Post subject:  Everyone's a Critic - 2006

I propose splitting Everyone's A Critic into two camps next year. The problem being that it is hard, very hard, to find threads on there. The issue is that it's cluttered with new and old and random films in between, so it's easy to find when it is in theaters, but when it comes out on DVD you have to hunt for it.

I recommend doing the following...

Make Everyone's A Critic main be "Everyone's A Critic - 2006". The only thing that should go there are films that open in 2006.

Move the current Everyone's a Critic to a 2005 and before archive. Rinse and repeat at the end of the year.

The proper thing to do would be to break this out into genres, but that's a lot of work.

Personally, I'm much more interested in people's thoughts for movies that are happening now and in the past or when they come out on DVD, but I'm not incredibly interested in what people thinks of Fred Savage's Little Monsters.

Not a bad idea, actually.

Although 2005 movies will still be discussed for a while, with films coming on DVD, Oscars, etc. If we were to do this, I'd say make the main section for 2006 films, a sub-forum for 2005 only, and another sub-forum for everything else before 2005.

andaroo, Krem made a great 'tool' for easy finding of any movie in there, so I don't think new subforums are needed.

Thread (sticky in forum) - http://72.36.130.178/forum/viewtopic.php?t=260

Page with all the movies (automatically updated) - http://worldofkj.com/Krem/movies.php

The tool is good (I hadn't seen it) but the presentation and information management is awful.

There has got to be a better way to present the material.

Perhaps "Everyone's A Critic" should go directly to a reformated version of the tool, which has a drop down and a look up.

The tool should have the year of the film, maybe release month, this should all probably be possible but I don't know the database set up.

While Nebs is correct...Krem's page autoupdates and a quick ctrlF will get ya what youre looking for...I kinda do like the idea of having a seperate forum for just 2006 movies, too...So, I dunno, either way works, I guess.

Yeah, maybe big films like Munich, Kong, etc. that are still in theaters should be in 2006 too (because people can still go see 'em).

I'm just thinking of ways to try and fix that section... because it is a mess of information overload and it is probably one of the most important sections anywhere at WOKJ.

andaroo, we discussed a movie database with bABA and the direction is not yet clear.

The php script that Nebs linked is as good as it will get for now.

You could script the PHP straight into the messageboard...

...!!

Perhaps Baba needs to be hit with a hammer.

I will mock it up later. Your tool is okay (!!!!) but there is a way you can merge it with the section. It does involve KY and gerbils though.

It's hammer time.

As it will take a while for the 2006 films to get started and some of the WW people don't get the 2005 films for awhile.

I think it would be smart to seperate these as suggested above.

I would make the cut date as of November 1, 2005 as all the November and December movies are still being discussed.

Then if possible have any movie out for a period of time - say 6 or 9 or 12 months ( 1 year ) be switched back into the second category.

* Movies released within the Last 12 Months
* Movies released Prior to the Last 12 months

Seriously, the tool can be made much prettier and integrated into the forum, there is no doubt about it. It takes time, though, and until bABA decides what to do about all the movies, etc. it just doesn't make sense to try to revamp it.

Then we must make bABA listen. We must make him understand. Because this issue turns me into a ticking time bomb of RAGE AND YOU WOULDN'T LIKE TO SEE ME WHEN I GET ANGRY WOULD YOU PUNK ?!?!?!!??!!!! 1.1.1.11111

I don't have much trouble using dolce's archive, but I wouldn't be against this idea.

you see that 'search movie' option on the top banner? type in a movie name and find the movie you're looking for there. it leads directly to the critic's page.

That's a link to a calculator for b.o. games Krem posted. Does that have to do with the archived film thread? I think Krem took that over, but if people want me to update the manuel list because its easier, than let me know and I'll get on it tonight.

As to the thread, maybe a sub-forum? Rather than a seperate forum? I always hesitate to do the full splitting, but sub-forum worked ok for trailers and foreign/indie no?

For god's sake, DON'T update that thing manually!!!!!!!!

I know that as a librarian your instinct is to catalogue stuff, but there is absolutely no need to. There's a search option that bABA created, and there's a self-updating list that I did. Between those two things it should be more than enough for now.
