I started reading after the first episode of the HBO series. So far - I am not finished - my favorite characters are Tyrion Lannister and Varys.

Tyrion is my favorite too.

Varys is even better in the show than in the books.

Swords is just epic. That said the second half is much better than the first. I'd put it on par or slightly ahead of Thrones and better than Kings.

Feast is easily the weakest. Its GRRM's fault for splitting the 4th book. While the Publishers Weekly review of Dance calls it similar 'feel' to Feast, I'm expecting it to be better seeing that the better characters are in it.

A warning to all. Apparently A Dance With Dragons shipped out early in Germany on accident. So trolls around the web are taking advantage of this by posting mass spoilers wherever they can. Sort of a "SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE" type of thing. So avoid all Song of Ice and Fire related forums for the next two weeks.

I never joined any nor will I. Fanboys pretty much go on my nerves and I really don't care if Arya got Needle of September 3rd or 4th which is the type of things they get into debates for. Die hard fanboys = idiots. Regular (normal) fanboys for casual discussion is what I like the most.

Luckily BKB doesn't care much for ASoIaF. Otherwise I bet those spoilers would be plastered all over WOKJ. :funny:

The diehard fanboys can be idiots. I mean look at some of the posts regarding the tv show... "oh i cant believe that they made Ghost bark, Ghost is silent, he shouldnt bark, I wont be watching again" or "Why wasnt Dany bald at the end of Season 1, she should be bald, I think i'll cry all day". Pathetic.

That said, did Snape really kill Dumbledore?? Im not into that series.

Lol, sorry for spoiling it then. I guess I'm no better than the people I mock.Though if you haven't gotten into Harry Potter by now then you most likely never will.

Has anybody read The Gentlemen Bastards series? I'm just starting up on Book 1 "The Lies of Locke Lamora" and it's absolutely wonderful. It even has a quote from GRRM on the cover saying how much he loved it. Kind of the same type of mature high fantasy. And like GRRM, Scott Lynch has put more focus on character building and shaping his world than the more fantastic elements of the story.

hehe dont worry, Ive seen 3 of the films and doesn't really worry me if that part was spoiled.

Locke Lamora is on my list after I finish Dance and The Name of the Wind. GRRM has been raving about it for years.

I'm 550 pages into A Feast For Crows. Cersei is so fucked.

Hahaha. Yup.

Amazon shipped my copy of A Dance With Dragons yesterday. If everything goes well it should be here by Friday. I though about buying in a local bookshop that's importing American and British edition, but in the end I decided that couple of days means nothing and I get to save around 4$. But now I'm having a feeling that this shipment might be one of those that gets lost a bit and needs time to find its way.

Finished A Feast for Crows. Book finally developed some forward momentum in the last 200 pages; I want to plow through Dance With Dragons to get some Cersei resolution.

If Cersei is found guilty and executed, would Jaime's refusal to aid her qualify as the maegi's prophecy fulfilled?

I'm on chapter 10 or so, the first Davos one. So far it has been excellent, to nobody's surprise.

My favorite part

Spoiler: show
Jon taking vengeance by executing Janos Slynt in front of the entire Night's Watch. That frog had that coming since book one.

I haven't had the time to buy it yet but plan to in the next couple of days.

Good to hear you like it so far. Apparently the second half is even better than the first so that bodes well.

I'd be happy if its better than AFFC and on par with ACOK. Not expecting AGOT or ASOS levels and nor should it have to live up to those benchmarks.

Never trust amazon to bring something on time. Unless you pay the 10 dollars extra for overnight shipping that is.

Thats why you need to use those westeros crows for delivery. I skipped to the Davos chapters first to see what did happen when I got the books

Although it shares a few of the same faults as Feast for Crows, A Dance With Dragons stands far above it and with the other three books in the series. A perfect pacing that results in more than a few shocking twists and turns. Nothing will ever top the Red Wedding, but ... (DO NO READ IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE BOOK)

Spoiler: show
OMG Jon! :tears: :tears: :tears: :tears: Murdered by his own black brothers. I hope Melisandre can save him, but I doubt it... And Varys returning at the end to take out Kevan Lannister and Grand Maester Pycelle! Shit is crazy. I quite liked Kevan though.. Jon Connigton was my favorite new character. Aegon's invasion of Westoros spices things up quite a bit. They had done plenty of baby swapping in the series, but never did I suspect another Targaryen was alive. And how could he leave us hanging with Jaime going off with Brienne and King Stannis supposedly being smashed at Winterfell.

I wish the book had been over 2000 pages. Could not get enough of it. Winds of Winter cannot come soon enough!

I tend to read Martin slowly, so I'm only 500 pages in. Still, lots of cool things. Within the last 100 pages...

Spoiler: show
Mance is alive!
Bran can sort of time travel!

So no one else has finished it? Now I really feel like a geek. :funny:

Spoiler: show
Anyways, after looking around the web it seems that Jon is not actually dead, or will be resurrected/warged by Melisandre or Ghost. He also might be a Targaryen and the real Azor Ahai. Need The Winds of Winter now!

I had a friend of mine these past two weeks staying with me. He's been coming every summer these past 6 years, but I still feel like I need to take him round and show him stuff. So Dance was put on hold. I did read ten pages today though. Slowly starting to get back on track :)

I'm still only 200 pages in. Hope to make more headway soon. Just too busy, sick or damn exhausted. Liking it so far though.
