I have to move the website to a new server. There are two options: 1) I can lock the forum for two days beginning sometime tomorrow morning and transfer all posts. 2) I can simply switch the servers, and the forum will be rolled back to March 21st, but there will be no downtime. Which would you prefer? |

a lot has happened in the last few days, it would suck to lose that much information. I can survive (barely) without this for two days. |

Yeah lock the forum for two days. Atleast no posts will be lost. I should be busy at the grand prix next few days so works out good for me

but but but my Pick'Em playoffs were supposed to start this weekend. : ( There's only 2.5 weeks left in the season, we were already on a short timetable! How am I supposed to fit 3 playoff rounds into a week in a half

Thanks to everyone for the posts and votes, it helps a lot in these situations to hear from you all. What I'm going to do is as follows: Since the majority of you want all the posts, and not just the rolled back posts, I'm going to lock the forum, hopefully this evening, and do a full dump of the forum database. This will pull all posts up until the forum was locked over, nothing will be lost. At that point I will begin setting up the DB, transfering files and once those are done, switching the domain to point to the new server. This transfer process will take anywhere from 2 to 5 days all told, but for most of us www.worldofkj.com will take us to the new server within 3 days. To mitigate downtime, I will be unlocking the forum on the OLD SERVER after I copy the database. This means you will be able to use this old forum, but nothing you post will be saved. It's just to be used as a way to talk, pass the time, etc until you get forced to the new server. If anyone has any questions, I'll be checking this thread all day and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. KJ |

All you have to do is go to http://www.worldofkj.com and it will take you, for now, to the old server. Once I point the domain to the new server, people will slowly begin being sent there when they visit http://www.worldofkj.com. The process and time is different for everyone, typically, the closer you are to a big city, the quicker you'll be sent to the new server. 90% of the users will be on the new server within 24 hours of when I switch the domain to the new server, but it can take up to 3 days if your in the boonies. But the short answer is, yes, you'll be taken to the new server automatically. Once you're on the new server, you'd need a special link to go back to the old one. |
