Post Re: Favorite movie of 2011?
This one's a struggle. I think this was the weakest year for movies this decade. There were a number of movies I found to be pretty great, or at least enjoyable, but not a lot that I would consider excellent. Hmmm......

Best for me:

Bridesmaids, X-Men: First Class, Warrior, Source Code, The Skin I Live In

Also solid:

We Bought A Zoo, Crazy Stupid Love, Rango, Contagion, Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I appreciated some of the low-budget sci-fi from the year but wasn't blown away:

Take Shelter, Another Earth, Attack the Block

but which one is my favorite?? eh.....

notable: was not fond of many of the supposed "Best" of the year: Drive, Tree of Life, Hugo. Never saw The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, War Horse, Moneyball.....

I really need to watch Melancholia. I think I'd appreciate it.

The Descendants and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol are awesome. Just unlucky they came out in the same year as the Refn masterpiece, Drive.

Drive
Bridesmaids
Thor

I’ve always thought of this as down year. The list of films is really solid in retrospect though. A very nice balance of genres.

Midnight in Paris, but hard pickings with so many good-but-not-great releases. Source Code should be up there, was as big of a deal as Drive was at the time. Torn between that and The Artist and M:I-GP, and ^ Bridesmaids was a huge surprise. Hugo is a masterpiece I couldn't fully engage with, Tree of Life borders on high falutin greatness but Malick is apparently not as good with meta-cohesion as he is with visual poetry. I liked Take Shelter more than Drive, as far as indies go, but had Drive's soundtrack on repeat for months - pure cyberpunk melancholy it is. The Artist is so beautiful it made me cry at the time (I was fairly drunk), but dropped a bit on a second viewing. Film had some quality postmodernism about it though.

Midnight in Paris feels like a good compromise - not in the same league as Annie Hall, but everything is perfectly done, and had a similar entertainment feel as Sideways, which is an all time fav of mine.

"Other" again, since my highest rated ones are Melancholia and A torinói ló (The Turin Horse). From the poll options, it's The Tree of Life, followed by Drive. Others that are ahead of Drive: Le Havre and Le gamin au vélo (The Kid With a Bike). Also, this thread reminds me I should finally watch Midnight in Paris; it's one of the few Woody movies I've skipped for mysterious reasons.

Other - We Need To Talk About Kevin

I like Crazy, Stupid, Love as well, and I stand by Horrible Bosses being funnier than the wildly overrated Bridesmaids. I also think the first Captain America is the best MCU film.

Honestly, not a great year. But a really solid year. A lot of really good films, but nothing that really jumps out to me.

Bridesmaids was fucking HYSTERICAL and not overrated in the slightest. Can't believe we didn't get a sequel

Yeah lol half the cast was reunited and they did a sequel it probably wouldn't be as good. I'm kinda shocked that Kristen Wiig didn't blow up after and went the indie route. Melissa McCarthy is amazing and a true scene stealer but everyone was raving and saying Wiig would explode

What Chippy said is spot on. So many decent releases, no real stand outs. Difficult year to rank, only half a star separates these imo:

1. Midnight in Paris (4.5/5)
2. The Artist
3. Ghost Protocol
4. The Tree of Life
5. Source Code
6. Deathly Hollows 2
7. Bridesmaids
8. Take Shelter
9. Drive
10. Xmen: First Class
11. Hugo
12. The Descendants
13. We Need to Talk About Kevin
14. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
15. Thor
16. Moneyball (4/5)

That being said, how the hell did I miss Warrior? *Slaps self*

Warrior is easily my favourite of that year...even made a point to watch it annually up until 2016. Truly underrated flick, had the best acting of the year, with some of the best fighting you'll see anywhere. Not a masterpiece or anything, but struck a huge emotional chord, and fuck me is the ending powerful.

No idea everyone was so apathetic toward HPDH1+2. Not even Algren calling them shit. Are they forgettable or something?

Honestly, totally overlooked that one too. Using a shitty $69 android phone to post atm and it's hard to scan lists/edit posts without the browser freezing. The final Potter was excellent, no doubt about it. Would rank number 6 on the list above.

Ffs. Missed Fast Five as well. That's up there too, about on par with Thor for me. Shack wrote something similar in his overview on the main site actually.

I have always been ambivalent to the Harry Potter movies. The Columbus ones are the best honestly

It was a low key non-showy year but there were still some gems.

My faves:

Hugo
Drive
Senna
Shame
The Descendants
Thor
Limitless

One word titles ruled.

Fuck, I forgot so many. It was a great, great year. One of the best. Midnight in Paris, The Mechanic, The Descendants, Ghost Protocol, and Drive. Five of the best films of the last decade.

There were also tons of other smaller and/or great films, such as Trust, City of Life and Death, Machine Gun Preacher, The Trip, The Skin I Live In, Shame, The Guard, The Lincoln Lawyer, Insidious, Hall Pass, The Ides of March, and Hanna.

3. Warrior

Rest I've seen of the list ranked:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Moneyball
Horrible Bosses
Fast Five
X-Men: First Class
Bridesmaids
The Tree of Life
Captain America: The First Avenger
Thor
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
