If it's arbitrary, then it makes sense to put it in the thread that says "indie" in its title. Dredd is 100% an indie movie. $45m is NOTHING in these days of $200m budgets for mainstream studio movies. It's large for an indie, sure. But not "too large". It was backed by Lionsgate.
Ah yes, budget, another factor that needs to be checked for every potentially qualified movie.
By the way, what qualifies Cabin in the Woods for this thread over Dredd? I just looked up all the important FACTS: Also indie (Lionsgate), $30m budget (even less than Dredd), slightly more box office (66m vs 41m), more awards and acclaim than Dredd.

Re: Favorite film of 2012 - PART 1 (Mainstream)
This is a film targeted at mainstream audiences imo. It appeals to the people who like Terminator
But it wasn't going to make the poll anyways, so who fucking cares. Not every film fits cleanly on both lists, Django is both a mainstream hit and an awards film so I had to pick one
You can target a film at mainstream audiences, sure. But if those mainstream audiences don't bite, is the film still mainstream? Of course not. Don't be so stupid. It made nothing. Nobody cared. How anyone can say Dredd is part of the mainstream is ridiculous.
