing in the Mubarak uprising ?
How many police officers were killed in Turkey ?
Should those people been killed and shot ?

No because they were liberals and secularists. Imagine if Morsi shot and killed 600 people in one day all in the name of peace and order.

The Hypocrisy here is why many are justified to condemn the Military.

Nobody gets killed in peaceful demonstrations. But if they turn to violent riots - yes, police and army are allowed to shoot.

So Mubarak was then justified for killing people against him?
