So what horror movies do you all have lined up for the month?

Right now I have:

Audition
Ringu - B-
Innocent Blood - B
Schlock - B-
The Crazies

On itunes. Last year I watched the first three Hellraisers, but don't feel any need to continue on with the series. I am very interested in Nightmare on Elm Street 4 since 3 was so good. Plus we have #Alive on Netflix which might be good. Also on Netflix, Hubie's Halloween (D) which looks so so dumb but might be worth it anyways. Hopefully Antebellum will dip from its currently unreasonable $20 rental price. I'll probably catch a few more of Malcolm's creature features too.

Also would love to see The Shining in theaters and since we don't have any new releases, there is a good possibility that happens. Won't even be difficult to get the entire theater for myself to avoid covid.

Speaking of covid, any good plague related horror movies that I wouldn't have already seen?

edit: Forgot about Corpse Bride, a movie I was so stoked on back in the day but still haven't watched. :)

I'm trying to get through as much Japanese and Korean horror as I can this month. I already finished watching the original Ju-On/Grudge films like two months ago and hopefully I can start watching the Ringu franchise this month as well.

I don't have a plan yet. IMO I find the winter season more spooky than Halloween. :)

I will share a few horror movies I saw last month:

The Grudge (US) - liked the non-linear narrative; the shock reveal was lame by today's standard. (C+)
The Grudge 2 (US) - surprisingly better than the first; timeline not only non-linear but also parallel, made me an attentive viewer. (B-)
The Grudge 3 (US) - a disjointed piece with not much build-up to the finale (F)
Salem's Lot (mini-series) - 80's Stephen King TV adaptation; low production value; inadequate Dracula-lite story line but with some finely-tuned characters and subplots (D+)
Firestarter - 80's Stephen King movie adaptation; wasted good premise; not really sci-fi horror but a good-citizens-running-from-bad-authorities kind of thriller (C+)

An idea just came across my mind. I suggest binge-watching seasons of Tales of the Unexpected this month, available free with ads on Amazon. They are TV adaptations of the interesting and peculiar short stories by Roald Dahl.

Your post (and Magic Mike's for the most part) is why I'm not much of a horror fan. Don't get me wrong, there are some great ones out there, but they're VERY few. Almost every horror film is a 6/10 type of movie, not scary, and is just meh for me.

I've been very limited on horror movie fare this October unfortunately. My first one was Ready or Not (lol, not a horror), and I've watched the first four Halloween movies. I had never seen III or 4. Loved III on its own, even if it's not a Michael Myers movie (which is fine by me). 4 surprised me, a pretty solid way to continue the franchise. I've never been blown away by Halloween II though. It's good but not as great as the first one.

Halfway through Halloween 5 last night and had to turn it off for now. Watch the rest tonight. But it didn't grab me at all. Like Halloween II to the original, it just squanders the previous film in too many unforgivable ways.

Ringu was decent but the remake was definitely alot better.

Innocent Blood is my favorite so far, it's a vampire mafia with nearly everyone who would be a supporting character on the Sopranos (Paulie, Silvio, Richie, possibly even more since I only watched two seasons of that show.) It definitely has a lot of issues that earned it the 39% on rottentomatoes, but I still had a good time with it and would give it a recommendation to anyone who likes the sound of a vampire mafia movie.

Yeah, Halloween 5 sucked lol was pleasantly surprised by III and especially 4 too. I have Halloween 6 with the original and the producer's cuts. I may try to watch both since I hear the producer's cut is superior.

Hey at least it brought us Paul Rudd.

The biggest problems with 6 is Pleasance is very underused and quiet, got rid of Danielle Harris, and they went out of their way to try and connect everything which while noble, makes the whole thing a mess. I still prefer H20 to 2018, even though that is hands down the best production.

5 and Resurrection are the worst of the series. Well and Zombie's fucking awful movies.

Post subject:  Re: Spooky Season 2020

I have always enjoyed Halloween 6 as a mindless slasher flick. It might not be a good Halloween film, but I love how brutal and scary Michael is in it and I never minded Paul Rudd or Marianne Hagan as the leads. Pleasance was underused though and the cult mythology they carry over from part 5 is still stupid, but I'd rather watch Curse anyday over Revenge which is just an all around awful film IMO. It sucks what happens to Jamie Strode at the beginning of the movie too.

Final count

Schlock - 6/10
Hubie Halloween - 2.5/10
Ringu - 6.2/10
Innocent Blood - 6.5/10
The Skeleton Key - 4/10
Friday the 13th 4: The Final Chapter - 5.9/10
The Crazies (1972) - 3.5/10
Friday the 13th 5: A New Beginning - 6.5/10
Friday the 13th 6: Jason Lives - 7/10
Peninsula - 8.5/10
Friday the 13th 7: The New Blood - 5/10
Friday the 13th 8: Jason Takes Manhattan - 1.5/10
Friday the 13th 9: Jason Goes To Hell - 6.6/10
Audition - 6.?/10

An OK haul. The only really great one wasn't much of a horror, Peninsula is closer to being Fast & Furious than Freddy, but most were fun or appropriately fucked.

I actually loved Halloween 6 in a guilty pleasure way. And that's just the original cut. I have the producer's cut as well, which I'll try to watch. But 6 really held my interest. It's a lot of nonsense, but at least it's interesting, which I could not say for 5 at all.

The Producer's Cut is a big improvement, IMO. That should have been the version released from the beginning. I give the PC an 8/10. Still not a big fan of the cult storyline but it's certainly better here. It makes more sense. Also if I'm remembering correctly it has some of the best fall atmosphere of the series.

It's spooky season once again. After plowing through all the Friday's last year, it is time for some nightmares.

4,5 and 6, the ones I haven't seen, are all on HBO so that should make things easier. Will have to re-up my sub to the Cock at some point for Halloween Kills, but I think I'll save the rest of that series for Spooky '22. Haven't been watching as many moviefilms as of late, so 4 might be enough, but I'll add Sinister if I need one more.

And Ice Nine Killls are releasing their sequel to the Silver Scream album! They've adopted the gimmick of making all their songs about horror movies/books and it works very well, in my opinion at least. The three new singles have been about American Psycho (Hip To Be Scared), Child's Play (Assault and Batteries) and Resident Evil (Rainy Day), and I'm hotly anticipating what they will do with the others!

Two of those ANOES films are rough to get through. Part 4 is ok, 5 is pretty bad & 6 is abysmal.

You weren't kidding. I was pleasantly surprised by how decent most of the Friday sequels were last year, but Nightmare 4-6 sure balanced that out. :funny: I've seen some defense of 6, with people enjoying how kooky it was, but I just couldn't get into it and it was my least favorite overall (though I barely remember anything about the remake.)

The one good thing to come out of it was that I rewatched Part 1 for the first time in at least ten years and it was actually alot better than I remembered! I had it at a 3.5 on letterbox but bumped it up to a 4.5. I still don't love the ending sequence, but the rest holds up so well.

I started People Under The Stairs, but it was late and I might have been out drinking before it. Fell asleep 30 minutes in, but what I saw didn't make me eager to finish it. Does it get better? Seemed both generic and kinda racist to me.

I watched New Nightmare again and yeah it's solid.

My rankings:

1 - obviously

3
7- both hold up well

2
Freddy v Jason - I liked both of these when younger but objectively not very good

5
4
Remake
6 - Nah on all of these

I'll always recommend Identity, 1408, The entire Tremors and Phanasm series to true horror fans, Prince of Darkness, Serpaint in the rainbow. The Frighteners, Misery, Cohen Brothers and early Sam Raimi, etc. And of course the early Universal Age of horror (1931-1948)

I think they always get overlooked by people trying to catch up. Not always about the mainstream.

So this year I'll watch the four Halloweens I haven't seen, five if you count Halloween Ends. I also have Exorcist 2 and 3 lined up. I've heard 2 stinks, but obviously gotta watch it if I'm gonna move on to 3 which I've heard is great.

Still hoping to see Barbarian eventually too. Hopefully it'll still be in theaters next week.

I'll definitely see Halloween Ends, and Barbarian, Smile, and Pearl if they're all available to stream this month. Other than those, a Danish film called Speak No Evil.

Okay, so I've seen all the ones I intended to see but substituted Smile for Terrifier 2 because Smile isn't available for me yet. I also saw Jeepers Creepers: Reborn and They Live.

I don't intend to watch any other horror movies this month unless Smile becomes available in the next three days, which I doubt it will be.
